CNN —Every host country of the Olympic Games faces a reckoning. But the world’s biggest sporting event holds a mirror up to a nation like few other events. After a public investment of billions of dollars and years of preparations, what do we, the host country, want to show the world about ourselves? Far-right leader Marine Le Pen took aim at Nakamura’s supposed “vulgarity,” suggesting that her representing France would “humiliate” the country. “What is the point of holding the Olympic Games in France if we then hide who we are?” asked Marion Marechal, an arch-conservative whose party attracts the country’s disaffected Catholics.

However, when it came to deciding who to invite to this spring soiree, the mood got heavy in a hurry. I wondered if my son was becoming a mean kidMy plan was to invite the whole class just like we did the previous year, but when I mentioned this to my son, he was not on board. AdvertisementI asked him how he felt when he wasn't invited to an event and reminded him how important it is to always be kind. The kids in question didn't even end up attending the party, but that really wasn't the point. Next year, he still might not want to invite the whole class for his birthday so perhaps we pivot and also have an end of the year class party with everyone, an idea Edlynn suggested.

When your kid comes out as trans, here’s what to do
  + stars: | 2024-06-02 | by ( Kristen Rogers | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +11 min
CNN spoke with a doctor, gender rights activists and parents of trans children about what to say when a child comes out as transgender, how to address certain challenges and what receiving gender-affirming care is like. Some parents want to support their child but worry if their gender identity is the result of a phase, or if they’ll change their mind later. It would be their decision resulting from the exploration of their gender identity, rather than someone trying to control it for them. Rhyland’s son later realized he is trans masculine nonbinary and uses he/him pronouns, and he’s OK with Rhyland calling him her son. (Trans masculine nonbinary means someone’s gender identity is nonbinary, yet they present in a typically masculine fashion with their name, style and more.)

In fact, for him at least, one is not about the other; Seinfeld openly disdains politics. Like Seinfeld, Carolla imagines parts of the 20th century as a better time. Women got more jobs and power (despite, Carolla writes, being “better at home with the kids than in the workplace”) and men became metrosexuals. The masculinity they defend is adamantly heterosexual, threatened not just by women but also by gay men and gender non-confirming people. In fact, the call for a return to 1950s-style masculinity has found a number of high-profile political supporters in recent years.

“Art is one of our oldest creations (humans invented paint long before the wheel), one of the earliest means of communication (we drew long, long, long, long before we could write), and one of our most universal urges,” she wrote. But when you watch artists making art, it is a physical experience. Different art forms affect the brain and body in different ways. Just as when we are prescribed medications, (it’s true that) types, doses and durations of art work differently for different people. CHICAGO — Pfizer on Friday said its drug for an advanced form of lung cancer showed promising long-term results in a late-stage trial, which may help establish it as the new standard treatment for the condition. The drug, called Lorbrena, also cut the risk of the cancer progressing in patients' brains. Only about 5% of all non-small cell lung cancer patients have the mutation, which causes cancer cells to grow and spread abnormally. But Pfizer's drug isn't currently considered the standard – or the most appropriate and widely used – treatment for the condition. Nearly 300 people in the trial either received Lorbrena or Pfizer's older lung cancer drug Xalkori.

Haidt describes exactly what parents fear: that social media and phone use are contributing to the malaise of young adults. The idea that phones are bad for younger teens has hit a crescendo — and parents are taking action. The teens have been told that phones are bad for teens, so they've convinced themselves that their friends who had phones earlier are now addicted and worse off. But there's also pushback on the overall idea that scientific evidence points to social media and phones being bad for teens' mental health. And yet, even if academic studies are lacking, it is really hard to ignore common sense about teens and phones.

Trump’s vigilAs Merchan laid out his instructions for the first time on Wednesday, Trump watched from the defense lawyers’ table. Trump’s routine — aimed at voters as he seeks to delegitimize the case before the jury makes up its mind — is getting old. One new wrinkle Wednesday was his warning that the jury instructions could doom his defense. Dollar ebbs as markets await key global inflation reports

In this photo illustration, a person is seen holding 100, 50, and 5 U.S. dollar bills in his hand. The dollar waned on Tuesday following a slight pick up in risk appetite, but it held tight ranges against its peers ahead of key inflation data from major economies this week that markets are looking to for guidance on the global interest rate outlook. The euro was a touch firmer at $1.0860 despite some dovish comments from European Central Bank policymakers on Monday and data showing German business morale stagnated in May. Down Under, the Aussie edged 0.03% higher to $0.6657, with the country's monthly consumer price index data also due on Wednesday. BOJ Governor Kazuo Ueda said on Monday the central bank will proceed cautiously with inflation-targeting frameworks, noting that some challenges are "uniquely difficult" for Japan after years of ultra-easy monetary policy.

The shift to New York City spring follows a familiar pattern: skittishly unpredictable weather leading to uncertain modes of dress. But with the rise in temperature, the style of the city often blooms along with it. It’s marvelous to behold; discarding heavy wools for lighter cottons, short skirts and even shorter sleeves. One of the big standouts is the white maxi skirt, a signal of a lightness of mood and fresh possibilities. Finally, a standing ovation for the men, who were impeccably groomed.

CNN —Donald Trump’s first criminal trial has arrived at its dramatic final act with lawyers for both sides primed on Tuesday to hammer home their cases before jurors consider a verdict that could make history. They argued during the trial that there was no evidence of criminal intent. The trial has not gripped the attention of the country as it might have were television cameras allowed in the courtroom. And Trump used his multiple criminal indictments to his political advantage in clearing the Republican nominating field. The time off only seems to have escalated Trump’s fury as one of the defining weeks of his life dawns.

But the business experience in the retail health clinic space has largely disappointed. Walmart and the problem of volume vs. priceIn 2019, Walmart announced a bold initiative to open 4,000 in-store health clinics by 2029. "Primary health care is a low margin business," said Arielle Trzcinski, a principal analyst covering health care at research firm. "Compared to what they see in traditional retail, health care is a fundamentally different business," Trzcinski said, citing the challenges of navigating insurance companies and administrative burdens that health care brings. In-store health clinics can be profitable and viable, and retailers are experimenting with piecemeal approaches tailored to the local market.

Dollar firm ahead of global inflation data
  + stars: | 2024-05-27 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +4 min
The dollar made a steady start to the week, as investors were focused on U.S., European and Japanese inflation data to guide the global interest rate outlook. The euro , which gained 0.9% on the dollar last week, was in the middle of a range it has held for more than a year at $1.0846. German inflation on Wednesday and euro zone readings on Friday will be watched for confirmation of a European rate cut that traders have priced for next week. The dollar had fallen back after data showed a slowdown in consumer price rises in April and disappointing retail sales, before strengthening last week thanks to better-than-expected PMI survey data. China's yuan finished last week weaker than 7.24 per dollar, its lowest level since early May.

Tuya shares closed Friday at $1.99, down more than 13% for the year so far. "Key play on Chinese companies going overseas, with a global leading position," the analysts said.
