Gabbard and another contentious Trump pick — Pete Hegseth, who has been tapped to lead the Defense Department — came under sharpened scrutiny Sunday as the spotlight shifted from Matt Gaetz, Trump’s toppled choice to be attorney general. Trump’s pick of Hegseth is also facing uncertainty after the release last week of a 2017 police report detailing an alleged sexual assault in California. But the withdrawal of Gaetz — who was already widely disliked in Congress — may leave senators feeling they owe the president-elect on his other highly controversial choices. Trump’s new selection for attorney general, Pam Bondi, is meanwhile being welcomed by many Republicans, suggesting she’ll have an easier path to confirmation than Gaetz. But that would still leave the question of who is acceptable to Trump while being confirmable in the Senate.

Italian lender UniCredit on Monday offered to snap up its domestic rival Banco BPM for roughly 10 billion euros ($10.5 billion) in a move it says is separate from its pursuit of German bank Commerzbank . UniCredit said in a statement early Monday that it is offering 6.657 euros for each share — a slight premium on Friday's close price of 6.644 euros. UniCredit said the purchase, which would be an all-stock deal, would allow the bank to "further strengthen its role as a leading pan-European banking group." Monday's news follows a flurry of merger and acquisition announcements in the European banking sector this year. The industry has been considered ripe for consolidation for years, with cash-rich UniCredit often cited as a possible acquirer.

CNN —President-elect Donald Trump on Monday promised massive hikes in tariffs on goods coming from Mexico, Canada and China starting on the first day of his administration. What America importsThe United States’ top import from Canada is oil, which reached a record 4.3 million barrels per day in July, according to the US Energy Information Administration. The United States imports a significant amount of electronics from China, in addition to machinery, toys, games, sports equipment, furniture and plastics. The Trump tariffs also hit foreign steel, aluminum, washing machines and solar panels. He did just that when he was last in the White House, placing large tariffs on goods, primarily from China.

Never before, lobbyists say, has the geographic center of power shifted so dramatically with the arrival of a new administration. By leveraging his access to Trump, Ballard Partners was able to compete with the old white-shoe lobbying firms that have been the industry's dominant players for decades. Corporate clients need lobbyists who appreciate that Trump is "disrupting the status quo in Washington," Sayfie, the Ballard lobbyist, says. Some major companies, lobbyists say, have been caught off guard by the rapid pace of Trump's transition moves. Those who bankroll his staff and travel before he takes office, lobbyists say, stand to build connections and curry favor with the once and future commander in chief.

This is one of several misconceptions about nuclear energy: America’s nuclear waste is not buried in a mountain or tucked at the bottom of a deep, rocky cavern. That is almost entirely because Americans are by and large opposed to living anywhere near nuclear waste, and suspicious of governments’ or utilities’ attempts to assuage nuclear fears. The byproduct of nuclear energy is still associated with atomic bombs or nuclear meltdowns. On the threshold of America’s nuclear energy renaissance, federal officials are pleading with communities to say yes to storing spent fuel. No state has yet raised its hand to store the country’s nuclear energy waste, despite the lucrative deals it could foment.

New York CNN —Business leaders say they are relieved President-elect Donald Trump made a safe choice to lead the Department of Treasury after more unconventional selections to other cabinet posts. Hedge fund executive Scott Bessent survived an internal squabble over the role of Treasury secretary, a key position that will face almost immediate deadlines and pressures. “Bessent is reasonable and pragmatic.”JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon, one of the most powerful executives on Wall Street, is a fan, too. And for this key position, Trump opted to go with a pick that is not expected to draw a contentious confirmation battle. Trump instead picked Lutnick for Commerce secretary, another key role, though not as prominent as Treasury.

The last time President Donald J. Trump was in the White House, Senator Mitch McConnell, the Kentucky Republican who was then the majority leader, played a crucial role in empowering him and pushing through his agenda. But Mr. McConnell, the longest-serving Senate leader, is stepping down from that post in January. This time he appears to be positioning himself to do the opposite, choosing to focus on issues that could put him at odds with Mr. Trump on policy and personnel at the dawn of his second term. In recent days, including during a late-night session of votes on the Senate floor last week, Mr. McConnell, 82, has told colleagues that his impending exit from leadership has left him feeling “liberated.”He has signaled skepticism about some of the president-elect’s most divisive picks for his administration, staying mum on their selections and saying last week that the withdrawal of former Representative Matt Gaetz from consideration as attorney general was “appropriate.” And Mr. McConnell has telegraphed that as he moves to cement his legacy in his remaining time in the Senate, he plans to prioritize two issues that just happen to be subjects on which he disagrees strongly with Mr. Trump.

Conventional wisdom holds that Musk — the world’s richest man and key Donald Trump ally — and his friends are just joking. But Musk’s posts are adding to the anxiety that MSNBC staffers are feeling about the reelection of Donald Trump and the recently announced spinoff of Comcast’s cable channels. I learned that more than one benevolent billionaire with liberal bonafides has already reached out to acquaintances at MSNBC to express interest in buying the cable channel. Instead, he is moving MSNBC and a half dozen other cable channels into “SpinCo,” a pure-play cable programming company. I have sensed quite a bit of enthusiasm at MSNBC about “SpinCo,” actually, because the new structure should allow for more investment into MSNBC, CNBC and the other brands.

After Matt Gaetz withdrew from consideration for attorney general, President-elect Donald Trump selected former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi for the role. [END TAPE]KRISTEN WELKER:According to the Washington Post, President-elect Trump plans to fire the team that worked with the special counsel. So, I think President Trump is picking reformers for these Cabinet positions. After the midterms Joe Biden said that there was no way President Trump would ever be back in the White House. I also think he's going to face some skepticism by Republicans on using the military, for instance, going kind of into different states.

Despite receiving complaints of exploitation from students, Bondi and then-California Attorney General Kamala Harris both declined to join the investigation. Harris attacked Trump in the 2020 and 2024 elections and painted him as a business fraud and threat to democracy. AdvertisementThis post originally appeared in the Insider Today newsletter. TikTok videos espoused the benefits of #publicsector jobs, and Google searches for "how to get a government job" hit a five-year high. Several careers consultants told Business Insider they were already experiencing a rush of demand from workers ready to shift to the private sector. But ask any white-collar professional, and they'll tell you a horror story that would prove otherwise. Hiring has held up well for low-earning workers, but those making six figures or more are in the midst of a white-collar recession.

Hegseth on Thursday huddled with a handful of Republican senators, many of them seen as close allies of Trump, for a series of meetings. But while some members of the party signal support for the nomination, other Republicans on the Hill warn that there are mounting concerns about Hegseth. With a 53-seat majority, Hegseth and other Trump nominees can afford to lose only three Republican votes, leaving little room for error. Trump’s transition team was in the middle of announcing new Cabinet picks when they were informed of the sexual assault allegation against Hegseth, CNN reported, stunning several members of the team.
