GOP House candidate JR Majewski has faced scrutiny for exaggerating his military service. That's despite Majewski's campaign slogan reading: "Conservative Veteran for Congress," with the word "veteran" highlighted in red. In an interview with Insider in Toledo, Majewski brushed off the ad cancellations. "I don't think that's something that's as big of an issue as it maybe appeared to be." "That guy right there just made one call, and made it happen for us," Majewski told attendees, pointing at the chairman.
Anyone on his team who agreed to a debate should be fired, or never work again, because that debate may have tanked his campaign,” said Chris Kofinis, a veteran Democratic campaign strategist. John Fetterman, the Democratic Senate nominee in Pennsylvania, debates Republican challenger Mehmet Oz on Tuesday. And Fetterman’s campaign, eager to project strength, said Wednesday that it had raised $2 million since the debate ended“There’s always second-guessing,” Sen. Bob Casey, D-Pa., said on MSNBC Wednesday. Fetterman’s debate performance took some Republicans by surprise, too. But another top Pennsylvania Democrat, who believes Fetterman’s debate performance was devastating and requested anonymity to offer candid thoughts on the party’s nominee, fears the race is over.
US Coast Guard icebreaker Healy made a rare trip to the North Pole at the end of September. Healy is one of only two icebreakers operated by the Coast Guard, and both of them are aging. Kenneth Boda, said in a release, calling it a "rare opportunity" and "a highlight of our Coast Guard careers." "This includes expanding the US Coast Guard icebreaker fleet to support persistent presence in the US Arctic and additional presence as needed in the European Arctic," the document adds. (The icebreaker Polar Sea, built alongside Polar Star, has been nonoperational since 2010 and is used for spare parts.)
Asia — especially Southeast Asia — remains a bright spot, even as the global economy looks set to head into recession next year, economists say. "Despite this, Asia remains a relative bright spot in an increasingly dimming global economy," the IMF said in its latest outlook report "Asia Sails Into Headwinds From Rate Hikes, War, and China Slowdown." The IMF predicted growth for Asia and the Pacific at 4% this year and 4.3% in 2023, with both below the 5.5% average over the last two decades. Still, they are higher than the fund's forecasts for Europe and the U.S. The IMF is expecting growth of 3.1% in 2022 and 0.5% in 2023 for the euro area; and 1.6% growth this year and 1% next year for the U.S.
A visitor takes pictures in front of a screen displaying an image of Chinese President Xi Jinping, at the Museum of the Communist Party of China in Beijing, China September 3, 2022. Restoring the practice, which entails self-criticism in front of the general secretary, marked a small but symbolic example of how Xi has departed from China's collective leadership of recent decades and accumulated power unseen since Mao's time. The expected absence of a clear successor will also enable Xi to rule unchallenged but potentially ratchets up risk the longer he stays in power. Many were purged, including rivals for power like the popular former Chongqing party chief Bo Xilai. Xi also oversaw a crushing of dissent and forbade "disrespectful" discussion about the party among members.
Oli Scarff | Getty Images News | Getty ImagesLONDON - U.K. lenders Virgin Money, Halifax and Skipton Building Society pulled some of their mortgage deals to customers after the tumult in British bond markets. Virgin Money and Skipton Building Society temporarily paused mortgage offers for new customers, while Halifax — owned by the Lloyds Banking Group — is planning to halt any mortgage products with fees where lower interest rates are usually offered. Skipton Building Society said they had paused their products in order to "reprice following the market response over recent days." Markets have begun pricing in a base rate rise to as high as 6% for next year, from 2.25% currently, raising concerns among mortgage lenders and borrowers. "Households refinancing a two-year fixed rate mortgage in the first half of next year will see monthly repayments jump to about £1,490 early next year, from £863 when they took on the mortgage two years prior."

This comes as the flow of trade continues to move away from the West Coast with logistics managers worried about a labor strike or lockout. More East Coast trade, and more port congestionThe CNBC Supply Chain Heat Map for the U.S. shows how the continued increase in trade has East Coast ports and Gulf port as the winners in this movement of freight. Maritime prices fallingThe flow of trade away from the West Coast has decreased the demand for vessel space, leading Far East to West Coast maritime freight prices to fall. "Shippers are still bringing in a lot of containers, on the East Coast and West Coast and Gulf Coast as well." Shippers are still hesitant to return re-routed cargo to the U.S. West coast, Sand said.
A Taiwan Coast Guard ship travels past the coast of China, in the waters off Nangan island of Matsu archipelago in Taiwan August 16, 2022. REUTERS/Ann WangTAIPEI, Sept 23 (Reuters) - A Chinese blockade of Taiwan or the seizure of an offshore island would be considered an act of war and Taiwan would not surrender, a senior Taiwanese security official told Reuters using unusually strong and direct language. Chinese military action might not be as straightforward as a full frontal assault on Taiwan: it could include actions like a blockade to try to force Taiwan to accept China's rule, strategists say. To show its anger, China mounted military exercises around Taiwan that included firing missiles and steps to mount a blockade. "A blockade is an act of war; seizing an offshore island is an act of war," the official said, adding Taipei believed Beijing was unlikely to take either of those actions at the moment.
London CNN Business —The Bank of England announced its seventh interest rate hike in less than a year on Thursday as it battles the highest level of inflation of any G7 economy. The central bank repeated last month’s hike of half a percentage point, taking rates to 2.25% from 1.75%. The US Federal Reserve on Wednesday announced an historic third consecutive three-quarter percentage point rise in interest rates, adding further wind to the dollar’s sails. The European Central Bank also broke new ground with its decision earlier this month to hike eurozone interest rates from 0% to 0.75%. The Swiss National Bank on Thursday hiked rates by three quarters of a percentage point, taking them out of negative territory to 0.5%.

But in Australia, despite Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's pro-republic views, there's no concerted push in that direction. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese attends the Proclamation of King Charles III, on the forecourt of Parliament House on September 11, 2022 in Canberra, Australia. Today, Yu says views within the Australia's Indigenous community on the Queen are mixed -- as they are in most communities. I resell shoes on Poshmark full time under the closet name "RNZY," which is my husband, Ryan's, and my name combined. From 2013 to 2015, I worked as a Bath & Body Works store manager in Burlington, Vermont. We sold shoes and clothing, but we quickly niched down to exclusively shoes. We both realized that we enjoyed the entire process of selling shoes — sourcing, cleaning, photographing, listing, and shipping. (We search for the pair of shoes on Poshmark and select "sold items."
When Harry Belafonte turned 93 on March 1, he celebrated with a tribute at the Apollo Theater in Harlem, which ended with a thunderous audience singalong to a riff on his star-making 1956 hit, “The Banana Boat Song,” complete with the rapper Doug E. Fresh beatboxing over its famous “Day-O!” refrain. It was a fitting salute at a building which Mr. Belafonte, in his 2011 memoir, called a “cathedral of spirituality.” But, just a few blocks uptown, he is receiving a quieter but no less momentous celebration. The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, a division of the New York Public Library, has acquired Mr. Belafonte’s personal archive — a vast maze of photographs, recordings, films, letters, artwork, clipping albums and other materials. It illuminates not just his career as an musician and actor, but as an activist and connector who seemed to know everyone, from Paul Robeson and Marlon Brando to Martin Luther King Jr., the Kennedys and Nelson Mandela.
