The musician Florence Welch, photographed in London on July 5, 2024. When I rang the Camberwell, South London, doorbell of Florence Welch, I held a tribute: “The Penguin Book of Spiritual Verse” (2022), edited by Kaveh Akbar. Exacerbating the mixed craving for and fear of having a baby and what it would mean for her art, Welch feels the intense pressure of aging as a female performer. In the latter part of the song, Welch raises her voice in a long howl of rage. Trump's lawyers argued in a court filing that evidence is being used in Kamala Harris ads. Trump's attorneys asked a judge to hold off on the release of documents until after the election. "Nothing done wrong at all," Trump said in a lengthy response after a Republican voter from Florida said he had lost his vote because of his responses to the riot and the Covid pandemic. The voter also questioned why he should support Trump when so many people who held high positions in his administration, including former Vice President Mike Pence, weren't backing him this year. "The vice president, I disagree with him on what he did. Trump has pleaded not guilty to the charges against him in Washington and in another election interference case in Georgia. At the town hall, Trump also called Jan. 6, when rioters who delayed the electoral vote count for hours injured over 140 police officers, as "a day of love."

Trump's team had asked Chutkan to compel prosecutors in special counsel Jack Smith's office to provide them with additional evidence, including "all information" about foreign interference and influence efforts in the 2020 election. It's part of the Trump team's attempt to present Trump's concerns about mass voter fraud — which were roundly rejected by independent arbiters and courts — as "reasonable" and grounded in reality. Judge Tanya Chutkan pushed back on Trump's claims on Wednesday in an order that rejected all but three of his 14 categories of requests for additional evidence. Trump's state of mind is essential to the case, and Smith's team has alleged that Trump "knew" his election lies "were false." The Supreme Court gutted part of Smith's case over the summer with its ruling on presidential immunity, but the case against Trump is — very slowly — churning towards a potential trial.

WASHINGTON — A team of federal prosecutors led by special counsel Jack Smith said in a filing Wednesday that Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump bears responsibility for the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. In a filing responding to Trump's attempt to dismiss the case, Smith's team said it "is incorrect" for Trump's team to assert that the superseding indictment returned against Trump in August does not show that Trump bears responsibility for the events of Jan. 6. "Those allegations link the defendant’s actions on January 6 directly to his efforts to corruptly obstruct the certification proceeding," Smith's team wrote. Special counsel Jack Smith delivers remarks on an unsealed indictment against Trump on June 9, 2023. The latest filing comes after the Supreme Court's decision on presidential immunity gutted part of Smith's case against Trump.

CNN —Researchers have discovered a distant disc galaxy that has surprisingly similar characteristics to our own Milky Way, and it could change our understanding of how galaxies form. Early galaxies tend to join together and develop smoother shapes incredibly slowly, with our Milky Way taking billions of years to develop tidy structures, the researchers said. The rotation and structure of the galaxy were observed using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) telescope in northern Chile. “Finding further evidence of more evolved structures would be an exciting discovery, as it would be the most distant galaxy with such structures observed to date,” Rowland said. “ALMA also reveals details finer than earlier telescopes.”Blain said more research is needed before scientists change their understanding of galaxy formation.

CNN —Special counsel Jack Smith told a federal judge on Wednesday that the Supreme Court’s decision limiting some obstruction charges against those who stormed the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, should not apply to Donald Trump in the election subversion case against the former president. One primary reason the obstruction charge against Trump should stand, prosecutors argue, is that – unlike in the case involving a rioter that was before the Supreme Court – Trump is directly accused of creating false evidence though the plot to insert fake electors in the certification process. Trump is arguing the ruling should result in Judge Tanya Chutkan throwing out the case against him. “The defendant’s supplement ignores entirely that the superseding indictment includes allegations that involve the creation of false evidence,” prosecutors wrote Wednesday, namely, “the fraudulent electoral certificates.”Smith also urged the judge to ignore Trump’s claims of presidential immunity, calling them “deeply flawed” and “irrelevant” to the issue at hand and should wait to be argued in separate filings. Trump has been charged with multiple counts related to his alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election results, including conspiracy to defraud the United States and obstruction.

CNN —Six people have been arrested as part of an investigation into a wine fraud ring that allegedly sold fake French wine for up to €15,000 ($16,300) per bottle. Police in Italy searched 14 properties and seized large amounts of wine, wine bottles, counterfeit stickers from top French vineyards and machines used to recap bottles, according to a statement from European law enforcement agency Europol, published Tuesday. “The surge in demand for fine wine in the 21st century… has motivated fraudsters,” George told CNN. “Better training and better knowledge of what bottles of fine wine – and especially old bottles of fine wine – really look like would be useful,” said George. Bolgheri Sassicaia red wine comes from an area on the coast of Tuscany and has become one of Italy’s best-known fine wines since it appeared on the market in the 1970s.

Headline price rises in the euro area cooled to 1.8% in September, below the central bank's 2% target. Bank of France Governor Francois Villeroy de Galhau last week described an October rate cut as "very likely" and said such a step "won't be the last." This led him to forecast ECB rate cuts will take place both this week and at each of the central bank's forthcoming meetings, until the deposit rate hits 2.5%.

Former President Donald Trump’s campaign also faced renewed focus on his legal troubles in the wake of a new filing by federal prosecutors, the survey finds. In the wake of Hurricane Helene, which has killed more than 230 people across the southeastern United States, “hurricane” was the word most frequently mentioned when respondents were asked what they’d heard about Trump. CNN —Former President Donald Trump suggested using the military to handle what he called “the enemy from within” on Election Day, saying that he isn’t worried about chaos from his supporters or foreign actors, but instead from “radical left lunatics.”“I think the bigger problem are the people from within. “No, I don’t think — not from the side that votes for Trump,” the former president said when Bartiromo asked whether he was expecting chaos on Election Day. Trump has also been laying groundwork to question the integrity of the 2024 election. He’s threatened, if he wins the White House again, prosecution and “long-term prison sentences” for election officials and political operatives, who he suggested could cheat. Attorneys for Donald Trump on Thursday argued against the release of additional evidence in the former president's federal election interference case in the lead up to Election Day. A spokesperson for the special counsel’s office declined to comment on the filing. Prosecutors from Smith's office had previously rebuffed assertions from Trump's attorneys that the government was "motivated by improper political considerations." The federal election case was upended after the Supreme Court’s immunity ruling which found that Trump has some protection from prosecution related to official acts. A judge overseeing that case last month granted the former president's request to further postpone his sentencing hearing until after Election Day.
