Trump is already flexing strongman power in the GOP

The ex-president is trying to intimidate Nikki Haley into abandoning the GOP presidential race. Trump’s brisk assertion of his growing power as the likely nominee is a characteristic dismantling of constraints that echoes his behavior in office. But she provoked him by refusing to quickly fold her campaign and endorse him like other GOP candidates, including Florida Gov. But the disdain toward Haley from Trump world is remarkable. It would have essentially joined the party’s forces with Trump while an election involving a rival was still taking place.

Republican presidential hopeful and former US President Donald Trump gestures as he speaks during a rally in Laconia, New Hampshire, January 22, 2024. A draft resolution making its way through the Republican National Committee would declare Donald Trump the GOP's presumptive 2024 presidential nominee — even as his rival, former U.N. ambassador Nikki Haley, is still vying for the nomination. The two-page draft notes that Trump easily won the Iowa caucuses and Tuesday's New Hampshire primary, and that he leads in the polls of upcoming primary states, including Haley's home state of South Carolina. It argues, "any money spent from this moment forward in the primary process is better spent fighting the democrats by focusing on President Biden's deadly border crisis, failed economic policies and disastrous and dangerous foreign policy." The document could come up next week at the committee's winter meeting in Las Vegas, Nevada, according to NBC News, which obtained a copy of the draft resolution from an RNC member.

Haley’s campaign leaned into those attacks Thursday, releasing T-shirts emblazoned with the words“Barred. “We need to unite around our eventual nominee, which is Donald Trump,” Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel said Tuesday on Fox News. In the final days before the GOP primary there, Trump paraded a series of South Carolina Republican officials onstage at his rallies, including Gov. Worst of all, no one returned my calls.”Fundraising dried up, and Haley’s campaign directed most of its funds to TV. “Any other person probably would have just quit and caved in there, but she knew that South Carolina needed her,” Ballentine said.

Read previewIn December 2023, while there were still around six remaining GOP presidential hopefuls vying for the party's nomination, the chair of the Republican National Committee insisted the party wasn't picking favorites. Appearing on Fox News on Tuesday after former President Donald Trump won the New Hampshire state primary, she said that after "looking at the math and the path going forward," she didn't think Haley could win. Advertisement"Chairwoman McDaniel was stating the fact that the primary election currently favors President Trump," RNC Spokesperson Anna Kelly told Business Insider. Before the New Hampshire primary even finished, the chairs of the National Republican Congressional Committee and National Congressional Senate Committee each released statements backing Trump, calling him the "presumptive nominee." CNN —A draft resolution circulating among the Republican National Committee would formally declare Donald Trump the Republican Party’s 2024 presumptive nominee. It would also mean the committee would be supporting Trump and effectively opposing former South Carolina Gov. Those victories have led many prominent figures in the Republican Party to coalesce around Trump and call on Haley to exit the race. Earlier this week, McDaniel told Fox News, “We need to unite around our eventual nominee, which is Donald Trump.”Current RNC rules require Trump to secure 1,215 delegates to officially become the party’s nominee. Some RNC members were discussing the resolution during a conference call Wednesday night, according to a Republican with knowledge of that call.

But Iowa caucusgoers and New Hampshire primary voters also exposed noticeable chinks in Trump’s electoral armor and worrying general election headwinds that he and his campaign will face in the coming months. Yes, Trump handily won a head-to-head matchup in a New Hampshire primary contest that wasn’t limited to just Republicans. “Twenty percent of GOP voters will not vote for him,” the Republican member told CNN. Visibly miffed by Haley’s conviction to continue on after New Hampshire, Trump spent the evening lashing out at her online and trashing her appearance in his victory speech. Of the 30% of New Hampshire GOP primary voters who named immigration as their top concern, nearly 8 in 10 voted for Trump, according to CNN’s exit poll.

And there is precedent for the committee declaring a candidate the presumptive nominee before winning the 1,215 requisite delegates to clinch the nomination. In May 2016, then-RNC Chairman Reince Priebus declared Trump the presumptive nominee before he had the appropriate share of delegates wrapped up. Despite losing both the Iowa and New Hampshire contests to Trump, Haley has argued that her performance — outlasting all the other Trump rivals — shows the strength of her candidacy. Neither the Haley campaign nor the Trump campaign returned messages seeking comment on Thursday. “I’ve heard a lot of elected officials in the Republican Party, including the RNC chair, say, ‘We need to rally around a candidate.’ That this is going to be our candidate.

