Zelenskyy wore a T-shirt saying 'Make Russia small again' during a nightly address. AdvertisementPresident Volodymyr Zelenskyy showed up to his evening video address in an unusual T-shirt and got a scathing reaction from the Kremlin. Emblazoned on the black T-shirt, in red and white lowercase letters, was the phrase: "Make Russia small again." It included territory in modern-day Ukraine, Belarus, and western Russia, with its center in Kyiv, Ukraine's modern-day capital. As of Thursday, a copycat "make Russia small again" T-shirt was for sale on at least one e-commerce site, but it's unclear whether it will catch on.

The remains of an unidentified missile, which Ukrainian authorities claimed to be made in North Korea, is seen at a site of a Russian strike in Kharkiv, Ukraine on January 2. China, Russia and Iran have also held four joint naval drills since 2019, and China is by far Iran’s largest energy buyer. Beijing also carefully manages its relationship with North Korea – which is almost wholly economically and diplomatically dependent on China. “Russia, North Korea, Iran is the type of grouping that China least wants to openly associate itself with,” said Tong Zhao, a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. But even some who managed to escape Israel’s offensive in the north and head farther south toward Gaza City did not survive. The Jerusalem-based human rights group B'Tselem echoed the accusation Tuesday, calling on the international community to "stop the ethnic cleansing of northern Gaza." He also said the "General's plan," a proposal calling for Israel to force the evacuation of residents from northern Gaza through starvation, had not been adopted as Israeli policy. Images released by the IDF of Monday show what it says is a crowd of civilians fleeing the Jabalia refugee camp in northern Gaza. Images published by the Israel Defense Forces over the weekend, showing dozens of men being detained in northern Gaza as thousands of people fled the area en masse, have also sparked alarm.

Cavoli said during the Atlantic Council interview that while Russia's ground forces had suffered severe losses fighting in Ukraine, Moscow had taken notable strides to build them back up. "Now, there's some quality problems, and some of the equipment may not be the newest, but that again is localized to the ground forces," he said. Israel’s war could set Gaza back 69 years, UN warns

CNN —The impact of Israel’s war in the Gaza Strip could erase “over 69 years of progress” in the enclave, the United Nations has warned in a new report, saying that measurement for indicators such as life expectancy, education, income and standard of living are projected to drop to a level estimated for 1955. Israel launched a war on Hamas in Gaza on October 7 last year after the group attacked southern Israel, killing 1,200 people and taking more than 250 hostages. The Israeli offensive has killed more than 42,000 people in Gaza, according to the health ministry there, displaced most of its people and flattened large swathes of the enclave. The UN report, which looks at estimates for the Palestinian territories as a whole, says that over 4 million people in them were affected by poverty in 2024, including 2.6 million newly impoverished people. This brings the poverty rate to 74.3% across the Palestinian territories, according to the report.

TAIPEI, Taiwan — Taiwan’s defense ministry said Tuesday that live-fire Chinese drills in a province facing the island are routine annual exercises but also possibly part of China’s “deterrence effect” in the waters of the Taiwan Strait. China’s Maritime Safety Administration, in a notice late Monday, said an area around Niushan island in Fujian province would be closed off for four hours starting at 9 a.m. Tuesday (9 p.m. Monday ET) for live-fire drills. Taiwan’s defense ministry said in a statement that those exercises were part of routine Chinese training and were being closely monitored. “No matter how large the scale of the drill is, they should not be frequent and close to Taiwan,” he said. China detests Taiwan President Lai Ching-te, who took office in May, as a “separatist” and has rebuffed his calls for talks.

CNN —India and China have reached an agreement on military disengagement along their disputed border, New Delhi said, a step toward reducing frictions between the nuclear-armed neighbors that comes as both countries’ leaders arrive in Russia for a summit. Both foreign ministries declined to comment on whether the two leaders would hold formal one-on-one talks in Kazan. ‘A positive development’The violence in 2020 was followed by a process of disengagement and border talks, but friction points have remained, including areas where both sides previously patrolled but have since become so-called buffer zones. However, even with that restoration, there are other steps that would need to be taken in a long process along the disputed border. “There are many other issues of de-induction and de-mobilization of troops on both sides; infrastructure that has been built, etc.

Russia is unlikely to offer military intervention against Israel on behalf of the Iranians, Saab said, given it is already "too bogged down in Ukraine." Asia-Pacific markets were mixed Monday as traders awaited China's loan prime rate announcement, with focus also on Japan's general election at the end of this week. China's central bank is expected to cut the one-year and five-year LPRs by 20 basis points, according to a note by ING and echoing the statement made by People's Bank of China Governor Pan Gongsheng on Friday. "Data aside, it is worth monitoring if there are potential further government ministry briefings or a potential announcement of the timing for the National People's Congress meeting in the week ahead, as stimulus rollout remains a major theme for markets," ING said.
