The water security of the millions of people who live in the foothills of the Andes is also at risk. To date, Aucca Chutas says the initiative has planted more than 10 million trees across the region, with the help of thousands of indigenous families. Constantino Aucca Chutas walks up a mountain with members of the local community to plant trees. In previous years, the community has planted as many as 100,000 trees in a single day, using a process of propagation, where root cuttings are planted. Aucca Chutas says that it is important to only plant local species as they have found that polylepis trees vary between regions and altitudes.

I've visited the Smoky Mountains with my husband every winter for the past 15 years. About 15 years ago, I moved to Nashville and was excited to learn that it was located just a short drive away from Tennessee's Smoky Mountains. Carly CaramannaWhen we visit the Smoky Mountains, we typically stay in Pigeon Forge or Gatlinburg, the two main tourist towns in the area. Breakfast is also a huge deal in the Smoky Mountains. Reuters —Major food companies, including Kraft Heinz, Mondelez and Coca-Cola, were hit with a new lawsuit in the US on Tuesday accusing them of designing and marketing “ultra-processed” foods to be addictive to children, causing chronic disease. His lawyers at the firm Morgan & Morgan, a major US plaintiffs’ firm, described the case as the first of its kind. The other companies being sued are Post Holdings, PepsiCo, General Mills, Nestle’s US arm, WK Kellogg, Mars, Kellanova and Conagra. Current U.S. Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Robert Califf has said that ultra-processed foods are likely addictive. Martinez’s lawsuit alleges that the food companies have long known their products are harmful and deliberately engineered them to be as addictive as possible.

At the end of the year, we start hearing about the Santa Claus rally and tax-loss harvesting. The so-called Santa Claus rally refers to a seasonal pattern that takes place in the final five trading days of the year and the first two of the new year. This time around, the Santa Claus window covers Dec. 24 and then Dec. 26-31, followed by Jan. 2-3. However, if we think about what happens before and after the Santa Claus rally, we can gain some understanding of why it might occur. Here we see another reason as to why tax harvesting may be better done toward the beginning of December — the wash rule.

The European Central Bank is heading for its final interest rate cut of the year on Thursday — and while the institution is expected to stick to a quarter rather than half-percentage-point trim, economists forecast that a faster pace of monetary loosening lies ahead. It will still be a crucial meeting to set guidance for the year ahead, not least because ECB staff will release their quarterly macroeconomic projections on growth and inflation. The bloc's central bank has so far lowered its key rate from 4% to 3.25% this year across three 25-basis-point increments between June and October. Money market pricing now suggests little chance of a jumbo trim. The euro zone economy meanwhile grew at its fastest pace in two years in the third quarter, albeit only at a rate of 0.4%.

There are some Christmas traditions in England that might confuse people from the US. Christmas pudding, a popular holiday dessert in the UK, is probably unfamiliar to most Americans. Washington CNN —One of President Joe Biden’s former top communications advisers ravaged the president’s messaging rollout strategy around his decision to pardon his son, Hunter Biden, lambasting the situation as “exceptionally poor timing” in a major public rebuke of her former boss. Dunn was a deeply loyal aide with a big-picture view of Biden’s strategy – with a hand in nearly all aspects of his political life. The president has said he made the decision over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend while with family in Nantucket. A new CNN/SSRS poll released on Wednesday shows that just one-third of Americans (32%) approve of the president’s decision to pardon his son, while 68% disapprove. The White House has defended Biden’s decision, with press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre arguing that President-elect Donald Trump would not slow down in pursuit of bringing charges against Hunter Biden in the future.

Russia hasn't mass-evacuated troops and gear out of its key bases in Syria. Russia said it's trying to work out a deal for its bases with the new Syrian government. The Russian military is still stationed at its Syrian bases after the fall of Bashar Assad's government, and analysts say an evacuation will be easy to spot. According to Russian state media, rebel forces now control the Latakia province, where these bases are located. On a monthly basis, prices rose by 0.3% after rising 0.2% for the prior four months. Economists were expecting inflation to pick up by 0.2% from October and record a 2.7% annual increase, primarily due to unfavorable comparisons from a year ago and stubborn housing-related inflation. However, in November, shelter-related costs weren’t the primary driver for the monthly increase: Shelter prices rose 0.3% for the month, accounting for nearly 40% of the overall gain. Instead, a big push came from food (up 0.4%) and energy prices, which rose 0.2% — the category’s first increase in six months. Core CPI rose 0.3% for the fourth consecutive month, holding firm at 3.3%, where it’s been since September.
