CNN —Parents, teachers, coaches and other adults shouting at, denigrating or verbally threatening children can be as damaging to their development as sexual or physical abuse, a new study finds. The study, published in the journal Child Abuse & Neglect, reviewed 166 earlier studies to produce a detailed analysis of the existing literature on the topic. The authors called for childhood verbal abuse to be ascribed its own category of maltreatment to facilitate prevention. Child maltreatment is currently classified into four categories — physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, of which verbal abuse is a part, and neglect — and this study can inform strategies for prevention and treatment. Researchers also called for a “need for consistency” in defining childhood verbal abuse so that its “prevalence and impact can be appropriately measured, and interventions developed.

CNN —French grandmaster Maxime Vachier-Lagrave defeated world No. 1 Magnus Carlsen in two matches as he won the 2023 AI Cup and qualified for the upcoming Champions Chess Tour Finals. By winning the first match, Vachier-Lagrave forced a Grand Final “Reset” and he took victory in both games of the second match too. Carlsen went for a queen sacrifice in the first game of the second match but his gamble ultimately failed as Vachier-Lagrave took victory. In the second game of the second match, however, it seemed as if Carlsen was regaining his form and salvaging his position before Vachier-Lagrave went for a bishop sacrifice that turned the game on its head.

CNN —New analysis has identified the oldest shoes ever discovered in Europe, according to a study published this week in the journal Science Advances. The ancient footwear, along with Mesolithic baskets and other tools, was first discovered back in 1857, when a cave in southern Spain was looted by miners. The sandals were made of grasses as well as other materials, including leather, lime and ramie bast, a type of natural fiber. Using the descriptions provided by Góngora, the study hypothesizes that the bodies were buried wearing the sandals. The first phase was related to the Early Holocene hunter-gatherer populations, and the second phase to Middle Holocene farmers, researchers said.

CNN —Ethiopia’s Tigist Assefa obliterated the women’s marathon world record on Sunday as she won the Berlin Marathon, completing the course in 2:11:53 and shaving more than two minutes off the previous best. It was a blistering race from the very start with the leading 12 women all running within world record pace through the opening 15 kilometers. By the halfway point, Assefa was more than a minute inside world record pace and alone at the head of the race, streaking ahead of the field. Eliud Kipchoge won his fifth Berlin Marathon title. The speed of this year’s Berlin Marathon was underscored by a record nine men finishing inside 2:05 and a record eight women finishing inside 2:20.
