Buffalo Bills rookie wide receiver Keon Coleman recently inked a four-year, nearly $10 million contract — but he's still a savvy shopper. At an April press conference, the second round draft pick revealed that he didn't buy his coat at a designer retailer, but instead on sale at Macy's. Coleman paid $79.89 for his yellow Guess puffer coat, a purchase he said was "a nice little deal." "I shop like my mom, I get my coats in the summertime," Coleman said during the press conference. "I bought this jacket for my son because of Keon Coleman," reads one review from May.

Nike, which reports earnings after the bell Thursday, is trading at less than 24 times forward earnings. That's well below the longer-term average of about 29 times forward earnings. On Wednesday, Nike traded more than two times its average daily options volume. The most active call options were the September 100 calls, 8,000 of which traded at an average price of around $3.22. Declining sales (inflation-adjusted) and market share, leading to declining investor confidence, explain the lower-than-average historical multiple.

Nike on Thursday reported its slowest annual sales growth in 14 years, excluding the Covid-19 pandemic, as the sneaker giant warned of "challenges" that led it to cut its current year outlook. For the fiscal fourth quarter, the company handily beat earnings estimates as its cost-cutting efforts continue to bear fruit, but Nike fell short on revenue estimates. In fiscal 2024, Nike posted sales of $51.36 billion, which is flat compared to the prior year. In Europe, Middle East and Africa, Nike posted revenue of $3.29 billion, compared to estimates of $3.32 billion. In Asia Pacific and Latin America, Nike saw $1.71 billion in sales, compared to estimates of $1.77 billion.

Two Adidas employees out in China corruption probe

Hong Kong CNN —Two employees have left Adidas as a result of an ongoing investigation by the German sportswear brand into allegations of corruption in China. Chinese state media outlet Economic View reported Wednesday that both former employees had worked in marketing for Adidas China. The allegations against Adidas executives were contained in an unsigned letter from people calling themselves employees of Adidas China. Greater China — a region that encompasses mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan — accounts for 15% of the company’s sales. In mainland China, Adidas is the second-largest international sportswear brand behind Nike (NKE).

The jeans creator on Wednesday posted fiscal second quarter revenue that fell just short of Wall Street's expectations at a time when shoppers are stocking their wardrobes with denim dresses, skirts and ultra-low-rise baggy pants. It's not clear how sales at Docker's were affected by the timing of Levi's wholesale orders. The changes are necessary because nearly half of Levi's sales these days are coming from its own website and stores. During the quarter, wholesale revenue grew 7%, but excluding the shift in timing of wholesale orders, sales in the channel decreased 4%. Singh noted that wholesale revenue improved on a sequential basis, but the company has a "conservative" view of the channel's growth moving forward.

Here's an update on the chart in a breakout shoemaker that is giving Nike a run for its money. In May, I wrote about On Holding AG (ONON) ahead of its earnings with a buy recommendation. You'll notice that the stock popped on the week of May 14th following the earnings report above the 2023 highs of $36.90. Looking at the valuation, NKE is trading about 26 times 2024 expected earnings and 25 times 2025 expected earnings. DECK is ranging from 10% to 20% revenue growth from the same period last year and ONON is running from 20% to 33% revenue growth.

The growing electricity demand from corporate America, particularly Big Tech, and the retirement of coal plants across the U.S. are creating a major opportunity for renewable energy, according to UBS. UBS sees solar and wind supplying 40% and 30% of the power demand, respectively, while natural gas will meet the remaining 30%. At the same time, "there is a straight line of direct incremental demand and financial support for renewables as corporate electricity demand increases through their 100% clean energy or 100% renewable commitments," the analysts said. Overall, solar will grow to 12.5% of electricity generation by 2030, up from less than 6% in 2023, according to UBS estimates. "There is likely a substantial market opportunity to provide reliable electricity generation and direct infrastructure for data centers," the analysts said.

America’s housing crisis continues to worsen

Washington CNN —Homeowners in America aren’t the only ones struggling with an unaffordable housing market. A report from Harvard University’s Joint Center for Housing Studies released last week showed that both homeowners and renters in recent years have become increasingly burdened by climbing housing costs. That’s all part of a broader struggle in the US housing market, and recent data shows that it hasn’t gotten any better. But there’s a problem: ChatGPT — soon to be integrated into Siri — is banned in China, reports my colleague Samantha Murphy Kelly. The Chicago Fed releases its National Activity Index for May.

Nvidia had some strong moves in the days after its 10-for-1 stock split traded in the market on June 10. Tuesday brought weaker-than-expected May retail sales , which the stock market took in stride, perhaps on the view that softness helps the view that the Federal Reserve will indeed cut interest rates later this year. Ultimately, the economic readings this past week signal that while U.S. growth remains resilient, things are slowing, which is an ideal setup for stock market bulls. The Fed's favorite inflation gauge and the tail end of earning season will be drivers of the market in the week ahead. With stocks set to close out a strong first half of 2024, investors have just one more key inflation hurdle to clear in the week ahead: May's personal expenditure report. Next week's personal consumption expenditure data, the Federal Reserve's preferred inflation gauge, could show whether that overall picture is intact.
