Economic bellwether FedEx (FDX) stunned Wall Street last week with a massive earnings warning and tepid outlook for the global economy. Still, investors remain nervous about the health of the railroad business, a sign of the jitters about the overall economy. Most of Corporate America operates on a calendar year schedule for earnings, which means they will report third quarter results in October. That would be the worst quarter for earnings since a 5.7% decrease in the third quarter of 2020, when the economy was reeling from Covid-imposed lockdowns. That adds to the risk that a global spike in rates will lead to a further slowdown in earnings, consumer spending and the overall economy.

☆ Rail Shippers Brace for Potential National Strike

Companies from food suppliers in the Midwest to retail importers across the U.S. are bracing for a potential national rail strike by seeking alternative transport to keep their supply chains running. Tens of thousands of American workers are on strike and thousands more are attempting to unionize. “We believe the potential for a rail work stoppage is growing,” Citi’s Christian Wetherbee wrote in a research note Wednesday. Other shippers will have to hold on to cargo if the rail network shuts down. U.S. railroads hauled more than 18,000 carloads of grains over the past week, according to the Association of American Railroads.

☆ Housing might be struggling in China but there are green shoots in commercial property

Commercial property is a bright spot in Chinese real estate, in contrast with the doom and gloom of the residential housing market. Likewise, property group CIFI Holdings posted a 23% year-on-year drop in home sales in China for the first half, but reported a 69.5% lift in its property investment revenue. While some investors sold assets to stay liquid, Spiro said the commercial sector generally has more supportive government and fiscal policies. All in all, the Chinese commercial property sector's resilience lies in its ability to rebound faster than its residential counterpart. Down but not outBut unlike housing, the commercial sector is rebounding particularly after lockdowns ended and government incentives kicked in, CBRE said.

Among the most important are quarterly and annual reports, which under U.S. securities law are known as Form 10-Q and Form 10-K, respectively. Annual reports, in particular, are the best places to begin homework into a company you may invest in. It's important to scrutinize a few years' worth of annual reports, too.
