Last year, I made what I thought was a pretty solid money move: I opened a high-yield savings account and moved my money from a savings account earning me very little interest. Ally's high-yield savings account had a 2.0% interest rate at the time. My savings account back then was offering only 0.05% interest, and the simple maneuver yielded 40 times the savings. I'm still using my high-yield savings accountI keep a cushion of funds in my Ally high-yield savings account for big-ticket purchases, vacations, and emergencies. But for now, I'm happy with keeping my savings in a combination of high-yield CDs and savings accounts.

Asymmetric pay policy keeps US prone to shutdown

REUTERS/Jonathan Ernst Acquire Licensing RightsNEW YORK, Sept 29 (Reuters Breakingviews) - U.S. legislators could use more skin in the shutdown game. Lawmakers will collect their salaries during the halt, however long it lasts, but nearly 1.5 million public workers will go without wages. The average salary for a federal employee was already 24% lower than the private-sector equivalent last year, wider than 2021’s gap, according to the Federal Salary Council. The $174,000 annual salaries paid to each of the 535 U.S. legislators, meantime, will be unaffected. Their median net worth is just over $1 million, according to the nonprofit research outfit OpenSecrets, so the paychecks are important to most of them.

Tesla has failed to investigate complaints of racist conduct and has fired or otherwise retaliated against workers who reported harassment, the EEOC said in the lawsuit. The lawsuit adds federal charges to discrimination claims by the state of California and lawsuits by Tesla employees. It follows the breakdown of settlement talks with the EEOC after Tesla announced that the agency had formally raised its concerns last year. The department alleges that Tesla discriminated against Black workers when making decisions about pay, promotions and work assignments. Tesla is also facing a class action lawsuit in California state court over the alleged mistreatment of Black factory workers.

Amazon has a poor man’s monopoly

The $1.3 trillion retailer run by Andy Jassy was sued on Tuesday by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission for alleged anticompetitive practices. She rose to prominence after publishing a paper in the Yale Law Journal in 2017 titled “Amazon’s Antitrust Paradox,” which painted the e-commerce giant as a sprawling monopoly that has gone unchecked by traditional antitrust policing. But Chinese competitors like Shein and Temu, which have different cost structures, are starting to encroach on Amazon’s market. Their requests are so extreme that the measures stand no chance of passing in the Democratic-controlled Senate, which is required to avoid a shutdown. While it could be either avoidable or short-lived, a longer shuttering of the U.S. government seems inevitable. Both chambers of the U.S. legislative branch are making last-ditch efforts to dodge a shutdown before the Sunday deadline. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene said on Sunday she opposes the budget’s $300 million charge for training Ukrainian troops – that amounts to 0.02% of the total $1.5 trillion budget. Hong Kong CNN —Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo says the US government has no evidence that Huawei can produce smartphones with advanced chips “at scale,” as it continues to investigate how the sanctioned Chinese manufacturer made an apparent breakthrough with its latest flagship device. On Tuesday, Raimondo told US lawmakers that she was “upset” by news of the launch of Huawei’s Mate 60 Pro during her visit to China last month. “The only good news, if there is any, is we don’t have any evidence that they can manufacture 7-nanometer [chips] at scale,” she told a US House of Representatives hearing. That surprised many because SMIC, a partially state-owned Chinese company, has also been subject to US export restrictions for years. The following year, the US government expanded on those curbs by seeking to cut Huawei off from chip suppliers that use US technology.

Yield curve “inversions” belong to the latter group. At first sight, they are right: Yield curve inversions have been a consistent predictor of future downturns. Yield curve inversions take place when the yield on short-dated government debt climbs higher than that on longer-term bonds. Lower long-dated bond yields are seen as a sign that investors predict lower rates due to an economic downturn. As such, yield curve inversions have become a popular forward indicator of economic recessions.
