It could also mean taking a few minutes to click around the deductions page on your tax software to make sure you're not leaving money on the table. Here are three tax moves that experts say people tend to overlook. If you didn't hit your maximum contribution for 2023, you can retroactively direct funds to those accounts for the 2023 tax year. If you have children or other dependents, for instance, your tax prep software will likely guide you to the Child Tax Credit and the Child and Dependent Care Credit. "You're not going to enter something in wrong and the program's not going to give you the Child Tax Credit.

New York CNN —If you haven’t sent in your 2023 income tax return yet, you have until April 15 to do so. But keep in mind, that extension only gives you more time to file your federal income tax return. The IRS has already received more than 80 million income tax returns for 2023, according to its most recent figures released Friday. Besides a refund, the IRS further notes low- and moderate-income earners also may be eligible to receive the Earned Income Tax Credit. And if you do file and are owed a refund, it may be withheld if you have yet to file your 2021 or 2022 returns.

"The goal is usually to be as close to zero as possible: either a minimal return refund or a minimal tax payment. Where to save your money right now: high-yield or money market accountsOnce you've received your refund, a good initial step is to send that money from your checking account to a savings account. A few key differences: Your cash will be more accessible in a money market account, as you can write checks and use a debit card linked directly to the account. Note that money market accounts usually have a higher minimum balance requirement, ranging from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars. Interest rates are expected to drop in 2024, but you'll still earn more in these accounts than in traditional savings accounts, which typically offer rates under 0.5%.

"China's overcapacity distorts global prices and production patterns and hurts American firms and workers, as well as firms and workers around the world." China has a surplus of solar power, electric vehicles and lithium-ion batteries that it can ship out to other countries at cheaper prices. Yellen said she intends to put pressure on Chinese officials about these trade practices during her upcoming visit to China. Meanwhile, China has been pouring billions into clean energy for years, outpacing the rest of the world in the energy transition. Yellen added that the more China's clean energy glut interferes with global market prices, the worse off supply chains for these energy sectors will be.

Vehicles set to be shipped to Europe, at Taicang Port on Dec. 19, 2022, in Suzhou, China. China has initiated dispute settlement proceedings against the United States at the World Trade Organization to safeguard its interests in the electric vehicle industry, the Chinese mission said on Tuesday and the WTO confirmed. China said it was contesting "discriminatory subsidies" under the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) that it said resulted in the exclusion of goods from China and other WTO countries. The wide-ranging law provides billions of dollars in tax credits to help consumers buy electric vehicles and companies produce renewable energy, as President Joe Biden aims to decarbonise the mighty U.S. power sector. It said it was launching the proceedings "to safeguard the legitimate interests of Chinese electric vehicle industry and to maintain a fair level playing field of competition for the global market".

10'000 Hours | Digitalvision | Getty ImagesThere's still time to lower your 2023 tax bill or boost your refund with a lesser-known retirement savings strategy for married couples. One requirement for individual retirement account contributions is "earned income," such as wages or salary from a job or self-employment earnings. But there's an exception for single-income households: the spousal IRA. With income phaseouts for IRA deductibility and Roth IRA contributions, many wait until March or April for the previous year's IRA deposits. Even a $500 or $1,000 spousal IRA contribution could provide tax savings.

President Joe Biden speaks at the United Auto Workers political convention at the Marriott Marquis in Washington, D.C., Jan. 24, 2024. The new Environmental Protection Agency rules released Wednesday aim to cut tailpipe emissions by 49% between model years 2027 and 2032. The EPA set a target for EVs to make up at least 35% of new vehicle sales by 2032. The EPA's new strategy for cutting tailpipe emissions doesn't focus only on EVs. The EPA's percentage targets for EV adoption are not mandates but expectations for how automakers could meet the emissions regulations.

The rate of "gray divorce" — a term that describes divorce at age 50 and older — doubled from 1990 to 2019, according to a 2022 study published in The Journals of Gerontology. The 'chronic economic strain' of gray divorceIn heterosexual relationships, gray divorce typically "has more negative implications for women than for men," said Kamila Elliott, a certified financial planner and co-founder of Collective Wealth Partners, based in Atlanta. Altogether, women's standard of living declined by 45% following a gray divorce, while the drop for men was less severe, at 21%, Brown and Lin wrote. These negative economic outcomes persisted over time, "indicating that gray divorce operates as a chronic economic strain," they said. For example, let's say a husband is eligible for a larger Social Security benefit relative to his female spouse.

Provisions of the TCJA — a landmark tax law proposed by the Trump administration and passed by Congress in 2017 — that are set to expire in 2025 include the child tax credit. An additional "other dependent credit" offers a tax credit of $500 to people with less than $400,000 in income who have qualified dependents who are ineligible for the child tax credit. Biden's budget will restore the expanded child tax credit, the White House has said. "Would you agree that if the TCJA child tax credit provisions are not extended, this would also result in a tax hike for Americans making under $400,000?" The budget would impose a minimum 25% tax rate on the unrealized income of the very wealthiest households and raise the IRA's corporate alternative minimum tax for billion-dollar companies from 15% to 21%, while increasing the larger corporate tax rate to 28%.

President Joe Biden is giving automakers more time to ramp up sales of electric vehicles, following pressure from the industry and labor unions concerned about a rapid transition to EVs. Cars are the single-largest source of greenhouse gas emissions. Still, the United Auto Workers worries that a rapid shift to EVs will cost jobs because EV manufacturing requires fewer assembly parts. Pacing EV adoptionThe tailpipe rules land as the EV market hits some bumps in the road. Investing without owningLike real-estate investment trusts (REITs), real-estate funds provide exposure to the tangible asset class without owning and managing property. Investing directly through a private real-estate fund would take a few extra steps. The process requires an investor to identify a real-estate fund of interest. Once that's completed, funds from the retirement account are directly transferred into the real-estate fund. It's also important to read the terms of each fund; some may have added costs for repairs, expenses, and maintenance, which your IRA funds would cover.

The most dismal assessment, though, is that of Canadian journalist Stephen Marche who, in his 2022 book, The Next Civil War: Dispatches form the American Future, contends that a new American civil war is inevitable. Remember that the United States leads the world — by far — in the number of firearms in private hands. There are an estimated 393 million privately held firearms in the United States — more than one gun per person. In fact, there are more civilian-held guns in the United States than the other top 25 countries in the world combined. Indeed, more guns were purchased in the United States in 2020 — nearly 23 million — than any other year on record.

By hiring an accountant, we'll be able to get the most out of tax season and save for retirement. Short-term capital gains are profits you've made on stock that you've held for one year or less. Long-term capital gains are gains on investments you've held for longer than a year and range from 0% to 20%. What tax rate you'll pay on these gains depends on your taxable income, or what tax bracket you fall into. Little-known tax moves like this are another reason hiring an accountant is worth every penny.
