What Is It About Montecito?
  + stars: | 2023-07-30 | by ( Amy Larocca | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
Montecito is where Gwyneth Paltrow goes when the pressures of Brentwood are too much. Jennifer Aniston bought a $16.5 million property from Ms. Winfrey, who had not had time to use it. But it’s not just the famous who come to Montecito, it’s also the straight-up rich. Montecito is loaded with the less-recognizable names behind very recognizable things, including Ty Warner, the press-shy inventor of Beanie Babies, who lives in a rose-colored mansion with views of the whole landscape. It’s a dizzying combination of old wealth, new wealth and outrageous physical beauty that has begun to attract an ever-wider range of dreamers.

CNN —Oscar-winner Michelle Yeoh has married her longtime partner Jean Todt in a ceremony in Switzerland – nearly two decades after the French businessman first proposed to her. We love you and here’s to many more to come,” the Malaysian actress wrote. The post included images of the two exchanging rings and another of them sitting snuggled together on a bed decorated with flower petals. Todt posted the framed image on the platform X, formerly known as Twitter, over the weekend, thanking long-time Bond producer Barbara Broccoli for the “touching” wedding gift. Todt, who made his name as a World Rally Championship co-driver, is also a former president of Formula 1’s governing body, the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile.

What lies beneath Land mines left by Russian forces in Ukraine pose a deadly threat to Kyiv's military - and civilians in liberated territory. On average, anti-vehicle mines caused more incidents with multiple fatalities than anti-personnel mines did. GICHD has documented at least 12 types of anti-personnel mines and nine types of anti-vehicle mines in use in Ukraine. Formerly occupied towns in Kyiv; Sumy, Chernihiv, Mykolaiv and Kharkiv oblasts all saw a large number of mines, especially anti-personnel mines, left in place, Mathewson said. Ukraine is a signatory to the 1997 Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines and on their Destruction, and had been destroying its anti-personnel mines when the war began.

The downside of car camping is the fact that these campgrounds are often packed to the rafters with other campers. While RV camping may seem like a recent phenomenon, it’s actually been around for more than 100 years. Among the websites that list RV campgrounds and post very useful user ratings are RVshare/Hipcamp, RV Life and Good Sam. Other than maybe car camping, it requires the least expense and equipment. The U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management has set aside areas for free camping in national forests, national grasslands and BLM-managed lands.

But one recent PR campaign has centered on Justice Clarence Thomas, The Washington Post reported. But one more recent campaign was directed at Justice Thomas, who had already spent about three decades on the Court's bench. According to the Post, a nonprofit called the Judicial Education Project paid the lawyer about $300,000 in 2016 for "media projects." "Since his confirmation on October 15, 1991, Justice Thomas has been a stalwart defender of the original meaning of the Constitution." WASHINGTON, July 21 (Reuters) - Former President Donald Trump's trial over his alleged mishandling of classified documents will begin on May 20 next year, according to a U.S. court order on Friday. Trump's lawyers had resisted setting a date but said any trial should take place after the November 2024 U.S. presidential election, in which he is front-runner for the Republican nomination. A Trump spokesperson said the trial schedule "allows President Trump and his legal team to continue fighting" the criminal case. The case is one of several legal woes Trump faces as he campaigns for 2024. He said on Tuesday he had received a letter saying he is a target of a grand jury investigation into efforts to overturn his 2020 presidential election defeat.

The judge overseeing Donald Trump’s trial on charges of illegally retaining classified documents set a trial date of May 20, 2024 — splitting the difference between the government’s request to begin in December and Trump’s desire to postpone until after the 2024 election. The decision, Judge Aileen Cannon’s first significant call in the proceedings, puts the high-stakes trial after the bulk of the Republican Party’s presidential primaries. Trump is currently the dominant front-runner, and his legal obligations to be in court will overlap with his campaign schedule. Cannon, who was appointed by Trump in 2020, was randomly assigned to the case from a pool of potential judges. Trump is also facing a flurry of other legal threats, including civil and criminal trials in New York set for early next year.

An Untested Judge in the Trump Documents Case

Judge Aileen M. Cannon, a previously obscure Trump judicial appointee, has been viewed with incredulity by much of the legal establishment ever since she issued a ruling temporarily halting the federal investigation into the former president’s handling of classified documents. After a conservative appeals court slapped her down, Democrats said she was either incompetent or some kind of black-robed Trojan horse for the MAGA movement. “The notion that she’s inexperienced is misplaced and ignores her exceptional résumé before taking the bench,” said Jesse Panuccio, a prominent Florida defense lawyer who served in the Trump administration as acting associate attorney general. “It also penalizes her for being a mild-mannered woman. Over two hours, she left little doubt as to whose courtroom it was.

