Apple's upcoming WWDC on June 10 represents its "most important event in a decade," according to Wedbush analyst Dan Ives. Ives expects the company to unveil a host of AI features that will help power an iPhone 16 supercycle. Ives expects the iPhone upgrade cycle could exceed a massive 270 million units. "This adds to our entrenched view that for Apple iPhone builds we will see a lift heading into a highly anticipated iPhone 16 upgrade cycle that kicks off in September. We believe current Street numbers are somewhat conservative for FY25 which is a good setup into this upcoming iPhone cycle," Ives said.

That's made Apple's lack of a big generative AI announcement so far particularly noticeable. However, one big sign an announcement may be coming at WWDC was the unveiling of its M4 chip, which Apple described as an "outrageously powerful chip for AI." The CEO spoke of "big opportunities across our products" for generative AI and promised that Apple is "well positioned" to take on the space. "We think investors will take any generative AI announcement positively," Morningstar tech analyst William Kerwin said. We'd expect any new-gen AI announcement to see strong adoption when released."

The movement of parents concerned by their kids' smartphone use just gained an unlikely disciple: socialite and DJ Paris Hilton. Hilton isn't alone in thinking smartphones can cause damage to young kids. "The biggest effects of social media happened during puberty, especially early puberty," he says. No social media before age 16. "There's no clear evidence that giving children access to social media early is better able to prepare them for adulthood later on," Rausch says.

Amazon is upgrading its decade-old Alexa voice assistant with generative artificial intelligence and plans to charge a monthly subscription fee to offset the cost of the technology, according to people with knowledge of Amazon's plans. Amazon's subscription for Alexa will not be included in the $139 per year Prime offering, and Amazon has not yet nailed down the price point, one source said. The Alexa team worried they had invented an expensive alarm clock, weather machine and way to play Spotify music, one source said. When reached for comment, Amazon pointed to the company's annual shareholder letter released last month. It has undergone a massive reorganization, with much of the team shifting to the artificial general intelligence, or AGI, team, according to three sources.

CNN —Passengers on a Singapore Airlines flight hit by severe turbulence on Tuesday described a sudden, dramatic drop as “all hell broke loose” on board the Boeing airliner carrying 229 passengers and crew. Flight SQ321 was cruising at 37,000 feet from London to Singapore when flight tracking data shows the plane rapidly plunged before climbing several hundred feet, then repeated the dip and ascent, for about 90 seconds. At first, “the flight was perfectly normal,” said passenger Andrew Davies, who was traveling to New Zealand for business. He described the flight as “quite smooth … I don’t remember any turbulence at all.”Many passengers were having breakfast at the time of the incident. But after a decade of doing that, iPhone sales are slowing, revenue is down, and the company, again, needs to find its next big thing. Apple's own outlook suggests poor iPhone sales will persist, especially as sales in China rapidly decline. The drawbacks of Cook's divestment from product design and development are now becoming clearer. Both the EU and the US cases would also make some people more likely to switch to a cheaper phone, which would threaten iPhone sales even further. Hong Kong CNN —For decades, Western companies made a fortune betting on the inexorable rise of the Chinese consumer. Now an economic slump and the emergence of ferocious local competitors means those bets look less safe as price wars erupt. Tesla’s China market share shrank to 4% in April, almost halving from 7.7% in March, according to data released by the China Passenger Car Association on Friday. In the 1990s, “every company in the West” was hiring consultants and having boardroom meetings about how to do more in China, according to Stevenson-Yang. IPhone and Android devices with up-to-date software will receive a message telling them that a Bluetooth tracker is "found moving with you." Users can then have the tracker play a sound to make it easier to find, and access instructions about how to disable it. Since then, Apple has been working with Google to integrate alerts and warnings into iOS and Android to tamp down criminal misuse. The AirTag is also now just one of many Bluetooth trackers. Zach Rausch, lead researcher to Haidt and an associate research scientist at NYU-Stern School of Business, says kids who had access to social media and iPhones in elementary and middle school report higher levels of anxiety and depression. "The biggest effects of social media happened during puberty, especially early puberty," he says. To curb bullying, social comparison, and depression in adolescents, Haidt and Rausch crafted four suggestions:No smartphones for kids before high school — give them only flip phones in middle school. No social media before age 16. If you want to make a change today that will positively impact your child's health, Rausch says start by talking to your kids' friends' parents.
