Wealthy millennials and Gen Z are redefining philanthropy
  + stars: | 2024-10-10 | by ( Robert Frank | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +3 min
Wealthy millennials and Gen Zers are redefining the world of charitable giving, seeing themselves more as activists than donors, according to a new study. Older donors give from of a sense of responsibility. Those over the age of 44 were more than twice as likely to give due to "obligation" than younger donors. Those under 43 were more likely to cite self-education and the influence of their social circle as drivers of their philanthropy. The younger wealthy are still building their fortunes and inheriting their wealth, so they're more likely to give their time and help fundraise.

An Afghan man arrested on charges of planning a terrorist attack on Election Day worked as a security guard in Afghanistan for the CIA, two sources with knowledge of the matter told NBC News. “Every Afghan resettled in the U.S. undergoes a rigorous screening and vetting process no matter which agency they worked with,” the official said. The CIA undertook its own large-scale evacuation operation of Afghans who had worked for or helped the agency. Officials say humanitarian parole generally entails far less screening than a Special Immigrant Visa. Authorities say he planned the operation along with a juvenile co-conspirator, described as an Afghan citizen with legal permanent resident status.

Aside from EVs, GM touted its lowering capital costs and the company’s flexibility to produce both traditional vehicles with internal combustion engines and EVs. Shares of GM were roughly level aside from a roughly 3% increase during the beginning of the event. The change to Ultium comes after GM spent billions of dollars to develop in-house “Ultium” batteries and technologies that the automaker previously touted as “revolutionary” and the ultimate technologies to be able to build a profitable EV business. The company said the batteries and the technologies will remain, but the name “Ultium” will not, other than production operations such as its “Ultium Cells” joint venture plants with LG Energy Solution. GM has been rethinking its EV battery strategy amid changing market conditions and an influx of new, outside executives, including Tesla veterans JP Clausen, who now leads GM manufacturing, and Kurt Kelty, GM’s vice president of battery.

Mortgage rates are down, but many owners and buyers are waiting for them to fall more. That should help thaw a real-estate market that had frosted over due to elevated mortgage rates. AdvertisementProperty owners are also poised to benefit from lower rates, Xu and her colleagues noted. Many owners are currently locked into the rock-bottom mortgage rates that were common in the late 2010s and early 2020s. "Although mortgage rates have eased, market rates continue to exceed current rates for most homeowners, keeping them locked in 'golden handcuffs,'" said Danielle Hale, Realtor.com's chief economist, in a statement for the report sent to Business Insider.

OpenAI is increasingly becoming a platform of choice for cyber actors looking to influence democratic elections across the globe. The threats ranged from AI-generated website articles to social media posts by fake accounts. The social media content related mostly to elections in the U.S. and Rwanda, and to a lesser extent, elections in India and the EU, OpenAI said. And in May, an Israeli company used ChatGPT to generate social media comments about elections in India. The company said that while most social media posts it identified received few likes or shares, some real people did reply to the AI-generated posts.

Jeffrey Talajic, who runs MagicTripTools.com, analyzed Florida park prices at Walt Disney World and Universal Resort Orlando going back to 1990, using data from the Orlando Sentinel newspaper. Jeffrey Talajic/MagicTripTools.comMindy Marzec, who runs the travel website thisfairytalelife.com, said she always jokes that three things in life are certain: death, taxes and Disney parks raising ticket prices. China's property stimulus measures delivered a modest boost to the market, but they are not enough to turn around the troubled sector, according to analysts. Home sales ticked up in some cities during China's week-long holiday, as stimulus measures boosted homebuyers' sentiment, a report by research group China Index Academy showed. Average daily sales in Beijing jumped 81%, in terms of floor area, compared to the same holiday period the year before. Last year's Golden Week holiday was between Sept. 29 and Oct. 6. The average daily sales figure stood at 107,000 square meters this year, the report showed, against 177,000 square meters in 2021, 158,000 square meters in 2022, and 145,000 square meters in 2023.

Of the 175 key ETFs that we track, just one made a new all-time high on Tuesday – the iShares Expanded Tech-Software Sector ETF (IGV) . IGV, thus, was the first major technology ETF to hit new highs after a very turbulent past few months. Before Tuesday, IGV's last all-time high happened way back in November 21 (nearly three years ago), when the ETF hit an intra-day high of $89.76. For some context, while the SPDR Technology ETF (XLK) hit a low on the same day in November 202222, its snapback unfolded much more quickly. XLK hit a new all-time high way back in July 2023 and has kept going.

For others, such as the $3 billion hedge-fund platform Crestline Summit, it is a part of their expansion plans. One such manager is former Citadel PM Josh White, who started trading at his London-based Regents Gate earlier this year with capital from Crestline. The brand the firm is trying to push externally is that they are "capital partners, not capital providers," Nelson said. Your employer may start covering weight-loss drugs soon
  + stars: | 2024-10-09 | by ( Tami Luhby | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +7 min
A growing number of employers are considering covering the blockbuster weight-loss drugs, several surveys show. Roughly the same share say they are somewhat or very likely to begin covering these medications for weight loss within the next 12 months, according to KFF’s annual Employer Health Benefits Survey. But only 18% of firms in KFF’s survey, which includes those with 200 or more employees, cover GLP-1 drugs primarily for weight loss. Even employers that provide coverage for anti-obesity drugs often put up guardrails, such as requiring employees to receive prior authorization or to try other weight-loss methods first. Outpatient drug costs are expected to climb 11.4% next year, surpassing the 8% increase projected for medical plan costs, according to Segal’s most recent survey.
