It was meant to be another night of violence at the hands of the far right. “It shows that when everyone comes out to support, their numbers dwindle.”Large crowds gathered at an anti-racism protest in Walthamstow on Wednesday, where far-right violence had been expected. The fury simmering in a subset of White Britain remains a live danger; these riots were shocking, but not entirely surprising. “I normally walk through this city center all the time,” Nadeem Akhtar, 18, told CNN in the northern English city of Sheffield, where angry riots took place. Tommy Robinson, the figurehead of Britain’s far right, was reinstated to X (then Twitter) days after Elon Musk bought the platform.

It’s called a sector rotation, and it happens all the time as part of the natural course of a business cycle. The US economy is still pretty strong, growing at an annualized rate close to 3% in the most recent quarter. But it’s not as if Americans have stopped going to restaurants — they’re just being a bit more discerning when they do. Instead, they’re going to Texas Roadhouse, where they can sit down and have some service with their meal. Or they’re swinging through Chipotle, which saw sales shoot up 11% last quarter at stores open at least a year.

The Big Number: $8.4 Billion
  + stars: | 2024-08-09 | by ( Santul Nerkar | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Disney reported revenue of $8.4 billion for its theme park unit for the three months that ended in June. While that was a 2 percent increase from the previous year, it was lower than expected, in a sign that stubborn inflation and high interest rates were weighing on Americans’ ability to sail on Disney cruise ships and visit parks like Disney World. Disney, in its earnings report on Wednesday, blamed a “moderation of consumer demand.”Robert Iger, Disney’s chief executive, has called its theme parks “a key growth engine.” And for the past decade, the company has relied on the parks to help offset losses in other divisions, as it has spent billions on its streaming services while revenue in its cable television business has declined. Disney’s streaming service turned a profit in the quarter for the first time, but since April 1, the company’s stock has fallen around 29 percent. “The lower-income consumer is feeling a bit of stress, and the higher-income consumer is traveling internationally a bit more,” Hugh F. Johnston, Disney’s chief financial officer, said Wednesday on a conference call with analysts.

CNN —Refugee athlete Manizha Talash was disqualified from the B-Girl breaking competition at the Olympics for wearing a cape with the words “Free Afghan Women” during her breaking battle on Friday. The 21-year-old, who fled Afghanistan after the Taliban began seizing control in 2021, now lives in Spain and represents the Refugee Team at the games as B-girl Talash. As she made her debut during the pre-qualifier battle, Talash revealed a baby blue cape under her jumper emblazoned with the words calling for Afghan women’s emancipation. Results have been updated accordingly.”“I didn’t leave Afghanistan because I’m afraid of the Taliban or because I can’t live in Afghanistan,” Talash said before action got underway. The breaker became one of 37 athletes representing the Refugee Olympic Team in Paris, and is proud to do so.

After years of starts and stops at the box office, Disney appears to have hit a groove in 2024. Its latest Pixar film, “Inside Out 2,” is now the highest-grossing animated film of all time, topping $1.5 billion at the global box office. And the box office hits aren’t expected to stop there. Disney has long been a box office champion, driving significant ticket sales domestically and globally. In the year before the pandemic, Disney had seven theatrical releases top $1 billion at the box office.

Disney may have a parks problem

New York CNN —Disney Parks are the latest business to face slowing consumer demand in the face of higher prices. Disney’s parks business underperformed expectations and profit fell somewhat last quarter. It’s not just Disney that’s seeing a pullback — Bank of America Institute reported credit card transactions on travel ticked down in June. Disney’s domestic parks and international parks and cruises, though, are seeing different results: Disney’s international parks had increases in attendance and more rooms booked. The company noted that attendance at the parks was comparable to this time last year and spending per guest was up.

Disney's combined streaming business, which consists of Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+, turned a profit for the first time — and it happened a quarter earlier than the company had expected. Executives on Wednesday's earnings call touted the progress of Disney's streaming business toward profitability, a goal for all media companies as they look to chase customers switching to streaming. The combined streaming business posted an operating profit of $47 million compared with a loss of $512 million in the same quarter last year. Meanwhile, in May, Disney highlighted a slightly different metric, noting that Disney+ and Hulu together turned a profit, but when combined with ESPN+, the streaming businesses suffered a loss. "I feel very bullish about the future of this business," Iger said during the call.

Shares of Disney fell Wednesday as concerns about attendance at its theme parks overshadowed streaming profits and better-than-expected headline results. The combined streaming business — encompassing Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+ — turned in its first-ever quarterly profit slightly ahead of schedule. Then, about two weeks ago, CNBC parent Comcast issued weak April-to-June results for its Universal theme parks business, which weighed on Disney's stock in that session . And, at this point, getting to profitability in the combined streaming business, which adds ESPN+ into the mix, was the biggest focus. "So, I do believe the parks business is in fundamentally good shape.

Here's a surprise: Disney 's media business isn't weighing down the company anymore. Disney's combined streaming businesses — Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+ — turned a quarterly profit for the first time ever, making $47 million. Meanwhile, Disney saw a "moderation of consumer demand towards the end of [fiscal] Q3 that exceeded our previous expectations" for its theme parks division. The company said last year it plans to invest $60 billion in its theme parks and cruise lines in the next decade. Disney shares dropped Wednesday, likely because investors were focused on the parks.

They are part of Louisville’s burgeoning tenants union, which mobilizes the residents of low-income apartment complexes, rural trailer parks and gentrifying neighborhoods to challenge the corporate landlords that they say have devastated affordable housing. Midsize cities like Louisville contain many of the fault lines that created America’s housing crisis: gentrification, federal development schemes and redlining. If this country’s affordable housing crisis can be solved here, it could establish a template for helping the nation’s poor and marginalized find stability. Josh Poe, 47, and Jessica Bellamy, 36, founded the Louisville Tenants Union in 2022 because they believe that organizing is the answer to the nation’s housing woes. “Tenant organizing,” Poe told me with pastoral conviction, “will be to the 21st century what labor organizing was to the 20th century.”

Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. acknowledged Sunday that he abandoned a young dead bear in Central Park after he initially planned to skin the cub for meat. Kennedy described driving north of New York City to go falconing with a group when he saw a woman in a van hit and kill a young bear. "It's going to be a bad story," Kennedy predicted in the video as people laughed. A dead bear cub was found in Central Park in 2014, leading to significant media coverage. The New York City Department of Parks and Recreation referred NBC News' request for comment to the New York Police Department, which did not immediately respond.

Stocks had a rough week, topped off with a pummeling Friday after the July jobs data came in weaker than expected. Until then, bad economic news was good news for the stock market, because it meant the Federal Reserve would start cutting interest rates sooner. On Thursday, a drop in U.S. manufacturing activity for July and a jump in initial jobless claims dragged down the market. Next week is light on economic data, so expect earnings reports and CEO commentaries to drive the market action. A block away, the city had quietly begun sheltering migrants inside an empty 10-building office compound. Over the next few months, it would become one of the city’s biggest shelter complexes — housing more than 4,000 migrants just a few blocks from a residential neighborhood. The gargantuan scale of the shelters swiftly tested nearby residents in the liberal enclave of Clinton Hill. Their willingness to welcome migrants soon gave way to a litany of quality-of-life complaints, from littering and loitering to concerns about safety, leading to crowded town-hall meetings and pressure on Mayor Eric Adams to reverse course. On the night of July 21, a migrant man was shot and killed at a park near the shelter.
