If you look at the other metals like copper and steel and their associated stocks you'll see breakouts as well, and in fact, they are showing more strength than gold stocks. Looking at a chart of copper we'll see a clear breakout above the early 2023 high of $4.35 with the 2022 highs of $5.00 targeted. Fundamentally speaking copper is an industrial metal heavily needed in China and India for infrastructure, transportation, and the green energy buildout. 'Bull flag' pattern The way I'm expressing this bullish thesis in copper is through my holdings in Southern Copper Corp (SCCO) in the dividend portfolio at Inside Edge Capital. That's not exactly cheap, but with the forecasted global demand of copper we think that multiple is justified.

Sopa Images | Lightrocket | Getty ImagesMining of critical minerals plays a crucial role in the global green transition, but the broader industry's bad reputation and other challenges present investment barriers, industry experts warn. Critical minerals include metals such as copper, lithium, nickel, cobalt and rare earth elements, and are important components in emerging green technologies such as wind turbines and electric vehicles. Speaking on a panel at Singapore's annual Ecosperity Week, which ended Wednesday, mining industry experts and investors said the growing demand from green tech makes it necessary to increase government support and capital flows into the critical mining sector. Many of the same companies that mine critical minerals also mine environmentally damaging fossil fuels like coal. One area that has seen recent strides and investments has been in the recycling of critical minerals, which cuts down the need of extraction.

Read previewPresident Joe Biden on Wednesday pitched his version of US-China relations to steelworkers in Pennsylvania — that Beijing isn't only failing to catch up, but struggling on its own. "They've got a population that is more people in retirement than working," Biden said of China. Those were some of the harshest comments Biden has ever made about China, though it's unclear how the president calculated his retirement figures. Instead of posturing himself a Mr. Fix-It, or a lone warrior fighting the good fight against a strong Beijing, Biden on Wednesday told blue-collar workers that the competition, as it stands, already favors America by a landslide. CNN —A record quantity of bribes, including cash, booze, drugs and precious metals, has been seized by Indian election authorities in the run-up to mammoth nationwide polls that begin on Friday. The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Monday revealed it had recovered inducements worth just over $550 million since March — the largest amount in the country’s 75-year electoral history. It marks a “sharp increase” on the more than $400 million in bribes seized by the ECI in the country’s last general election in 2019, the agency said. India’s political parties and leaders routinely preach against election corruption and inducements, but the level of monitoring and tackling of graft across such a vast nation varies widely. Anti-corruption groups had long complained that the system meant a lack of transparency in donations to political parties — allowing corporations to donate large sums without disclosure.

U.S. to Limit Deadly Mining Dust as Black Lung Resurges
  + stars: | 2024-04-16 | by ( Chris Hamby | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Federal regulators on Tuesday will issue new protections for miners against a type of dust long known to cause deadly lung ailments — changes recommended by government researchers a half-century ago. Mining companies will have to limit concentrations of airborne silica, a mineral commonly found in rock that can be lethal when ground up and inhaled. The new requirements will affect more than 250,000 miners extracting coal, a variety of metals, and minerals used in products like cement and smartphones. Tuesday’s announcement is the culmination of a tortuous regulatory process that has spanned four presidential administrations. As progress on the rule stalled, government researchers documented with growing alarm a resurgence of severe black lung afflicting younger coal miners, and studies implicated poorly controlled silica as the likely cause.

Copper is used in data centers for power cables, electrical connectors, power strips and more, Jefferies noted in an April 10 note. It estimates that global copper demand by data centers will increase from 239 kt (thousand tons) in 2023 to at least 450 kt per annum in 2030. "Hopes for GenAI / data centre copper demand growth are adding to investor bullishness on copper, against a backdrop of constrained supply," it wrote. For those looking to buy into the sector, CNBC Pro screened for stocks in the Global X Copper Miners ETF. In addition to the Global X Copper Miners ETF, those who want to invest in this sector via exchange-traded funds can consider the Sprott Copper Miners ETF and the iShares Copper and Metals Mining ETF.

But a new report from Consumer Reports said it recently compared the nutritional profiles of two Lunchables kits served in schools and found they have even higher levels of sodium than the Lunchables kits consumers can buy in stores. The non-profit consumer group said it has petitioned the US Department of Agriculture, which oversees the federally assisted school meal program, to remove Lunchables food kits from school cafeterias, as a result. The introduction of Lunchables in schools came amid proposed changes to school food guidelines by the USDA, which oversees the federally assisted school meal program. The proposed changes aimed to reduce added sugars and sodium levels in school-provided lunches.
