Having coronary heart disease raises the risk of future dementia by 27% compared with people without heart disease, the AHA statement said. Heart attacks and heart failureAbout every 40 seconds, someone in the United States will have a heart attack, the AHA estimates. Heart failure is a more severe form of heart disease, in which the heart is too weak to pump enough blood and oxygen to the body’s organs. That benefit held true even for people with existing diagnoses of cardiometabolic conditions such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke.

Taipei, Taiwan Reuters —Four employees of Taiwan’s Foxconn, the world’s largest iPhone assembler, have been detained in China under “quite strange” circumstances, Taiwan’s government said. The council said Foxconn had stated the company had “suffered no losses and that the four employees had done nothing to harm the company’s interests.”“This has seriously damaged the confidence of companies. Calls to China’s Taiwan Affairs Office seeking comment outside of office hours went unanswered. In June, Taiwan’s government raised its travel warning for China, telling its citizens not to go unless absolutely necessary, following a threat from Beijing to execute those deemed “diehard” Taiwan independence supporters. China claims democratically governed Taiwan as its own territory, over the strong objections of the government in Taipei.

Milton's maximum sustained winds are 125 mph, which puts it at Category 3, according to the National Hurricane Center. But Calloway, who has 671,000 followers on Instagram, remains largely unfazed by the widespread concern as Milton barrels toward Florida’s west coast. Calloway said she’s confident her building can sustain the hurricane.

A limited supply of IV fluid, stemming from damage caused by Hurricane Helene, is forcing some hospitals across the U.S. to postpone elective surgery and other nonemergency procedures to safeguard their stock. He also said the medical center has “doubled down” on efforts to prevent wasting IV fluid, as it’s the area’s only level 1 trauma hospital. A number of IV products, including sodium chloride, dextrose and sterile water, have already been in short supply. The Baxter facility shutdown hasn’t led to any new IV fluid shortages yet, the Food and Drug Administration said Tuesday. On Tuesday, the agency also helped safely move IV products from B. Braun Medical’s Daytona Beach facilities out of the path of Hurricane Milton, Dembner said.

Propagandists seeking to influence elections around the globe have tried to use ChatGPT in their operations, according to a report released Wednesday by the technology’s creator, OpenAI. OpenAI said in its report that this year it has stopped people who tried to use ChatGPT to generate content about elections in the U.S., Rwanda, India, and the European Union. They also used ChatGPT to create social media posts in support of those sites, according to the report. They were part of a larger campaign that repeatedly spammed pro-party posts on X, a documented propaganda campaign that posted messages — often the same few messages — more than 650,000 times. According to OpenAI’s report, they also tried to get ChatGPT to tell them the default login credentials for other companies that provide industrial control systems software.

Sweden's Northvolt on Wednesday said the head of its main plant, Europe's first homegrown gigafactory for lithium-ion battery cells, will step down with immediate effect. The position will be held until the end of the year as the company seeks to secure a permanent replacement for CEO of Northvolt Ett, it added. Based in Stockholm, Sweden, Northvolt is one of Europe's most valuable privately held tech firms that builds lithium-ion batteries for the electric vehicle industry. The strategic action required the company to cut a total of 1,600 jobs in Sweden, Northvolt said.

As Hurricane Milton barrels toward Tampa Bay, some residents are saying that the resources needed to evacuate — especially gasoline — are in short supply, despite a mandate to leave the area. Debris from Helene also poses a risk as Milton approaches because the objects can turn into dangerous projectiles. On social media, lines stretching around the block could be seen at the few gas stations in the greater Tampa Bay area that still had fuel. Hurricane Helene had already damaged her family home and she assumes more, if not total damage, will be wrought by Milton. “What’s really sad is seeing people pulling up to gas stations and just staring at pumps that are out of gas,” she said.

American Water , the largest water utility in the U.S., disclosed that it had been hit by a cyberattack. Hacks targeting U.S. water infrastructure, in particular, have been increasing, with some of the attacks linked to geopolitical rivals of the U.S., including Iran, Russia and China. "All drinking water and wastewater systems are at risk — large and small, urban and rural," an EPA spokesman recently told CNBC. American Water provides drinking water and wastewater services to more than 14 million people with regulated operations in 14 states and on 18 military installations. It said turning off customer systems was intended to protect data, though it added that it is too soon to know whether any customer information is at risk.

CNN —A third farmworker has tested positive for bird flu in California, according to the state’s health department. Like the first two human cases in California, this third case is a farmworker who was in contact with sick dairy cattle. The CDC’s Principal Deputy Director, Dr. Nirav Shah, said in a news briefing on Friday that these cases were not a surprise. The California Department of Food and Agriculture has been conducting bulk milk tank sampling in areas where herds test positive. The first infected herds in California were found in late August.

Panera Bread has settled with the family of an Ivy League student with a heart condition who died after drinking the chain’s highly caffeinated Charged Lemonade drink. The suit said that Katz bought a Charged Lemonade from a Panera restaurant in September 2022. A second lawsuit blamed it for a Florida man’s death while the other two alleged that the Charged Lemonade caused permanent heart injuries in previously healthy people. The complaint said the Charged Lemonade also had guarana extract, another stimulant, as well as the equivalent of nearly 30 teaspoons of sugar in the large size. It also added prominent signs cautioning that Charged Lemonade contained caffeine, should be consumed in moderation and was not recommended for children, people sensitive to caffeine, pregnant or nursing women.
