Harris responded that she’d cap child care costs at 7% of working families’ income, following the Biden administration playbook that she was heavily involved in writing. “My plan is that no family, no working family, should pay more than 7% of their household income in child care,” Harris said Tuesday at a National Association of Black Journalists event, noting that steep child care expenses make it difficult for many parents to work. Child care advocates were buoyed by Harris’ answer on Tuesday. Parents with two kids in a child care center paid on average at least twice as much for that care as they did for the typical rent in 11 states and the District of Columbia in 2023, according to a Child Care Aware of America report released in May. That equates to 10% of median household income for a married couple with children and 32% of median income for a single parent with children, Child Care Aware found.

While Black women and white women are diagnosed with breast cancer at similar rates, Black women are 40% more likely to die from the disease. For those with HR-positive, HER2-positive tumors, Black women were 34% more likely to die than white women. Black women were 17% more likely to die from triple-negative breast cancer than white women, a finding that surprised Warner. “If you look at breast cancer data from 40 years ago, there really weren’t differences in mortality for breast cancer between Black and white women.

Russian disinformation peddlers are producing videos targeting the Harris-Walz campaign with false and disparaging claims, Microsoft said Tuesday. At least three Russian disinformation actors have been working to denigrate the Harris-Walz campaign, Microsoft said. Some of the disinformation comes in the form of two videos that have been disseminated since late August, Microsoft said. NBC News has viewed an upload of that video posted to X, which Microsoft confirmed is the alleged Russian disinformation. The University of North Texas Health Science Center will stop accepting unclaimed bodies following an NBC News investigation that documented how the Fort Worth program cut up and leased out the remains of poor people for training and research without consent from the dead or their families. The move was prompted, she said, by documents uncovered while responding to reporters’ public-records requests about the center’s Willed Body Program. Among the revelations were “a lack of sufficient controls and oversight” of how outside companies handled and used corpses provided by the Health Science Center. Trent-Adams said leadership had been unaware that the body program was routinely shipping unclaimed remains — including those of U.S. military veterans — across state lines. The NBC News investigation published Monday found the center had received about 2,350 unclaimed bodies from Tarrant and Dallas counties in the past five years.

After DWAC merged with Trump Media, those Class B shares were supposed to automatically convert to Class A stock at a 1:1 ratio. Analysts have come to see indivual investments in Trump Media as a proxy for supporting the Republican presidential nominee and betting on his political fortunes. The FBI is warning election offices to be on the lookout after threatening letters containing suspicious substances were sent to the offices of multiple secretaries of state throughout the country. A senior law enforcement official confirms elections officials in at least six states received packages on Monday, but so far none of the packages have been found to contain any actual hazardous material. Secretaries of state, attorney general offices and state election offices in Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, Tennessee, Wyoming and Oklahoma were targeted. The FBI, United States Postal Inspection Service (USPIS), and state and local law enforcement partners are investigating multiple letters containing suspicious substances which have been mailed to Secretary of State's offices. The incident is also the second time in the past year that threats have hit multiple state election offices simultaneously.

☆ GLAAD finds overall decline in LGBTQ representation in major studio films

GLAAD, the LGBTQ media advocacy organization, has released its 12th annual Studio Responsibility Index tracking films released during 2023. Despite “a huge increase in LGBTQ characters who were front and center in their own narratives,” the study found the number of films with LGBTQ characters dropped in 2023. The survey looked at 256 films from 10 major distributors and their subsidiaries and streaming services. Those 70 films included 170 LGBTQ characters, of which 46% were characters of color, representing an increase of 6% from the 2022 study. If LGBTQ representation continues to decline in major releases, these companies will lose relevance with a crucial buying audience.

The Food and Drug Administration expanded the approval of Kisqali, a drug for metastatic breast cancer, to also treat patients with earlier stages of the disease, drugmaker Novartis said Tuesday. The approval means that tens of thousands of women diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer will have access to a medication that can help prevent their cancer from coming back. The expanded approval is for patients with HR-positive, HER2-negative breast cancer, the most common form of the disease.
