The rise comes amid anticipation that the Fed will deliver a half-point rate cut. Investors are anticipating the Federal Reserve's long-awaited rate cut tomorrow, which will be announced at the end of the central bank's two-day policy meeting. Regardless of the size of the cut, investors buying up bitcoin are anticipating the looser lending conditions will lead to more speculative behavior. We could be seeing a recovery of investors' appetite for risk-on assets like crypto, instigating more flows into Bitcoin spot ETFs," said Leena ElDeeb, a research analyst at 21Shares. Seasonal factors weakened the spot bitcoin ETF inflows this summer while deteriorating macro conditions drove investors toward safe, risk-off assets.

The Titan submersible plunged thousands of feet down the forbidding depths of the North Atlantic Ocean in search of the Titanic wreck site when it imploded, killing all five on board. OceanGate came under heavy scrutiny as a result of the disaster — an almost unheard-of occurrence in the submersible industry. But after the Titan didn’t return at its scheduled time, the Polar Prince contacted the Coast Guard. The suit remains ongoing, and a former OceanGate engineering director, Tony Nissen, named as a defendant, is expected to appear Monday at the Coast Guard hearing. “The Titan submersible did not just go down with its inventor — it went down with paying passengers.”

CNN —The US Coast Guard on Monday will begin a multi-day hearing to examine the loss of the Titan – the ill-fated submersible authorities said imploded in the North Atlantic Ocean in June 2023, killing all five people aboard during a dive to the wreckage of the Titanic. The public hearing will be conducted by the Marine Board of Investigation that was convened within days of the submersible’s disappearance. The MBI – the highest level of inquiry by the Coast Guard – was tasked with reviewing the cause of the tragedy and offering recommendations, including about potential civil penalties and criminal prosecution. The MBI is made up of numerous Coast Guard officials and at least two from the National Transportation Safety Board, according to a list provided by the Coast Guard. When the investigation is complete, the US Coast Guard and the National Transportation Safety Board will each conduct an independent analysis and complete reports, Neubauer said Sunday.

The hearing which will decide whether Manchester City broke 115* of the Premier League’s financial rules begins today (Monday) in London. This is The Athletic’s guide to the 115* alleged charges (yes, we will explain the asterisk). According to CME FedWatch, which estimates interest rate changes based on market predictions, the size of the rate cut is a coin toss. As of Friday afternoon, there's a 51% chance the Federal Reserve will cut rates by 25 basis points and a 49% chance it'll be an extra-large 50-basis-point cut. That's because a larger rate cut makes borrowing cheaper, which tends to drive up spending and fuel price increases. Rate cuts will also eventually make it cheaper for small businesses to take out loans. A rate cut could cause a rush of buyers to enter the market in the short term, driving up prices and competition.

CNN —The first image of the Titan submersible sitting at the bottom of the ocean following its catastrophic implosion last year was shared by the US Coast Guard on Monday as investigators opened a hearing into the tragedy. In the photo released Monday, the submersible’s broken tail cone is seen on the hazy blue floor of the North Atlantic Ocean. The tail cone was severed from the rest of the vessel, its edges ragged, while a ripped fragment of the vessel is seen nearby. The board on Monday called its first witnesses, including former employees of OceanGate, the firm that developed and operated the submersible. Seconds later, the Titan was “pinged” for the last time, and the mother ship lost track of the vessel.

My mom is a little old-fashioned and has been upset with me for letting my boyfriend significantly influence my financial decisions. She has said multiple times that a man should have no say in my finances until he's put a ring on my finger. One, your mom has hard-won life experiences to offer, and you would be wise to hear her out. Only that we shouldn't reject our parents' advice out of hand simply because they're "old-fashioned" or we think they're "projecting". Instead, it's about nobody having a say over anyone else's finances until they have a genuine stake in them.

The Fed is expected to cut rates multiple times this year and in 2025, which means mortgage rates should continue decreasing. Will mortgage rates drop when the Fed cuts rates? If he or other Fed officials indicate that bigger rate cuts could be coming, mortgage rates may inch down. How Fed rate cuts affect mortgage ratesChanges to the federal funds rate don't directly impact mortgages, but mortgage rates tend to trend up when the Fed raises rates and go down when it lowers rates. The Fed could lower rates substantially by the time we reach the 2025 buying season, which means mortgage rates may be a lot lower, too.

How oil-rich Arkansas became a hotbed of lithium mining
  + stars: | 2024-09-13 | by ( Lisa Setyon | In | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +3 min
The future of lithium production in the U.S. is gaining momentum in Arkansas, as companies like ExxonMobil , Albemarle, and Standard Lithium make significant investments in the state. While most of the world's lithium still comes from countries like Australia, Chile and China, Arkansas could change that. Standard Lithium, which has operated in Arkansas since 2020, is also expanding its Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) facility in El Dorado, thanks to a $100 million investment from Koch Strategic Platforms. Still, companies like Albemarle and Standard Lithium told CNBC they remain optimistic about Arkansas' potential to become a key player in the global lithium market. "The United States has to step up," said Robert Mintak, CEO of Standard Lithium.

CNN —A nearly four-year-old legal effort by Black voters to convince a court to prevent former President Donald Trump and the Republican Party from potentially intimidating voters and poll workers is quietly coming back to life as the 2024 election approaches. First brought in the days following the 2020 election, the lawsuit has moved slowly through the federal courts in Washington, DC, as Trump’s claims of presidential immunity from civil lawsuits were being litigated. It coincidently has landed before US District Judge Tanya Chutkan, the judge handling the federal election subversion charges against Trump. Attorneys for Trump and the RNC have asked to dismiss the case, saying any conduct at issue constitutes protected political speech. A federal judge found the two men liable for targeting Black voters in 2023, saying that their actions ran afoul of the KKK Act, the VRA and other laws.

Geologic hydrogen — sometimes known as white, gold or natural hydrogen — refers to hydrogen gas that is found in its natural form beneath Earth's surface. Pete Johnson, CEO and co-founder of Koloma, told CNBC that geologic hydrogen is fundamentally an exploration and production business. A primary energy source, such as coal, oil, wind or solar, refers to a natural energy source that has not been altered or converted. It's within this context that momentum has been growing over the potential of geologic hydrogen. Ellis said that just a small percentage of geologic hydrogen recovery might well be enough to supply all the projected demand for 200 years.

As Hurricane Francine pushed northeast through the Gulf of Mexico, preparations were underway in Mississippi, a state with only a short coastline — but one that has been repeatedly battered by hurricanes in the past. Tate Reeves declared a state of emergency. They poured the sand into white bags, tied them up and loaded them onto pickup trucks for residents to take home. They rode out Hurricane Katrina there in 2005, but said they wouldn’t stay if another storm of that strength threatened the area.