“I think it’s going to be a problem,” said Oscar Brock, a member of the Republican National Committee from Tennessee. And the state parties rely on the RNC and we ship them the data. Kemp has used his, the Georgians First Leadership Committee, as a political fundraising vehicle operating outside of the usual channels of the state Republican party. (Photo by Joe Raedle/Getty Images)This week's GOP presidential primary debate will have the smallest stage yet, with just four candidates facing off Wednesday night, the Republican National Committee announced Monday. "The fourth debate is another fantastic opportunity for our Republican candidates to share our winning agenda with the American people," RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel said in a statement announcing Wednesday's participants.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — The field of candidates onstage for the fourth Republican presidential debate will be the smallest yet. To qualify for the fourth debate, candidates needed at least 6% support in two national polls or 6% in one national poll as well as two polls from four of the early-voting states — Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina. During the last debate, Haley called the entrepreneur “scum” after he invoked Haley’s daughter during a critique of TikTok. Without Trump at the debates, Christie has been left without his intended target but has brought him up nonetheless. Instead of going to Alabama — or holding his own counterprogramming event, as he has done for past debates — Trump is holding a closed-door campaign fundraiser in Florida.

CNN —Four candidates have qualified for the fourth GOP presidential primary debate taking place Wednesday night in Alabama, the Republican National Committee and debate broadcaster NewsNation announced Monday. Chris Christie will face off in Tuscaloosa in what will be the smallest debate stage lineup so far this year. To make the Tuscaloosa stage, candidates had to meet higher donor and polling criteria set by the Republican National Committee. None of their debate criteria relate to the qualifications related to actually doing the job of the president. Asa Hutchinson remains in the GOP race, though he has not qualified for any primary debates since his appearance at the first face-off in Milwaukee in August.

Doug Burgum, governor of North Dakota and 2024 Republican presidential candidate, speaks with members of the media in the spin room following the Republican primary presidential debate hosted by Fox News in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, US, on Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2023. Doug Burgum ended his campaign for the Republican presidential nomination on Monday despite a stronger-than-expected showing fueled by a gift card-for-campaign donation gimmick that helped get him on the debate stage. The tactic drew skepticism over its legality, though Burgum's campaign said its legal advisers had reviewed and approved the method. And it appeared that he would also not qualify for the fourth debate, which is being held Wednesday in Alabama. Burgum was a political newcomer in 2016 when he staged an upset over the longtime attorney general in North Dakota's Republican gubernatorial primary.

Even if he were to be convicted in Washington or another trial, top party leaders and many voters have indicated they would stand by Trump anyway. And Trump and his allies are pushing to dismiss and delay the trials and have worked with state parties to craft rules favorable to him. The RNC rules don’t include any provisions specific to the unprecedented scenario unfolding. And, yes, if they choose Donald Trump -- the voters are looking at this, and they think there is a two-tiered system of justice. And unlike in 2016, when a large faction within the party resisted Trump's candidacy, the Republican Party has transformed under Trump.

In recent months, the campaign has spun up the internal task force, dubbed the “Social Media, AI, Mis/Disinformation (SAID) Legal Advisory Group,” part of a broader effort across the campaign to counter all forms of disinformation, TJ Ducklo, a senior adviser to the Biden campaign, told CNN. It aims to have enough prepared to be able to run a campaign-wide tabletop exercise in the first half of 2024. Existing US election law prohibits campaigns from “fraudulently misrepresenting other candidates or political parties,” but whether this prohibition extends to AI-generated content is an open question. Any political advertiser that uses deepfakes in ads on Facebook or Instagram will need to disclose that fact, it said. The Meta report details how some social media platforms are grappling with how to handle deceptive uses of AI.

Pledged and bound delegates can be further divided into at-large delegates and district delegates. At-large delegates represent the entire state, while district delegates represent specific districts within the state, usually congressional districts but sometimes state legislative districts. How does a candidate ‘win’ delegates? Others allocate just their statewide delegates according to the statewide vote and their district delegates according to the vote in each district. Congressional district delegates would be awarded the same way, based on results in each individual district.

Three presidential debates are set for next year in Texas, Virginia and Utah. And one vice presidential debate is scheduled for Sept. 25 at Lafayette College in Pennsylvania. The rift between the RNC and the commission has been on display in recent years. And in 2020, former President Donald Trump refused to participate in the second presidential debate because it was set to be held virtually during the COVID-19 pandemic. But Trump has expressed interest in debating President Joe Biden, the presumptive Democratic nominee, who has yet to commit to attending next year’s debates.

WASHINGTON — The Commission on Presidential Debates announced Monday the dates and locations of three presidential debates for the 2024 general election. The lone vice presidential debate will take place at Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania, on Sept. 25. The Biden campaign declined to comment on the announcement. He has bashed the Commission on Presidential Debates, claiming it is "very biased" and "stacked with Trump Haters & Never Trumpers." Last year, the Republican National Committee voted to require that GOP presidential candidates not participate in debates organized by the commission.
