CNN —More than half a million people have been evacuated from their homes as Super Typhoon Man-yi made landfall along the eastern coast of Catanduanes, Philippines on Saturday. The FBI on Friday said reports of racist and offensive text messages sent from anonymous phone numbers are now being sent to members of Latino and LGBTQ communities. The FBI is investigating previous reports of dozens of racist texts sent to Black Americans telling them they have been “selected" to pick cotton "at the nearest plantation" immediately following last week's election. The initial reports of racist texts last week included recipients who attend universities from California to South Carolina, with some sent via TextNow, a service compatible with untraceable, “burner” phone numbers. The FBI on Friday said the texts from the initial reports were not identical but seemed to follow similar themes. The agency said it's also sharing information on the expanding texts and emails with education institutions and faith leaders.

A South Carolina man accused of making a series of racist death threats online to a New York reporter has been arrested. Austin Suman, 35, of Myrtle Beach, has been charged with willfully making a threat involving explosives and interstate stalking, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York said. Suman sent death threats Nov. 8 to the reporter via Facebook and email and used a racial slur and derogatory language, according to a criminal complaint unsealed Friday. Suman's anger stemmed from an article the reporter wrote about him in February 2019 about allegations of him threatening a roommate with a gun. Prosecutors said threats that neutralizing threats against the press are a priority.

A truck rammed the gates of parliament in the Russian-backed breakaway Georgian region of Abkhazia on Friday as hundreds protested against an investment agreement with Moscow that some Abkhaz fear will price them out of the property market. Two people were injured in the clashes, Russia’s RIA state news agency cited local emergency services as saying. Russian media showed a truck ramming into the gates surrounding the parliament in the capital, Sukhumi. Russia recognized Abkhazia and another breakaway region, South Ossetia, as independent states in 2008 after Russian troops repelled a Georgian attempt to retake South Ossetia in a five-day war. Other footage published by local Telegram channels showed protesters tying rope to the metal gates and attempting to tear them down.
