Along with a few other lucky travelers, I nabbed a seat on the sold-out excursion and was transported back in time to the golden age of travel — when it was a social occasion and not just a way to get from point A to point B. They wanted to protect abortion rights and stop candidates beholden to Republican former president Donald Trump. That surprised Democratic Party strategists and pollsters, who had expected inflation would trump everything, including concerns about the loss of abortion rights. Michigan voters approved a ballot issue that gave abortion state constitutional protection and re-elected Governor Gretchen Whitmer, who had vowed to “fight like hell” to protect abortion rights. Sydney Wright, an 18-year-old student at the University of Nevada, Reno, said she counts herself as a conservative but voted Democratic because of abortion. THE TRUMP FACTORLike Wright, Nyasha Riley, 37, a registered Republican in Phoenix, voted for Democrats because of abortion rights and Trump.

The ironies abound in “ Selena Gomez : My Mind & Me,” a documentary about the child star turned pop idol and writer-performer of the self-care anthem. “Who says you’re not worth it?” Were she asking herself, the answer would be “Selena Gomez.” She is startlingly candid about her physical and mental health and the rigors of celebrity itself. But for all the media scrutiny and TMZ-style reportage that plague her, had Ms. Gomez lived in another era—say, that of Marilyn Monroe —her crippling self-doubt, insecurities and depression might have been suffered in private, or been covered up, and tragedy might have ensued. Early on we get an avalanche of highly stylized, black-and-white concert footage, which is exhilarating stuff. But it also makes one realize that with an ample trove of chaotic images and sound—plus some expert editing—you could fashion a horror-thriller sequence about anybody and anything.
"I can go down the list and check things: incumbency, check Wild; inflation, check Scheller; district reconfiguration, check Scheller; abortion issue, check Wild." The Pennsylvania Senate race is also hotly contestedWith the Republican Toomey retiring, CNN projected Pennsylvania could flip; NPR agreed, saying it's the "most likely Senate seat to change hands." Chen said that Oz is "continuing to close on" Fetterman, though, because Pennsylvania voters, "especially in the Lehigh Valley, are willing to split their tickets." That poll showed 34% of surveyed voters listed inflation as their most important issue in the election, followed by 28% of surveyed voters who named abortion. "Those are all issues that if we don't maintain a United States Senate, control of the United States Senate, I think this country could be really in danger," Halma said.

LOS ANGELES, Oct 20 (Reuters) - After more than two years of surging demand, the volume of container imports coming through U.S. ports has tumbled sharply, raising questions about where a sector once tracked as a supply-chain stress point will hit bottom. Container import volumes across all U.S. ports hit an all-time high in May and pulled back slightly before plunging in August and September. Volume surged as much as 40% from 2019 levels during the pandemic as retailers raced to meet soaring demand for goods. As recently as March, the Biden administration supply chain task force had tracked container imports as part of a "dashboard" to monitor the distress in the distribution of goods and a contributor to higher prices. Kemmsies said the August and September pullbacks in the volume of container imports is the result of retailers like Walmart (WMT.N) and Amazon.com (AMZN.O) cancelling billions of dollars of orders earlier this year.
A viral video showing a former Mississippi day care worker scaring kids in her care while while wearing a creepy mask has prompted child abuse charges against five day care workers, NBC affiliate WTVA of Tupelo reported. Netflix added 2.4 million new subscribers in its most recent quarter, topping expectations that it would add 1 million. According to a Wedbush survey of Netflix users, he said, people most likely to opt into the ad-supported tier are those who would have otherwise quit the platform. Netflix has also foreshadowed a crackdown on password sharing, with plans to launch a paid family offering next year. Netflix estimates 100 million households worldwide are using shared passwords — 30 million of them in North America. On Monday, it introduced a “Profile Transfer” feature designed to let users who may be sharing a subscription opt into new a Netflix membership.
Reyes said Hollywood films often reflected the politics of their time — and that had an influence on Latino roles. Studies by the Government Accountability Office, the University of Southern California and other groups consistently show that Latinos are underrepresented in the film industry. Just this year, UCLA’s Hollywood Diversity Report documented “enormous gains” by women and people of color, but Latino representation still lagged. Slowly but surely, we are shaking up the narrative in Hollywood.”Calderón is frustrated by the continuing practice of “brownface,” whereby Latino roles go to white actors. Sanchez cited Eugenio Derbez in “Coda” (2021) as an example of a well-written Latino film character.
