Police officers on Thursday night raided a complex at the University of California, Berkeley, that had been occupied by pro-Palestinian protesters, taking several people away in handcuffs. A university spokesman said at least 12 people had been arrested, but that the number was expected to grow. The new encampment sprang up at the Anna Head complex on Wednesday after demonstrators dismantled another larger camp earlier this week following a tentative agreement with university officials. Some in the splinter group remained overnight in the complex, a fire-damaged structure near People’s Park, while others camped in tents outside it, hanging Palestinian flags and spray-painting the area. Around 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, dozens of officers from the California Highway Patrol and local police and sheriff’s departments began surrounding the area, using bullhorns to order protesters to disperse within 30 minutes or face arrest.

Their posts sometimes come with florid captions about the joy and freedom that come from submitting to their husbands, because biblical submission doesn’t connote inferiority. The whole discussion can be a trap because the content itself is meant to be a heightened provocation — some tradwife creators post things that they label as triggering opinions and then say they get so much hate for being stay-at-home moms. But they rely on that dissonance in order to create more engagement (which leads to more clicks and more money). These posts have a way of painting feminists as haters who resist their true nature and casting career women in opposition to women who don’t work for pay.

A larger-than-life (7.5 foot-by-5.5 foot) canvas, the portrait shows the king standing in his Welsh Guards uniform, hands on the hilt of his sword, a half-smile on his face, with a butterfly hovering just over his right shoulder. As the fog of dawn lifted one morning in mid-November 1872, Claude Monet looked out the window of his hotel room in the French city of Le Havre and furiously painted his vision of its industrial harbor. He flung his brush with quick strokes and played with the water, stretching it with rays of color. In one sitting, he created “Impression, Sunrise,” a painting of a vivid orange sun with its reflection shimmering in the sea. In 1874, Monet, who grew up in Le Havre on the Normandy coast, included the painting in an exhibition of 30 artists’ work organized in response to the Paris Salon, an annual showcase of academic art. “I thought to myself, this has made an impression on me so there must be impressions somewhere in there.”
