Here’s the deal: The grand total of all the private wealth in the world fell 2.4% to $454.4 trillion, according to the annual Credit Suisse and UBS global wealth report. Meanwhile, global median wealth, a more meaningful indicator of how the typical person is faring, actually rose 3% in 2022. The top 1% of households still hold a staggering 44.5% of all global wealth. “The global economy is experiencing a period of astonishing economic alteration,” wrote Paul Donovan Chief Economist at UBS Global Wealth Management, in the report. Another silver lining: According to Credit Suisse projections, global wealth will rise 38% over the next five years, reaching $629 trillion by 2027.

Sean Paul Is Still Busy

Long before he became the bandannaed and cornrowed Sean Paul who entranced the American public, Sean Paul Ryan Francis Henriques was just another young offshoot of Jamaica’s famous Henriques clan, one of the oldest Jewish families on the island, who immigrated there from Portugal in the 17th century. Kingston is a city that takes parties seriously, and the sound system was a key 20th-century innovation — a portable setup of amplifiers, turntables and mountains of speakers, all orchestrated by a D.J. Paul and his younger brother, Jason, were both enamored of this family business; Jason actually recalls falling asleep in a bass box as a child. When Paul was 13, his father was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to 15 years in prison. This devastated Paul — not because his father had been much of a presence in his life but because what little he had of him would now be gone.

Trailing behind “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” by an estimated $48 million, writer-director Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” appears destined to gain the top spot for highest grossing domestic film of 2023. While “Pink Fever” has slowed in the last week, “Barbie” is estimated to have earned $33.7 million this weekend to maintain its stronghold in the theaters. The comedy about the iconic doll is estimated to have reached $525 million domestic and nearly $1.2 billion worldwide. “Barbie” took in $10 million Friday alone, earning an average above $11.3 million per day from August 5-11. “Barbie” passed the $500 million domestic mark in the middle of its third week, while “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” needed more than five weeks to reach the milestone.

In the first seven months of the year, exports to the United States declined 18.6 percent compared with the same period last year, while shipments to the European Union fell 5 percent. Exports to Russia, which has been hit with Western sanctions over its invasion of Ukraine, increased more than 70 percent. “There has been general weakness in demand for China’s exports,” he said. A real estate crisis and weak spending by consumers have put pressure on Beijing to increase exports to help stabilize the economy. But the trade numbers released on Tuesday suggest weak demand may exacerbate a global slowdown.

Discovery and Mattel will top $1 billion in global ticket sales, before the end of the weekend, according to estimates from the studio. Gerwig joins Anna Boden, co-director of Disney's "Captain Marvel," as the only two women to helm a live-action billion-dollar film. Universal's "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" has topped $1.3 billion since its April debut. Each film tallied less than $200 million in domestic box office receipts. "The box office powerhouse isn't done yet as the coming weeks offer little in the way of direct competition, giving 'Barbie' plenty of runway to continue building on this success," Robbins said.

Conservative organizations have released a proposed "battle plan" for the next Republican president. The plan calls for the president to end the Inflation Reduction Act, which has primarily benefited red states. The 2022 bill funnels hundreds of billions to states home to major clean energy projects, like Oklahoma and Texas. Paul Dans, a director with the Heritage Foundation, called Project 2025 a "battle plan" for the next Republican president, The New York Times reported. During a summer of scorching heat that has broken records and forced Americans to confront the reality of climate change, conservatives are laying the groundwork for a 2024 Republican administration that would dismantle efforts to slow global warming. The move is part of a sweeping strategy dubbed Project 2025 that Paul Dans of the Heritage Foundation, the conservative think tank organizing the effort, has called a “battle plan” for the first 180 days of a future Republican presidency. The climate and energy provisions would be among the most severe swings away from current federal policies. The plan calls for shredding regulations to curb greenhouse gas pollution from cars, oil and gas wells and power plants, dismantling almost every clean energy program in the federal government and boosting the production of fossil fuels — the burning of which is the chief cause of planetary warming.

"Barbie" is less than $100 million away from topping $1 billion at the global box office. "Joining the billion-dollar box office club is a watershed moment for 'Barbie' and Greta Gerwig as the latter will become the first solo female director to achieve that feat," said Shawn Robbins, chief analyst at BoxOffice.com. Anna Boden, co-director of Disney's "Captain Marvel," was the first female director to be attached to a billion-dollar live-action film. When "Barbie" tops this mark, it will become the first billion-dollar film to do so for the newly minted Warner Bros. Box office analysts don't expect "Barbie" ticket sales to stall after this weekend, either.

"Barbenheimer" remains red-hot at the box office. Domestically, "Barbenheimer" saw smaller-than-average second week ticket sales drops as millions of moviegoers headed to cinemas to catch the popular flicks. Second week numbers are often looked at by box office analysts as an indicator of whether a film will have longevity at the box office or will fizzle quickly. Similarly, the confluence of these two films boosted the overall domestic box office compared with last year's haul to this point. The overall domestic box office still lags behind prepandemic levels by around 16%, however.

Here's which entertainment companies will outperform, according to analysts and industry insiders. Four industry veterans Insider spoke with unanimously agreed that unless the strikes are resolved soon, the movie industry's much-needed revival will fizzle out. In a mid-July note about the movie industry, Reese and Pachter highlighted three theater-related companies that are best positioned to survive in this difficult environment. FuboTV should be a winner since it's a solid alternative for cord cutters who still need news and sports coverage, which aren't impacted by the strikes, Pachter noted. Netflix is perhaps the most fascinating company in the media industry right now.

The Federal Reserve has made three big mistakes since inflation took off in 2021, according to UBS. "Today's rate hike will probably have to be reversed in a relatively short space of time," UBS said. Today's additional rate hike from the Fed gets to the root of what has went wrong. These are the three big mistakes made by the Fed over the past two years, and how it will impact the economy, according to UBS. Because of the "Barbenheimer" effect, many moviegoers who had only planned to see one of the two films ended up watching both. When forecasting for the two movies first started, experts predicted that "Barbie" would have an opening weekend in the $50 million to $60 million range, while "Oppenheimer" looked poised to sell between $30 million and $40 million worth of tickets.
