"The food industry is undergoing a major revolution," Telsey Advisory Group analyst Sarang Vora wrote in a June 26 note. The rise, fall and future of plant-based meat Plant-based meat has been around for decades. The firm is forecasting a $450 billion market opportunity for cultivated meat by 2040, perhaps reaching 20% of the global meat market. Investing in cultivated meat For investors interested in getting in on the cultivated meat "revolution," it is still early stages, said Telsey's Vora. Archer-Daniels-Midland also recently announced it is collaborating with Believer Meats on new ways to develop and commercialize cultivated meat products.

Older orca mothers may protect their sons from bullying well into adulthood. Orca males carry fewer bite marks if their moms are alive in their old age, a study found. Moms may step in if their sons are in troubleTooth rake marks left behind on a Southern resident killer whale. David Ellifrit, Center for Whale ResearchThis new research, from the Universities of Exeter and York in the UK and the Center for Whale Research in Washington, suggests moms could be going even further for their sons. By protecting their sons, older females may be increasing the pod's chance of passing on its genes, while expending fewer resources.

[1/5] A killer whale member of the Bigg's orca T65B pod is seen in the Salish Sea near Eastsound, Washington, U.S., July 7, 2023. While the interactions may be frightening, they have also spawned a popular social media trend that humorously suggests killer whales are rising up to attack wealthy yacht owners. Dr. Michael Weiss, research director of the Center for Whale Research, has another theory for the orcas’ behavior – it’s a fad. "We've seen killer whales do fad-like behavior, and other cetaceans have fads. In 1987, Washington’s Southern Resident orcas suddenly began wearing dead salmon on their heads, like hats.

Some scientists say that even if the ocean were full of king salmon, the Southern Residents would still be in trouble. But the ocean won’t be full of king salmon. In the Pacific Northwest and California, wild salmon runs have been decimated by dams, agricultural pollution and hatchery programs that harmed stocks of wild fish. While the troller lawsuit makes its way through the appeals process, the Wild Fish Conservancy said it will encourage consumers to stop eating wild king salmon from Alaska’s troll fishery and petition to have many of that state’s king runs listed as endangered. Wild salmon survived for millenniums in rivers across the globe, through the earth’s warming and cooling cycles, but over the last few hundred years, they’ve disappeared from all but a few places on earth.

Six Ways to Find a Little Elbow Room in Dubrovnik

The Pile and Ploce Gates, the two entrances into Dubrovnik’s Old Town, once had drawbridges that lifted during the overnight hours, forcing visitors wanting to enter to wait outside its stone walls until morning. The bridges no longer lift, yet the bottlenecks of morning visitors remain. This compact, seaside city in Croatia has drawn millions of travelers from around the globe for years. Game the cruise ship scheduleDubrovnik is a mainstay on the itineraries of cruise ships navigating the Mediterranean, and 377,000 passengers disembarked last year, according to the city’s Port Authority. This year that number could jump to 500,000, as up to five ships are expected to arrive daily during the high season.

Bangkok CNN —Burger King is causing a stir in Thailand with its new offering: a burger with no meat and a jaw-dropping amount of cheese. This week, the Thai operator of the fast food chain introduced what it calls the “real cheeseburger,” a bun filled with as many as 20 slices of American cheese. This is for real,” Burger King said in a Sunday social media post. At one Burger King branch in Bangkok on Tuesday, a shift manager was overheard saying the outlet had to stop taking delivery orders so they could have enough stock left for walk-in diners. In Thailand, cheese is especially popular among young customers, and it is common for the dairy product to be sprinkled on all kinds of dishes.

In addition to total cholesterol, the study tracked triglycerides, a type of fat that comes from butter and oils; low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, also known as LDL or “bad” cholesterol; and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, known as HDL or ‘good’ cholesterol. In the Neurology study, variations in LDL and HDL cholesterol weren’t associated with higher risk for Alzheimer’s disease or related dementias. Lipids and neurodegenerative diseaseThe authors found a link, but not a causal relationship, between fluctuating levels of cholesterol and triglycerides and risk of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. Exactly how varying lipid levels and risk for Alzheimer’s or related dementias are related remains unclear, Bielinski said. “Always consult your doctor or healthcare provider if you are concerned about your cardiovascular health, cholesterol levels, or cognitive decline,” Weber said via email.

