Peter Berg, founder of Forward, a consulting firm that hires globally remote engineers for startups, wants to change that. About a month ago, Berg announced that Forward would provide data and context to every applicant once a role is closed. Berg told Business Insider that Forward does its best not to waste people's time during the application or interview process through lengthy exams or assignments. One woman posted on LinkedIn about the experience and said Forward offered her the "BEST" rejection letter. Melissa Bashur told BI that the insight she received allowed her to better understand the current job market.

America has a serious ugly home problem
  + stars: | 2024-07-02 | by ( James Rodriguez | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +14 min
Recently she posted a video on her YouTube channel in which she phrased the question more bluntly: "Why are homes so 'ugly' now?" Most people agree that America needs more houses, but nobody seems all that thrilled with the ones being built. Related storiesThe blame for America's architectural nightmare, however, doesn't stop at production builders, rising costs, or local codes. Homes look this way because they're not just places where we live — they're also supposed to help us get rich. As they stare down these rising costs, builders and architects have almost no choice but to streamline or opt for cheaper design elements.

Knowing how many H100 GPUs Musk is getting allows us to do some napkin math to figure out a rough estimate of the cost. Mark Zuckerberg said in January that Meta will have purchased about 350,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs by the end of 2024. Aravind Srinivas, founder and CEO of AI startup Perplexity, talked about getting turned down by a Meta AI researcher he was trying to poach in part because of Zuckerberg's huge collection of AI chips. Yet it's also given developers reason to be dubious: code produced by ChatGPT is often full of mistakes. 'Fewer hallucinated bugs'To begin, OpenAI is limiting CriticGPT's access to AI trainers. OpenAI has acknowledged that the more advanced its AI models become, the harder it can be for AI trainers "to spot inaccuracies when they do occur." AI models are also still susceptible to hallucinations that can be missed by AI trainers, OpenAI said. CriticGPT clearly has a long way to go, but shows that OpenAI is at least trying to tackle the problem.

He’s a Palestinian now.” The remark presumably meant to suggest that Schumer, who is Jewish, is somehow not supportive enough of Israel. Supporters hold up signs at former President Donald Trump's campaign rally in Virginia on June 28, 2024, one day after his historic debate against President Joe Biden. Some correctly noted that Trump revealed his view that Black Americans are relegated to working in low-paying, menial jobs that anyone could fill. Rep. James Clyburn, a Democrat from South Carolina, speaking Sunday on CNN’s State of the Union, noted that Trump’s “Black jobs” remark shows that Trump has “a low opinion of Black people.” But that’s nothing new, Clyburn added. The only question is whether enough Americans will reject Trump’s vileness to ensure that he never gets there again.

"Brat," along with viral hits like Sabrina Carpenter's "Espresso" and Tinashe's "Nasty," have ushered in a season of pleasure and levity — what my friends and I have been calling a "smooth brain summer." The primary lure of pop music has always been escapism. Indeed, we've lived in a pop world dominated by Taylor Swift and refashioned in her likeness for several years. These peculiar bops form the perfect foundation for a "smooth brain summer" soundtrack — though please note that doesn't mean they're devoid of value or meaning. An appetite (and a need) still exists for complex metaphors, history lessons, and personal revelations in pop music — but now is not the time.

Trump and Biden had their first face-off on Thursday evening, breaking with election norms by holding a debate months before voters head to the polls in November. CNN's fact-checker, Daniel Dale, estimated that Trump said false or misleading statements 30 times during the debate. Throughout the Thursday debate, Biden's voice sounded raspy as the president struggled at moments to hold in a cough. "That's a question we can't answer because we've never had a debate this early," Siegfried told BI.

Especially the last bit: Corporate America is obsessed with ensuring their employees are staying productive when they’re working remotely, away from the gimlet eyes of management. It’s easy to imagine the types of pretend productivity gadgets these employees might have used: “mouse jigglers,” gizmos with a questionable name that make random, small motions of a mouse or touchpad. And Wells Fargo’s crackdown on these gadgets is just the latest attempt by big business to rein in perceived slacking by remote employees. That perceptual gap reflects a vast and growing mutual distrust between workers and employers in America. In American politics, there is a difference between being old and seeming old — especially when appearing on TV. On TV, he looks ready to burst through your screen — which I find unsettling, but his fans really seem to enjoy. Then there’s Joe Biden, whose urgent challenge in the high-stakes presidential debate on Thursday is precisely this: how to be old on TV without seeming old — or worse, elderly. Mr. Biden is an effective president, but most people don’t watch how someone looks, sounds and moves on TV and think purely about his policy record. Coming across like an old friend, an old hand or even a grumpy old man can have plenty of upside, conveying warmth, experience, humor or a self-deprecating touch.
