CEO Sam Altman explained the company's shift to closed AI models in a Reddit AMA on Thursday. AdvertisementWhy doesn't OpenAI open-source the AI models behind ChatGPT if the company is called OpenAI? Altman responded that open source "plays an important role in the ecosystem and there are great open source models in the world." The comments from Altman follow a year in which OpenAI has received criticism for no longer open-sourcing its AI models. "There is no single open source AI definition, and defining it is a challenge because previous open source definitions do not encompass the complexities of today's rapidly advancing AI models," the spokesperson said.

With Wall Street laser focused on cloud computing this week, Google outpaced its rivals in growth, a key sign for investors that the internet company is gaining traction in artificial intelligence. Amazon Web Services, which remains the market leader, grew 19% to $27.45 billion, meaning it's more than twice the size of Google Cloud but expanding about half as quickly. Second-place Microsoft said revenue from Azure and other cloud services grew 33% from a year earlier. Bill Gates is constantly asked for his thoughts on big topics like artificial intelligence, climate change and pandemics. Gates, 69, told LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman during an episode of the "Possible" podcast that published on Wednesday. — even though those types of topics aren't always top of mind for most Americans. It's "one of the most important questions ever," Gates wrote, adding: "It is hard to think of a measure of how a society is doing that reveals more than whether it is protecting its children, and especially its most vulnerable children," Gates wrote. Malnutrition probably isn't a top concern for the average person living in an area that's relatively unaffected by the issue, Gates told Hoffman.

Julian Quinones/CNNFormer Trump administration officials have outlined the speed at which they intend to dismantle the progress the Biden administration made on climate change. Trump has publicly distanced himself from the ideological blueprint, but CNN found at least 140 authors worked in the Trump administration. But given the momentum of the clean energy train, some experts and analysists doubt that Trump would be able to derail it entirely. While the green trend in economics now has Republican states like Texas leading the nation in clean energy installations, Germany, Japan and China got there first. Trump’s plan is to undo that progress, throw billions of dollars of clean energy investment out the window and give other countries the economic opportunity, instead.

CNBC's Jim Cramer on Thursday told investors not to get scared off when a company posts good earnings results but issues more modest guidance, as it doesn't always mean that management is worried about the future. "Some money managers are dumbfounded when a very good company reports a very good quarter but then issues a very conservative forecast," Cramer said. Sometimes, he said, it's worth it to hold on to a company with good earnings while others on Wall Street panic about guidance. For the current quarter, Microsoft predicted revenue between $68.1 billion and $69.1 billion, while analysts surveyed by LSEG were hoping for $69.83 billion. Despite the disappointing guidance, Cramer was appeased by management's explanation for the weaker guidance, particularly commentary from CFO Amy Hood.
