JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — The U.S. Department of Justice has closed its review of the case of a drug suspect who was repeatedly punched, elbowed and kneed by police officers during a traffic stop in northeast Florida, officials said Friday. James Felte Jr., Justice Department criminal section chief, wrote in a letter to Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters that the arrest of Le’Keian Woods does not give rise to a prosecutable violation of federal civil rights laws. Mug shots taken after the arrest showed him with both eyes swollen shut and bruises and cuts on his face. Officers knew Woods had once been accused of murder, was on probation for armed robbery and had been connected to firearms and drug trafficking when they gave chase after a traffic stop, Waters said.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Kenny Pickett threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to Diontae Johnson with 4:02 remaining and the Pittsburgh Steelers slipped past the Tennessee Titans 20-16 on Thursday. Tennessee rookie quarterback Will Levis played well in his second NFL start but couldn't match the electricity of his first, a four-touchdown masterpiece against Atlanta. The Titans said Burks had full movement in all his extremities, it was reported on the Amazon TV broadcast. The Titans responded to take a 13-10 halftime lead behind some poised play by Levis and Derrick Henry's unique brand of fury. Inside linebacker Cole Holcomb was carted off in the first quarter with what appeared to be a serious left knee injury.

The arrest of Florida resident Le’Keian Woods on Sept. 29 has sparked online narratives regarding his treatment at the hands of officers of the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. Bystander footage of the arrest first circulated online with some users saying Woods, who is Black, suffered a disproportionately brutal arrest by white officers for a seatbelt violation, while others suggested the arrest was warranted because drugs were found in the vehicle with Woods. A graphic mugshot released by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) shows Woods with swollen eyes as well as a bloody, bruised face. JSO had no comment on Oct. 26 when asked whether the detectives involved in the arrest were still working. watch nowToday's housing market is a toxic mix of high mortgage rates, high prices, tight supply and strangely strong pent-up demand — and it's scaring off buyers and sellers alike. Now the popular 30-year fixed mortgage rate is at 8%, the highest in decades, making things even tougher. The result was record-low mortgage rates for two solid years. That, ironically, made the housing market even more expensive. They have little desire to trade the 3% rate they currently have for an 8% mortgage rate on a new purchase.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Justice Department has secured a $9 million settlement with Ameris Bank over allegations that it avoided underwriting mortgages in predominately Black and Latino communities in Jacksonville, Florida, and discouraged people there from getting home loans. Garland has prioritized civil rights prosecutions since becoming attorney general in 2021, and the current administration has put a higher priority on redlining cases than before. The anti-redlining effort has now secured $107 million in relief, including the Ameris settlement, which a judge must approve. A $31 million settlement with Los Angeles-based City National in January was the largest for the department. The Ameris case is the first brought by the department in Florida, said Roger Handberg, the U.S. attorney for the Middle District of Florida.

(AP) — CSX reported a 24% drop in the railroad's third-quarter profit Thursday as it hauled 2% less freight, but the CEO said customers are noticing that its trains are running more smoothly. The Jacksonville, Florida-based railroad said it earned $846 million, or 42 cents per share, in the quarter. Hinrichs said customers are noticing that the railroad's service has been consistently better over the past year, and that is opening the door to more conversations about increasing the amount they ship on the railroad. Three CSX employees have died on the job since June, prompting unions to call for better training and a review of the use of remote-control locomotives. CSX is one of the nation’s largest railroads, operating trains on more than 20,000 miles (32,000 kilometers) of track in 23 Eastern states and two Canadian provinces.
