Nine lower-level Republican lawmakers are now running to be speaker, leader of the House and second in line to the presidency — none with any clear shot for the gavel. McCarthy himself calls the whole spectacle “embarrassing” for the House Republicans whose majority is being wasted away and for the U.S. government that cannot fully function. Troy Nehls, R-Texas, who has repeatedly suggested Trump should be elected House speaker. The House Republicans dropped Jordan as their nominee late Friday.

But on Friday Mr. Jordan lost another floor vote, making it three this week, first with 20 defections, then 22, and finally 25. Some of the Jordan dissenters are still angry about the shabby treatment of Mr. McCarthy and the conference’s No. Others seem to believe Mr. Jordan is too much of a firebrand to serve as the party’s frontman. Mr. Jordan lost ground despite some notable attempts at sausage-making.

Jim Jordan is expected to try a third vote to become House speaker, even as his Republican colleagues are explicitly warning the hard-edged ally of Donald Trump that no more threats or promises can win over their support. After two failed votes, Jordan's third attempt at the gavel is not expected to end any better. Jordan had backed the temporary speaker plan as a way to allow more time to shore up support in his own reach for the gavel. What this majority has done is prove it’s not a normal majority.”What was clear was that Jordan’s path to become House speaker was almost certainly collapsing. With Republicans in majority control of the House, 221-212, it appears there is no Republican candidate who can win a clear majority, 217 votes, to become speaker.
