Within the federal union, the slave-dependent states had access to a national market in which they could sell the products of slave labor to merchants and manufacturers throughout the country. Entitled to representation under the supreme charter of the federal union, slave owners could accumulate political power that they could deploy to defend and extend their interests. And because the states had considerable latitude over their internal affairs, the leaders of slave-dependent states could shape their communities to their own satisfaction, especially with regard to slavery. But the federal union wasn’t perfect for slaveholders. They could, for example, declare enslaved Black people free once they entered.

Aug 24 (Reuters) - Gap Inc (GPS.N) forecast third-quarter sales below expectations and missed Wall Street estimates for quarterly sales on Thursday, hit by softness in demand as budget-strained American customers cut back their spending on accessories and apparel. The owner of Banana Republic and Athleta brands expects third-quarter net sales to decrease in the low double-digit percentage range, compared with analysts' expectations of a 6.76% decline, according to Refinitiv data. The company's net sales fell to $3.55 billion in the second quarter from $3.86 billion a year earlier. Analysts on average had estimated sales of $3.57 billion, according to Refinitiv data. WeWork logos are seen at a WeWork office in San Francisco, California, U.S. September 30, 2019. WeWork, which earlier this month warned about its ability to stay afloat, added that the company's common shares will continue to trade on the NYSE. WeWork had received a non-compliance notice from the NYSE in April, as its stock closed below $1 on average over a consecutive 30 trading-day period. In its efforts to regain listing compliance, WeWork last week had said it would proceed with a one-for-forty reverse stock split. WeWork's shares have lost almost all its value since it went public with an equity value just shy of $9 billion in 2021.

Dick's Sporting Goods plunged 25% on Tuesday after the company revealed weak second-quarter earnings. The retailer said it saw a decline in profits due to increased shrinkage, which is code for retail theft. The mention of theft hurting its business was a first for Dick's Sporting Goods, and it took analysts by surprise. AdvertisementAdvertisementDick's Sporting Goods was a darling retail stock that has seen strong performance since the COVID-19 pandemic began in March 2020. Part of the strength in Dick's Sporting Goods stock in recent years was driven by an increase in business as consumers got out of their house and more active as the pandemic subsided.

The Americans, who own a record four World Cup titles and had never before finished worse than third place, left town long before the party was over after a shock defeat to Sweden in the last 16. "Our commitment to excellence remains unshakeable, and we believe this strategic plan will set the foundation for our women's national team to achieve greater heights in the years to come." The U.S. federation must also replace women's national team General Manager Kate Margkraf, whose departure was announced on Friday. But the Macedonian-American never shied from bringing the next generation into the fold, as he fielded the least experienced U.S. team in memory with 14 World Cup newcomers, compared to only eight in 2015. But fans looking for a glimmer of hope from the Americans' dismal campaign can look to the younger players.

In particular, I continue to marvel at the performance of Margot Robbie, who played the titular heroine — Stereotypical Barbie — and who I think isn’t getting enough credit for holding the movie together. She must journey to the real world, leaving an army of other Barbies behind, to get back to a state of unquestioning bliss. She grudgingly takes Ken (a perfectly doltish Ryan Gosling) with her, and in the real world he discovers the concept of patriarchy. A movie called “Barbie,” and Barbie didn’t always feel like the main character. I also kept thinking about Robbie as Stereotypical Barbie.

WeWork had received a non-compliance notice from the New York Stock Exchange in April, as its stock closed below $1 on average over a consecutive 30 trading-day period. It had six months to regain compliance after receiving the notice. The reverse stock split, authorized by shareholders earlier, will help regain compliance with the $1.00 per share minimum closing price required for continued listing, WeWork said. The reverse stock split will be effective at market close on Sept. 1.

That's down from 13% of Nike's women's team products which sold out during the same tournament in 2019, the data shows. For that reason, marketers must bear in mind the risk that the growing fanbase could see their support for women's soccer as disingenuous. To recognize the impact grassroots teams have in creating excitement about women's soccer, Adobe's ad also featured London-based community women's soccer clubs Peaches FC and Baesianz FC, said Sabina Strasser, Senior Director, Brand Experience EMEA at Adobe. Sporting goods retailer Fanatics has more than 475 U.S. women's team products for sale this year, up from about 175 in 2019, the company told Reuters. As of Monday, the generic Adidas Women's World Cup soccer ball was among its top sellers in FIFA World Cup Gear.

The three penny stocks, up in the range of 40% to 120%, were the most actively traded U.S. shares at 10:45 a.m. Amyris (AMRS.O) and WeWork (WE.N) were the second and third most traded stocks by retail investors, respectively, while Proterra (PTRA.O) was twelfth on the list at 10 a.m. Some of the latest speculative bets on the penny stocks were pinned on hopes of a merger and acquisition or a turnaround for the struggling businesses. Another set of retail traders are looking to capitalize on the volatility, especially by squeezing bearish investors on highly shorted stocks. Last week retail traders had piled into shares of Tupperware Brands (TUP.N) and trucking firm Yellow (YELL.O).

Although the “Barbie” movie is a billion-dollar global hit, officials in Lebanon and Kuwait moved on Wednesday to ban the film, saying its content contradicts the conservative values of their countries. Unlike other movies that have been banned in the Middle East, “Barbie” does not feature any scenes that overtly portray same-sex relationships. The cast does feature L.G.B.T.Q. A Kuwaiti committee on cinematic censorship banned both “Barbie” and the horror film “Talk to Me” this week. Al-Subei’e told the news agency that foreign movies that run counter to Kuwait’s public ethics will often have scenes censored, but that movies that carry “alien concepts, message or unacceptable behavior” are fully banned.

Federal regulators have suspended research on human subjects at the Columbia-affiliated New York State Psychiatric Institute, one of the country’s oldest research centers, as they investigate safety protocols across the institute after the suicide of a research participant. The decision affected 417 studies, of which 198 have continuing participation. Of those, 124 receive federal funding. It is unusual for the U.S. regulatory office to suspend research, and this suggests that investigators are concerned that potential violations of safety protocols occurred more broadly within the institute. Almost 500 studies, with combined budgets totaling $86 million, are underway at the institute, according to its website.

CNN —Ryan Gosling may or may not be your ideal Ken in the new “Barbie” movie, but one of the film’s casting directors has shared who else might have gotten the role. In an interview with Vanity Fair, Allison Jones — who cast the hit film along with Lucy Bevan — talked about who else might have joined Barbie in her dream house. Like the line of dolls the movie is based on, there are multiple Barbies and Kens portrayed by a diverse cast of actors. And that meant Bowen Yang, Dan Levy, and Ben Platt were out of the running to play Ken. “Simu Liu was dying to be a Ken, God bless him,” Jones said of the actor who was eventually cast as one of the Kens.

It alleges that Twitter made repeated assurances to employees about its severance plan amid Musk’s takeover in an effort to retain workers. In particular, the complaint claims that Twitter had promised senior employees severance of six months of base pay plus one week for every year of service, in addition to other benefits. In response to a request for comment on the lawsuit, Twitter sent CNN an automated poop emoji. The lawsuit is just the latest legal action brought against Twitter by former employees with severance-related claims. More than 1,500 former employees have filed arbitration claims, after Twitter pushed for anyone who had signed an arbitration agreement while working at the company to pursue their claims out of court.