What appear to be "multiple” human remains were found partially submerged in a river in the small Oklahoma city of Okmulgee Friday, nearly a week after the disappearance of four adult friends, authorities said Friday. It wasn’t clear if the remains were of the four men, Okmulgee Police Chief Joe Prentice told reporters. Prentice said he notified the families of the missing men, who were last seen Sunday night leaving a home by bicycle, even though the remains haven’t been identified. The department on Tuesday named the missing men as Mark Chastain, 32; Billy Chastain, 30; Mike Sparks, 32; and Alex Stevens, 29. That data showed them traveling east, then south, Prentice said, adding that authorities hadn't been searching in the area where the remains were discovered.
FRANKFURT, Oct 14 (Reuters) - Germany's Bayer (BAYGn.DE) said on Friday it plans to legally challenge a jury verdict awarding $275 million to a group of people claiming they suffered from exposure to PCB, a chemical that Bayer's Monsanto business produced until 1977. "We respectfully disagree with the divided jury verdict reached in this 13-plaintiff case and plan to pursue post-trial motions and appeals based on multiple errors and the lack of proof at trial," Germany's Bayer said in a statement. Bayer shares were down 0.9% at 0738 GMT while Germany's blue chip index DAX was up 0.7%. Bayer has since 2020 resolved a majority of cases in litigation with municipalities over waste water contaminated with PCB for $650 million but several other claims remained pending. In August, it set aside 694 million euros for an expected settlement with the State of Oregon over PCB in waste water.
The original Lynn Goldsmith photograph of Prince and Andy Warhol's portrait of the musician. Warhol himself had died in 1987, and the relevant works and copyright to them are now held by the Andy Warhol Foundation, which permitted Vanity Fair to use the image in 2016. The following year the issue ended up in court, with Goldsmith and the foundation suing each other to determine whether Warhol’s image constituted fair use. Images from Andy Warhol's series on the musician Prince. It must, “at a bare minimum, comprise something more than the imposition of another artist’s style on the primary work,” the court added.
A man examines "Self-Portrait" by Andy Warhol during a media preview at Christie's auction house in New York, October 31, 2014. She countersued Warhol's estate for copyright infringement in 2017 after it asked a Manhattan federal court to rule that his works did not violate her rights. Copyright law sometimes allows for the fair use of copyrighted works without the creator's permission. A federal judge found Warhol's works were protected by the fair use doctrine, having transformed the "vulnerable" musician depicted in Goldsmith's work into an "iconic, larger-than-life figure." Documentary filmmakers, fan fiction writers and the estates of other major figures in the pop art movement have come out in support of Warhol.
The case centers on how courts decide when an artist makes "fair use" of another's work under copyright law. The Supreme Court will hear arguments in the estate's appeal of a lower court's decision favoring Goldsmith. The Supreme Court's eventual decision could have broad or narrow implications for fair use depending on the ruling, Tushnet said. The Warhol estate told the Supreme Court the 2nd Circuit's decision "casts a cloud of legal uncertainty over an entire genre of visual art, including canonical works by Andy Warhol and countless other artists." Goldsmith's lawyers told the Supreme Court that a ruling favoring the foundation would "transform copyright law into all copying, no right."
‘Blonde’ Review: More Marilyn Mythologizing
  + stars: | 2022-09-28 | by ( John Anderson | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: +1 min
The public’s endless fascination with Marilyn Monroe might not be exhausted, finally, by “Blonde,” but the viewer will be. At two hours and 47 minutes, Andrew Dominik ’s pseudo-biography is one long slog into sadness and more-than-predictable tragedy, despite a touching portrayal by Ana de Armas and the deliberately artful and often startling filmmaking of Mr. Dominik. If you’re wondering if men are swine, they are, at least according to his adaptation of the Joyce Carol Oates novel. In some ways, Monroe was the human exemplar of the observer effect in physics: When we look at a thing, the thing changes. No one in the history of Hollywood has been looked at more intensely than Monroe.
