Since Biden was never the official nominee, states say there’s no problem for HarrisThe election authorities in 48 states and the District of Columbia offered highly similar comments explaining why Harris does not face any hurdles getting on the ballot there. Chelsea Carattini, spokesperson for Republican Idaho Secretary of State Phil McGrane, said in an interview: “There’s no issue. Tokyo CNN —Kudos to you if you can speak perfect Japanese and order food at a neighborhood sushi bar in Tokyo. But overtourism – fueled by a combination of pent-up post-Covid demands (aka “revenge travel”) and the weak local currency – has recently prompted restaurants in the country to consider the merits of differential pricing. This year, spurred by a weak yen that has fallen to its lowest level against the dollar in decades, the tourists are back - in big numbers. “Some people say, ‘We don’t do this in our country.’ But think about how bad Japanese people’s English skills are. As the less-expensive resident prices are often written in the local language, foreign tourists may not even know they paid more.

Japanese cities like Tokyo and Kyoto, are traditionally known for shrines, temples and historic cultural sites. But as the birthplace of anime, manga and, of course, Pokémon, Japan is also a pop culture powerhouse and a hotbed of kid-friendly activities, from practicing ninja skills to spending time with Snorlax. For a family trip, “the beauty of Japan is you can walk five steps and easily attract the attention of a child,” said Ramesh Krishan, who goes by the name RamKy and whose company, Japan Unfiltered, specializes in candid tours of Tokyo, Mount Fuji and other destinations. “It could be a capsule toy-dispensing machine, a karaoke bar with interesting desserts on display, or even the peppy music heard playing inside train stations.”Here are six stops on a family-oriented tour of the country’s most-visited cities.

UK's Thames Water's troubles mount as credit rating cut to junk
  + stars: | 2024-07-24 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +1 min
Britain's largest water provider Thames Water suffered a blow in its battle to avoid renationalisation on Wednesday as credit rating firm Moody's downgraded its corporate family rating (CFR) and its safest tranche of debt to junk. Moody's downgraded Thames Water's CFR to Ba2 - two rungs into 'junk' rating territory - from Baa3, which is an investment grade and something water firms are supposed to maintain as part of their licence requirements. It safest tranche of debt known as senior secured "Class A" bonds were cut to Ba1, which is one notch into junk, while its riskier "Class B" bonds were dumped five notches lower at B3. Moody's said the downgrade followed this month's provisional ruling from British regulator Ofwat that Thames would not be allowed to raise prices as much as it had requested, and because of its "weakening liquidity position". "Almost certainly it will mean special administration for the company," Seaport credit analyst Satish Pulle said, adding that the downgrade had not come as a surprise.

Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin introduced the one-time signing bonus of 1.9 million rubles (about $22,000) for city residents who join the military, according to a statement on Tuesday. Putin initially ordered an immediate “partial mobilization” of Russian citizens in September 2022 following a string of defeats that caused recriminations in Moscow. Russia has recruited as many as 15,000 Nepalis to fight its war in Ukraine, with many of them left traumatized, while an unknown number remain missing or possibly dead. The Secret Service denied some of former President Donald Trump's requests for additional security resources over the past two years, an official with the agency confirmed to NBC News. The Secret Service official said extra security accommodations could not always be made for Trump due to the department's limited resources. "In some instances where specific Secret Service specialized units or resources were not provided, the agency made modifications to ensure the security of the protectee," Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi told NBC News. Last Sunday, he said the assertion that the Secret Service had rebuffed Trump's team's requests for additional security were "absolutely false." Biden said he would speak to the matter further later this week. His decision, made after weeks of growing pressure from members of his own party, throws Democrats into uncharted territory. Sen. Joe Manchin, an independent from West Virginia who caucuses with Democrats, called for an "open process" to select a new nominee as he called for Biden to step aside earlier on Sunday. CNN —The Curiosity rover has made its most unusual find to date on Mars: rocks made of pure sulfur. “I think it’s the strangest find of the whole mission and the most unexpected,” said Ashwin Vasavada, Curiosity project scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. Previously, while exploring Mars, NASA’s Spirit rover broke one of its wheels and had to drag it along while using the other five to drive backward. And Vasavada says it’s what inspired the team to “look behind” the Curiosity rover — otherwise they wouldn’t have seen the crushed sulfur. Imagine a system that lets big landlords in your city work together to raise rents, using detailed, otherwise-private information about what their competitors are charging. Such a system is already underway, according to a series of lawsuits filed by tenants and prosecutors across the country. The plaintiffs argue that real estate software from a company called RealPage is being used by apartment owners to increase rents. In a vast majority of cases, landlords adopt the suggested prices, passing the costs on to tenants, the plaintiffs assert. RealPage, owned by the private equity firm Thoma Bravo, advertises its software to landlords as a tool that can help them outperform the market by 3 to 7 percent.
