After being turned away from Haiti's only general hospital, her daughter Myleisha was finally accepted at Fontaine Hospital, a UNICEF-sponsored facility in the capital Port au Prince - in an area the rest of her family considers too unsafe to visit. The Fontaine Hospital is located in the Cite Soleil neighborhood, where the G9 and G-Pep gangs have been fighting a vicious turf war. "We are in one of the poorest areas of the country, and also one of the most dangerous," said hospital founder Jose Ulysse. The UN World Food Programme (WFP) says nearly half of Haiti's population - some 4.9 million people - are going hungry. Without more UNICEF funding, hospital director Kareen Ulysse said she doubts the Fontaine can keep running for another year.

Digital ad vultures descend on TV’s carcass

NEW YORK, July 28 (Reuters Breakingviews) - The digital advertising hunt is back on. Reuters Graphics Reuters GraphicsAlthough Meta and Alphabet dominate the digital ad market, there’s plenty of money yet to fight for. Comcast (CMCSA.O), for example, said on Thursday that U.S. ad revenue at its NBC Universal media division fell 5% and overall EBITDA was down nearly a fifth. Despite the volatile nature of advertising revenue because of its close links to economic trends, it also typically generates healthy operating margins. It’s no wonder then that Amazon.com (AMZN.O), Walmart (WMT.N), DoorDash (DASH.N) and many more are descending on TV’s carcass.

July 26 (Reuters) - Coca-Cola Co (KO.N) raised its annual revenue and profit forecasts after beating quarterly results on the back of higher pricing, with demand for its sodas remaining resilient at a time when consumers are cutting back on non-essential spending. Earlier this month, rival PepsiCo (PEP.O) also raised its annual revenue and profit forecasts for a second time this year after beating second-quarter results, easing worries over a slowdown in demand due to price hikes. Coca-Cola's average selling prices rose 10% in the second quarter, while in North America volumes declined 1%, showing little impact to demand with overall unit case volumes remaining flat. Coca-Cola forecast full-year core earnings per share to rise between 5% and 6%, compared with previous expectation of a 4% to 5% increase. July 26 (Reuters) - Manchester City will fight to keep Kyle Walker as Bayern Munich circle to lure him away, the Premier League champions' manager Pep Guardiola said. England international Walker, who has a year left on his City contract, has been one of Guardiola's key players. "He's an incredibly important player for us... His specific qualities are irreplaceable," Guardiola told reporters before Wednesday's pre-season friendly between the two clubs. We will fight for him like I'm sure Bayern will... Asked if Walker would feature against German champions Bayern in Tokyo, Guardiola said: "We need our best players out there against Bayern and we hope he is going to stay with us next season, so why should he not play?"

In the darkest moments of the financial crisis in 2008, former Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao lectured a group of U.S. government officials and business executives in New York. “In the face of economic difficulties,” he said, “confidence is more precious than gold.”The Chinese economy then was teetering. Today it’s sputtering, facing the dimmest prospects in decades, and China’s leaders are learning the hard way exactly what Mr. Wen meant. Beijing unveiled a 31-point set of guidelines on Wednesday to bolster the confidence of the private sector. But in private, others I interviewed dismissed the party’s pep talk in words that can be best translated as, “Save it for the suckers.”

Reuters previously reported that Coutts was closing Farage's accounts mainly for commercial reasons, citing a source familiar with the matter. The BBC previously reported Farage had fallen below the financial threshold required to be a customer of the private bank - something Farage said he had had no knowledge of. A Coutts spokesperson told Reuters that its ability to respond to Farage's fresh claims were restricted by obligations to protect client confidentiality. Farage told Reuters the issue "raises very broad questions about our banks and how deeply political they have become." Farage previously said he believed it was because he was deemed a "politically exposed person" (PEP), meaning banks have to apply additional scrutiny to accounts.

Many of the reasons to be bullish on PepsiCo are already priced into the stock, Morgan Stanley warned. After the strong earnings report, Mohsenian said further upside to the company's topline compared with consensus estimates is now more limited in the second half of the year. That makes upside for shares more limited with investors anticipating all this good news ahead, he said. What is aspartame and what do the new WHO rulings mean?
  + stars: | 2023-07-13 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +4 min
Discovered in 1965 by American chemist James Schlatter, aspartame is about 200 times sweeter than regular table sugar. One group of experts, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), said aspartame is a "possible carcinogen". For aspartame, this limit is 40 milligrams of aspartame per kilogram of body weight per day. Aspartame's use in food products has been debated for decades and has also prompted some companies to remove the compound from their products. PepsiCo (PEP.O) removed aspartame from Diet Pepsi in 2015 but brought it back a year later.

July 13 (Reuters) - Cineworld Group (CINE.L) said on Thursday Eduardo Acuna, who runs the Americas operations of Mexican theatre operator Cinepolis, will become its CEO when the company emerges from bankruptcy proceedings, expected this month. The group, which filed for U.S. bankruptcy protection in September, said lenders had agreed to appoint Acuna as CEO of the newly formed parent company after its restructuring plan becomes effective. Cineworld had faced discontent from shareholders over executive pay in 2021, including bonuses to the CEO and his brother and deputy chief Israel Greidinger. Acuna, who has been with Cinepolis since 2005, previously held roles at McKinsey and Co and Goldman Sachs. Cineworld added that it "understands that a selection process for the remaining members of the new company's board is ongoing".
