The 22-year-old former soldier, discharged from the army in July, hopes his journey can help increase civil defence awareness and unite the people of Taiwan amid tensions with China. China, which claims Taiwan as its own territory, has stepped up military activity to try to force democratically governed Taiwan to accept Beijing's sovereignty, despite strong objections from the government in Taipei. The six-nation parliament, known as Parlacen, met in the Nicaraguan capital Managua where local legislators proposed adding China, which claims democratically ruled Taiwan as its own territory. Beijing has expanded its influence in Central America with Parlacen members Nicaragua, El Salvador, Honduras, Panama and the Dominican Republic breaking off diplomatic ties with Taiwan in recent years. Guatemala, the most populous country in Central America, is the only Parlacen member that still recognizes Taiwan. When asked at a press conference about Chinese military activity in response to Lai's trip, defence ministry spokesperson Sun Li-fang, said it was the responsibility of the armed forces to track any Chinese activities near Taiwan. However, Taiwan had not seen any "relatively large-scale" drills or actions by China's military, he said. Beijing has launched almost daily military incursions into Taiwan's air defence zone in recent years seeking to pressure Taipei to accept Chinese sovereignty. Both Taiwan and the United States are aiming for Lai's U.S. stop-overs to be as low-key as possible, saying that such transits are routine.

TAIPEI, Aug 15 (Reuters) - The leading candidate to be Taiwan's new president, Vice President William Lai, said in an interview on Tuesday that he has no plans to change the island's formal name, but reiterated that Taiwan is "not subordinate" to China. It is not part of the People's Republic of China," he said in an interview with the Bloomberg news agency. "The current name, according to our constitution, is the Republic of China," Lai said, according to a transcript published by his campaign team. "And in respect to unifying Taiwanese society, President Tsai has used the term Republic of China (Taiwan) to describe our country. President Tsai Ing-wen cannot run again after serving two terms in office.

Over $22 billion worth of Nvidia's shares were traded as of mid-day, beating out $14 billion of trades in Tesla (TSLA.O), which is usually the Wall Street's most traded stock. Nvidia shares rose as much as 3.5% before trimming gains. Analysts on average expect Nvidia to report a 66% surge in quarterly revenue to $11.13 billion, according to Refinitiv. That compares to Nvidia's forecast for quarterly revenue of $11 billion, plus or minus 2%.