Trump's jurors in his classified docs trial will come from a very red swatch of South Florida. The case's judge announced on Friday that the trial will start in May 2024 in Fort Pierce, Florida. US District Judge Aileen Cannon, who Trump nominated, signed an order Friday announcing that the former commander-in-chief will be on trial beginning May 24, 2024, in Fort Pierce. That's good news for Trump because Fort Pierce, in St. Lucie County, is in an overwhelmingly red area of South Florida. All eyes were on her when she was randomly selected to oversee the Justice Department's case against Trump this summer.

Former President Donald Trump's trial on charges of mishandling classified documents will begin on May 20, 2024, a federal judge ordered Friday. Trump last month pleaded not guilty to 37 criminal counts related to his retention of classified documents after leaving the White House in 2021 and subsequent alleged efforts to conceal them from the government. The DOJ's proposal to start the trial in December, meanwhile, "is atypically accelerated and inconsistent with ensuring a fair trial," she added. Cannon's schedule laid out dozens of procedural deadlines ahead of the spring 2024 trial. The government has until Sept. 7 to turn over relevant classified documents to the defense in discovery.

The federal judge overseeing former President Donald J. Trump’s prosecution on charges of illegally retaining dozens of classified documents set a trial date on Friday for May 2024, taking a middle position between the government’s request to go to trial in December and Mr. Trump’s desire to push the proceeding until after the 2024 election. In her order, Judge Aileen M. Cannon said the trial was to be held in her home courthouse in Fort Pierce, Fla., a coastal city two-and-a-half hours north of Miami that will draw its jury pool from several counties that Mr. Trump won handily in his two previous presidential campaigns. Judge Cannon also laid out a calendar of hearings, throughout the remainder of this year and into next year, including those concerning the handling of the classified material at the heart of the case. The scheduling order came after a contentious hearing on Tuesday at the federal courthouse in Fort Pierce where prosecutors working for the special counsel, Jack Smith, and lawyers for Mr. Trump sparred over when to hold the trial.

July 18 (Reuters) - Donald Trump's lawyers are due in court in Florida on Tuesday for a hearing in which a federal judge will begin to consider how to hold a trial of the former U.S. president on charges of mishandling classified documents without publicly exposing top secret information. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges brought by Special Counsel Jack Smith, who was appointed by U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland last year. Among the logistical issues Trump's lawyers and prosecutors are expected to discuss are deadlines for prosecutors to turn over classified documents that may be used as evidence and the timing for when Trump's lawyers must notify the government whether he intends to use classified documents to defend himself against the charges. The charges against Trump include violations of the Espionage Act, which criminalizes unauthorized possession of defense information. The defense has sought an indefinite delay, citing among other factors the rigors of Trump's campaign schedule.

People rally in support of the Biden administration's student debt relief plan in front of the the U.S. Supreme Court on Feb. 28, 2023. Following a Supreme Court ruling last month that effectively killed President Joe Biden's original student loan forgiveness plan, the White House is quickly moving ahead with a new strategy to deliver people relief. This time, Biden will rely on a different law to try to legally erase student loan debt — the Higher Education Act. The justices concluded he didn't have the power to do so under the Heroes Act of 2003. This new plan is the topic of an open hearing Tuesday at the U.S. Department of Education, where members of the public can weigh in on the latest relief package and learn more about how it will work.

The judge overseeing the DOJ's case against Trump has the power to tip the scales in Trump's favor. In this case, Cannon will also determine the schedule of the trial itself. Cannon could have enormous influence over what Trump's jury will look likeThe former president also lucked out with the location of the trial. Jury selection is one of the biggest ways in which Cannon can influence the case in Trump's favor. If Cannon grants Trump's request for a trial date after the 2024 general election, that order wouldn't be immediately appealable.

Kise, briefly mentioned the new target letter at a pretrial hearing in Florida on Tuesday on the documents case. In disclosing that he had received the target letter, Mr. Trump said he was given four days to testify before a grand jury if he chooses. Fani T. WASHINGTON, July 18 (Reuters) - Ukraine's counter-offensive against Russia is far from a failure, but the fight ahead will be long and bloody, the top U.S. general said on Tuesday, even as casualties on both sides mount and the front lines have moved only incrementally. The United States and other allies have spent months building Ukraine a "mountain of steel" of weaponry and training Ukrainian forces in combined arms techniques to help Kyiv pierce formidable Russian defenses during its counter-offensive. Asked whether the counter-offensive was a failure, at least so far, General Mark Milley, chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said: "It is far from a failure.
