South Korea's president, Yoon Suk Yeol, on Tuesday invoked martial law, a stunning move that threw the nation into turmoil. The last time that a South Korean leader declared martial law was in 1979 following the assassination of the president. South Korea's parliament voted unanimously to block the president's decree, declaring the shocking move invalid, but martial law remains in effect. The semi-official South Korean news agency also said that media and publishers fall under the control of the South Korean military. Hours after Yoon declared martial law, live TV showed South Korea's parliament passing a motion requiring the law to be lifted.

Michael R. Bloomberg, the former New York City mayor, intends to launch a broadside on Tuesday against Robert F. Kennedy Jr., using his opening remarks at a public health conference to warn that installing Mr. Kennedy as health secretary would be “beyond dangerous,” and tantamount to “medical malpractice on a mass scale.”Mr. Bloomberg, in remarks prepared for delivery at the event, the two-day Bloomberg American Health Summit in Washington, called on Senate Republicans to persuade President-elect Donald J. Trump to “rethink” his choice of Mr. Kennedy for health secretary. If Mr. Trump cannot be persuaded, he said, the Senate has “a duty to our whole country, but especially to our children,” to vote against confirming him. “The casualties of Kennedy’s war on science and medicine — Kennedy’s casualties — will pile up, and the body count would be unbearably high” if Mr. Kennedy is confirmed, Mr. Bloomberg said in his prepared remarks. “We can’t allow Kennedy or Trump — or anyone else — to wage that war, which would bring unimaginable suffering to the American people.”Mr. Bloomberg has spent billions of dollars promoting public health, both through his charity, Bloomberg Philanthropies, and through donations to the School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University, which now bears his name. The school and the charity hosted the health summit, with the theme of “advancing public health in uncertain political times.”

In September last year, the top United Nations envoy for the Middle East peace process left a meeting with Hamas leaders in Gaza thinking that he had helped avert a major escalation. The veteran Norwegian diplomat, Tor Wennesland, said he believed that Hamas had agreed to reduce recent tensions along the Israel-Gaza border in exchange for more work permits for Gazan workers. But Hamas had bluffed Mr. Wennesland, along with the Israeli leadership and much of the international community. Days later, the group’s fighters attacked Israel, setting off the deadliest year in the history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. It was a misconception that Mr. Wennesland now says is emblematic of the problem with the international community’s recent approach to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk lost his bid to get his 2018 CEO pay package reinstated on Monday when a Delaware judge upheld her prior ruling that the compensation plan was improperly granted. The package, worth about $56 billion, was the largest compensation plan in U.S. history for a public company executive. Musk attorneys attempted to sway the judge in the Delaware business court after the trial to reverse her opinion rescinding the CEO’s pay plan. Excluding all of the options wrapped up in the pay package, Musk is more than $43 billion richer since Donald Trump’s election victory last month. The Tesla stock Musk still holds is worth close to $150 billion based on Monday’s closing price.

“Y.M.C.A.” singer and co-writer Victor Willis of the band Village People defended President-elect Donald Trump’s use of the song Monday on Facebook. Willis denied that the disco tune was intended as a “gay anthem,” saying he “knew nothing about the Y being a hang out for gays” when he wrote the lyrics. Willis said he wrote “Y.M.C.A.” based on what he knew about the worldwide youth organization at the time, particularly the YMCA branches in the urban areas of San Francisco. Willis said he has received more than 1,000 complaints about the use of “Y.M.C.A” at Trump’s campaign rallies. Data suggests the staple campaign moment drove the song up the charts, with search interest and listenership soaring on Election Day.

An 88-year-old doctor accused of sexually assaulting Indiana University basketball players back in the 1990s has been ordered to appear before a judge Tuesday to determine whether he is competent to be questioned about the alleged abuse. Delaney named the Trustees of Indiana University as defendants in the lawsuit, alleging Title IX violations by the school for failing to protect the students. In response, Indiana University retained the Jones Day law firm to launch an independent investigation into the Bomba allegations. The doctor had played football for Indiana University and was nicknamed “Frankenstein” by coaches and players “due to the large size of his hands and fingers,” the lawsuit added. The accusations that IU turned a blind eye to allegations of a team doctor sexually abusing student-athletes echo another major scandal involving a team doctor.

Special counsel David Weiss's office on Monday appeared to push back on President Joe Biden's claim that its prosecutions of Hunter Biden were politically motivated, calling such allegations "baseless." The Court rejected that claim finding that '[a]s the Court stated at the hearing, Defendant filed his motion without any evidence.' It noted that Hunter Biden "made similar baseless accusations" in the Delaware case, which were rejected by that judge as well. Three appeals court panels also rejected Hunter Biden's arguments, the filing said. Hunter Biden had been scheduled to be sentenced in both cases later this month.

Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller said Monday he is anticipating an interest rate cut in December but is concerned about recent trends on inflation that could change his mind. That would follow a half-point cut in September and a quarter-point reduction in November. “As of today, I am leaning toward continuing the work we have started in returning monetary policy to a more neutral setting,” Waller said. Waller said he will watch incoming employment and inflation data closely. Even with the slowing progress on inflation, Waller said broader economic health has him feeling like it will be appropriate to continue to ease monetary policy.
