Among other benefits increases, the contract would increase union members’ pay by last least 25% over four years. Union members have launched a series of protests this week outside of Boeing plants and may ultimately reject the new contract union leaders negotiated with Boeing management. The deal will be officially approved if more than 50% of the members vote in favor of the tentative agreement. That would prevent a strike, no matter how many workers vote to strike. If just more than a third of members vote against a strike, then the contract takes effect, no matter the results of the ratification vote.

The first ballots of the 2024 general election are heading to voters, as Alabama officials started mailing them out Wednesday. Alabama requires that voters have a reason to vote by mail, such as being absent from the county or working during Election Day. In 2022, just over 45,000 voters cast absentee ballots, accounting for roughly 3% of all the state's ballots. Officials in Alaska, Idaho, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Arkansas, Minnesota, South Dakota, Virginia, West Virginia, Wyoming, Colorado, Louisiana, Maryland, New Jersey, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, Texas, Mississippi, Oregon, and Vermont will begin sending mail ballots later this month. ☆ Wildfires burn out of control in Southern California and more evacuations ordered

In recent years wildfires have regularly burned in and around Wrightwood, a picturesque mountain town 60 miles east of Los Angeles known for its 1930s cabins. In neighboring Orange County, firefighters used bulldozers, helicopters and planes to control a rapidly spreading blaze called the Airport Fire that started Monday and spread to about 3 square miles in only a few hours. Concialdi said the fire was burning away from homes in Orange County, but there are 36 recreational cabins in the area. Residents along the southern edge of Big Bear Lake were told to leave the area Tuesday night, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department. The blaze had charred more than 51 square miles of grass and brush and blanketed the area with a thick cloud of dark smoke.

Colorado wildlife officials said Monday that they captured and plan to relocate five members of the first pack of wolves to form under the state’s ambitious wolf reintroduction program. That wolf had been involved in repeated attacks on livestock and officials said it would have been kept in captivity if it survived. The pack formed after 10 of the predators from Oregon were released in December over bitter opposition from livestock groups. Ranching groups wanted the wolf pack killed. They said relocating pups risks their survival and wanted more done to keep the pack from killing livestock, such as using electric fencing that can better deter attacks.

New York CNN —Boeing and the Machinists union, which represents 33,000 of its employees on the West Coast, have reached a tentative deal that could avoid a strike that had been set to start this Friday. Before it will take effect, the deal would need the approval of the rank-and-file union members who build commercial jets. But leadership of the union praised the tentative deal and said it achieved the union’s goals. The deal represents Boeing’s biggest pay raise for union members. The $2.15 billion renovation has several purposes, according to Allison Ferre, media relations manager with the Port of Portland, which runs PDX. What PDX passengers will seeThe airport is attempting to provide an arboreal atmosphere with big trees and a lots of natural sunlight streaming into the overhauled terminal. Ema PeterOne of the first things passengers might notice will be 72 large trees, including black walnut, ficus and olive varieties, disbursed throughout the terminal, Port of Portland said. “PDX is the first and last impression for many of our visitors and the renovation of the main terminal is certain to make it a positive one,” Travel Portland President and CEO Jeff Miller said.

CNN —Julia Louis-Dreyfus will host a panel during the Democratic National Convention with the Democratic Governors Association to put a spotlight on the United States’ female governors, the actress’ publicist confirmed to CNN. Louis-Dreyfus – who played the first fictional female vice president of the United States on HBO’s Emmy-winning “Veep” – is a longtime Democratic supporter and has spoken out publicly on women’s issues throughout her career.
