WASHINGTON (AP) — How it began: President Joe Biden was urgently seeking more money from Congress to aid Ukraine and Israel. On Dec. 12, the White House dispatched senior officials, including Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, to join the negotiations. It was never entirely clear what the White House strategy was to advance the border compromise in the House should it make it out of the Senate. With that, the deal that the White House and many in the Senate thought would pass was headed for failure. And Biden allies are intent on making Republicans take the hit for any further scenes of chaos at the border.

The Supreme Court should not take the bait. The Supreme Court heard oral arguments on that issue on Thursday.) The Supreme Court should decline the invitation and instead allow the trial to proceed. Remember I used to say: ‘Don’t do it, but if you do it, keep the oil.’”Facts First: Trump’s claim that he said “Don’t do it” is false; the claim was debunked eight years ago. In reality, Trump did not publicly express opposition to the March 2003 invasion of Iraq before it occurred. In his 2000 book, “The America We Deserve,” Trump argued a military strike on Iraq might be necessary; when radio host Howard Stern asked Trump in September 2002 whether he is “for invading Iraq,” Trump responded, “Yeah, I guess so. Trump claimed on Fox, as he has before, that Iran “called me” to let him know of its plan to deliberately miss. Trump has provided no substantiation for the claim that Iran called him to telegraph the strike and offer reassurance.

Biden was arriving in Las Vegas on Sunday for appearances through Monday. In Tuesday's primary, Biden faces only token opposition from author Marianne Williamson and a handful of relatively unknown challengers. He won Nevada in November 2020 by fewer than 3 percentage points. The Democratic National Committee last week announced a six-figure ad buy in Nevada and South Carolina, where Biden won the leadoff primary Saturday. As early voting began last weekend in Nevada, Trump asserted without evidence during a campaign rally in Las Vegas that he was the victim of the Biden administration's weaponizing law enforcement against him.

That’s because a state law requires Nevada to hold a primary election, but the Nevada GOP voted to hold their own caucuses, or party-run meetings open to Republicans only. Nevada voters have received mail ballots for the Feb. 6 primary that don’t list front-runner Donald Trump’s name. Three Nevada GOP leaders overseeing the caucuses have been indicted on felony charges that they were so-called fake electors who sent certificates to Congress falsely claiming Trump won Nevada in 2020. Still, Nevada GOP Chairman Michael McDonald has forged ahead with the caucuses. Trump himself told the crowd at the January rally to ignore the primary and attend the caucuses instead, saying “Your primary vote doesn’t mean anything.”A Nevada GOP rule states that any candidate who participates in the state-run primary may not run in the caucuses.

Ukraine has shared extraordinary footage of what it says is the sinking of a Russian ship. The claimed drone attack on Wednesday night sank the Ivanovets, Ukraine said. Ukraine has developed at least two naval attack drones, including the Cossack Mamai — capable of firing missiles — as well as the fast-moving Sea Baby. If confirmed, the loss of the ship would be a considerable boost for Ukraine, whose performance against Russia's Black Sea Fleet has been one of its most celebrated successes of the war.

The class-action litigation agreement includes payments of $1,500 for individual minors, according to Boston-based Veolia North America. Veolia North America had faced a trial this month in federal court, but that has been suspended pending final approval of its settlement agreement, the company said. The issues for a jury would have included whether Veolia North America breached care and, if so, whether that breach prolonged the crisis. Another trial is scheduled in October on behalf of seven other Flint children, according to their attorney, Corey Stern. The settlement announced Thursday by Veolia North America does not affect the October trial, Stern said.

Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas, the world's largest cruise ship, heads to the dock during its first arrival into PortMiami on Jan. 10, 2024. The world's largest cruise ship set sail from Miami, Florida over the weekend, embarking on a seven-day island-hopping trip through the tropics for its maiden commercial voyage. Onlookers gathered Saturday as Royal Caribbean International's behemoth — named the Icon of the Seas — left the Port of Miami to great fanfare. At a briefing earlier in the month, Royal Caribbean Group CEO Jason Liberty described the Icon of the Seas as the "biggest, baddest ship on the planet." The launch of the giant floating resort has sparked renewed concerns about the environmental impact of cruise tourism.

Lawmakers in more than a half-dozen U.S. states are pushing laws to define antisemitism, triggering debates about free speech and bringing complicated world politics into statehouses. Bill supporters say that more than 30 states have adopted the definition in some way over the years. Since the Israel-Hamas war erupted, several states have passed resolutions condemning Hamas and voicing support for Israel. Some protesters gathered in the capitol in Indiana this month before the House unanimously advanced a bill incorporating the definition there. How colleges are acting to prevent or stop antisemitism on campus has become a hot-button issue across the country.

Kerry and Xie paved the way for progress at international summits that could have otherwise stagnated. The annual U.N. climate summit was being held in Copenhagen later that year, and Kerry was eager to talk about it with Chinese officials. Stern said the deal “ricocheted around the climate world" and convinced countries that “we can actually get this done.”The importance of the deal became evident one month later. It was the relationship with China, Kerry said afterward, that helped “change the paradigm.”——-The warm feelings were short-lived.