Masaki Sashima gazed through the fog one recent afternoon onto the gray waters of the Tokachi River in Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost island. From here, his Indigenous people, the Ainu, once used spears and nets to catch the salmon they regarded as gifts from the gods. Under Japanese law, river fishing for this salmon, an essential part of Ainu cuisine, trade and spiritual culture, has been off limits for more than a century. Mr. Sashima, 72, said it was time for his people to regain what they see as a natural right, and restore one of the last vestiges of a decimated Ainu identity. “In the past in our culture, the salmon were for everybody to enjoy within the community,” he said.

A Potato Salad That Packs a Serious Umami Punch

Mia here, filling in for Melissa Clark, who’s on vacation. Why smush potatoes into mayo when you could shingle them with cheese or roast them until crispy? What changed my mind was fish, specifically the realization that smoked salmon, tinned mackerel and — favorite of favorites — salmon roe were perfect partners to lush potato salad. So, of course, I immediately saved Kenji López-Alt’s Japanese potato salad with mentaiko (above) to my recipe box. It’s potato salad, but with umami oomph.

Why killer whales won’t stop ramming boats in Spain

The reason why certain whales are taking such a forward interest in boats is still unclear, but experts have a couple of theories. A pod of killer whales (Orcinus orca) swims together in the Strait of Gibraltar in August. The encounter usually ends once the killer whales break the rudder or the boat comes to a complete stop. “The official recommendation is not to do anything at all, turn off the engine or lower the sails and be as uninteresting to the killer whales as possible. “But this very vulnerable little population of killer whales depends on our love for them.

More and more people are adding fish into their diets for the heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids. But it may be time to skip the salmon and tuna, and reach for foods lower on the seafood chain like sardines and clams instead. "So, although they are underutilized, they're really good at delivering those sorts of nutrients." Bivalves, like mussels, are also a "really healthy choice," Golden notes, and they're great sources of zinc and calcium. Here's what Golden recommends adding to your diet to replace foods like red meat and farmed salmon.

NEW YORK, June 20 (Reuters) - Conservative U.S. Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito on Tuesday published a commentary in the Wall Street Journal defending himself from questions about his ethical conduct raised in a yet-to-be published article by news outlet ProPublica. Alito's comments come as the court has been embroiled in ethics controversies - in particular revelations about ties between conservative Justice Clarence Thomas and a Texas billionaire. Alito wrote that for the private flight to Alaska, which appears to have taken place in 2008, Singer "allowed me to occupy what would have otherwise been an unoccupied seat." Alito said the justices commonly interpreted financial disclosure requirements to mean that "accommodations and transportation for social events were not reportable gifts." Alito also said he had "no obligation" to recuse in any case connected to Singer, with whom he has spoken to a handful of times.

Biden’s Fishy Plan to Breach the Snake River Dams

Given the energy crisis in America—with two-thirds of the U.S. risking electricity outages this summer, including nearly everyone living west of the Mississippi, according to a recent warning from the North American Reliability Corp.—it’s a strange time to remove more than 3,000 megawatts of hourly capacity from the Western Interconnection electrical grid. Still, Mr. Biden announced on March 21 that he is determined to bring “healthy and abundant salmon runs back to the Colorado River system.” He meant the Columbia River, but that error was the least of the problems with his announcement.

WASHINGTON, June 13 (Reuters) - U.S. lawmakers warned on Tuesday that China could be preparing to forcibly repatriate refugees who fled North Korea and urged the United Nations to use its influence with Beijing to prevent this. He referred to reports that approximately 2,000 and "perhaps many more" North Korean refugees faced repatriation "which would subject them to severe human rights violations upon their return." The CECC co-chair, Democratic Senator Jeff Merkley, said a 2014 report by the U.N. commission on inquiry on human rights in North Korea had stated clearly that forcible repatriation of North Koreans "subjects them to crimes against humanity." "Just being a North Korean in China means an individual would be in grave peril if sent back to North Korea," he said. China's Washington embassy, UNHCR, and North Korea's U.N. mission did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

And yet, the Grand Canyon remains yoked to the present in one key respect. The Colorado River, whose wild energy incised the canyon over millions of years, is in crisis. Down beneath the tourist lodges and shops selling keychains and incense, past windswept arroyos and brown valleys speckled with agave, juniper and sagebrush, the rocks of the Grand Canyon seem untethered from time. The Grand Canyon is a planetary spectacle like none other — one that also happens to host a river that 40 million people rely on for water and power. At Mile 0 of the Grand Canyon, the river is running at around 7,000 cubic feet per second, rising toward 9,000 — not the lowest flows on record, but far from the highest.
