The biggest surprise of “Gladiator II” is not that Denzel Washington is great. Instead, it’s how pivotal his character Macrinus is to the long-awaited sequel starring Paul Mescal as the heir of Russell Crowe’s iconic character Maximus. But it’s Washington’s Macrinus who moves “Gladiator II” forward. “His grand purpose,” Washington told NBC News, “is to take over the world.”Denzel Washington plays Macrinus, Pedro Pascal plays Gen. Acacius and Connie Nielsen plays Lucilla in “Gladiator II.” Aidan Monaghan / Paramount PicturesTo select his gladiators, Macrinus leans into their rage. “Almost everything that is done in the film, I’ve done before: fight scenes, swords, riding horses,” he said, noting one exception.

LAS VEGAS — Max Verstappen is hoping that what happens in Vegas won't just stay in Vegas — it will go down in the history books. Verstappen, 27, of the Netherlands, can secure the trophy by finishing the 50-lap race ahead of his sole championship rival, Lando Norris. Norris needs to outscore Verstappen by at least 3 points to keep his title hopes alive, although they would be slim regardless. No other driver is mathematically in contention for the championship with three races left in the season. McLaren hopes to secure its first constructors championship since 1998, when Finnish driver Mika Häkkinen won the drivers championship with the now papaya-colored team.

Tech billionaire Elon Musk, the owner of social media platform X, criticized proposed legislation in Australia that aims to ban social media for children under 16. The legislation, which was introduced in Parliament by Australia’s center-left government on Thursday, is among the world’s toughest on social media. Other countries have tried to impose limits on social media for children, including the United States which requires technology companies to obtain parental consent to collect data from children under 13. This is not the first time Musk has been publicly critical of the Australian government over tech regulation. At the time, Albanese called Musk an “arrogant billionaire who thinks he is above the law.”In September, Musk called the Australian government “fascists” over plans to crack down on misinformation online.

Skulls found on a New Mexico property earlier this month were obtained online and are not related to the case of a woman who went missing in 2019, the Lea County Sheriff’s Office said Thursday. Human remains were found after a search of a property associated with the man in Jal, a city of around 2,000 in the southeastern part of the state, the sheriff's office said last week. The medical examiner determined the remains found on the property had "no medical or legal significance," the sheriff's office said. On Nov. 12, shortly after the discovery of the remains, the sheriff's office said it could be related to Angela McManes, who disappeared in 2019. Two days later, the sheriff's office said there did not appear to be a link between the skulls and McManes beyond the proximity of her home to the property where the skulls were found.

The first emperor penguin found in Australia has been released after spending 20 days in the care of a wildlife expert, the Australian government said Friday. The bird, nicknamed Gus by its caretaker, was released from a vessel off the southern coast of Western Australia on Wednesday morning, according to the state’s Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions. The team initially weighed the penguin at about 50 pounds, only around half the weight of a healthy male. “Good luck, Gus,” Biddulph shouted with a smile after the penguin dived into the water and swam away from the vessel. Don’t stop for anyone.”It remains unknown how the bird ended up arriving in Australia from its icy Antarctic home.

A resident walks at the site of a Russian missile strike in Dnipro, Ukraine, November 21. Mykola Synelnykov/ReutersRussia’s use of a nuclear-capable ballistic missile on Thursday is the latest escalation in the Ukraine war. The use of what Vladimir Putin said was a ballistic missile with multiple warheads in offensive combat is a clear departure from decades of the Cold War doctrine of deterrence. Ballistic missiles with multiple warheads, known as “multiple independently targeted reentry vehicles,” or MIRVs, have never been used to strike on an enemy, experts say. Ballistic missiles have been the underpinning of deterrence, offering what is known as “mutual assured destruction,” or MAD, in the nuclear age.

Senate Republicans offered mixed responses Thursday to President-elect Donald Trump's announcement that he will nominate Pete Hegseth, a Fox News personality accused of sexual assault, to lead the Defense Department following the release of a police report concerning sexual assault allegations against him. Some senators defended Trump's pick, while others voiced some trepidation, and a senator told NBC News "I don't care" when approached about a police report released Wednesday tied to an allegation of sexual assault against Hegseth in 2017. Sen. Markwayne Mullin, R-Okla., also defended Trump's pick, saying he had reviewed the report and would push for Hegseth's confirmation. Two other picks to serve in top jobs in Trump's Cabinet have also faced potentially damaging allegations of sexual misconduct. After Gaetz withdrew his name, Sen. Chris Coons, D-Del., told NBC News that there were “similar, challenging allegations” with Hegseth.

British police said on Friday that a suspicious package left outside the U.S. embassy in London, which was blown up in a controlled explosion, was a hoax device, according to its initial indications. Police had earlier carried out a controlled explosion near the embassy building, a 12-storey purpose-built glass cube in Nine Elms, south London, and cordoned off some areas. "Initial indications are that the item was a hoax device," London's Metropolitan Police said. The embassy said it was back to normal business operations but that all public appointments for Friday had been cancelled.

The presidential election was two weeks ago, and the country’s liberals are already deep into the blame phase. Before those premature post-mortems get fully baked into conventional wisdom, though, I wanted to flag a handful of observations about the race and how it’s already being interpreted — some caveats, some counterpoints, some context that may help us understand the meaning of a big messy election in a big messy country, at least until we get the actually-reliable voter data. In the end, it seems, Donald Trump’s margin in the national popular vote will be about 1.6 percentage points — the narrowest victory since razor-thin 2000. The election did mark a decisive shift: a broad, uniform move to the right, down to the county level, that carried a Republican to a popular vote win for the first time in 20 years. But this was not a wipeout even like the one in 2008 (let alone 1932, 1972 or 1984).

The number of deaths caused by alcohol-related diseases more than doubled among Americans between 1999 and 2020, according to new research. Alcohol was involved in nearly 50,000 deaths among adults ages 25 to 85 in 2020, up from just under 20,000 in 1999. The biggest spike was observed among adults ages 25 to 34, whose fatality rate increased nearly fourfold between 1999 and 2020. Women are still far less likely than men to die of an illness caused by alcohol, but they also experienced a steep surge, with rates rising 2.5-fold over 20 years. The new study, published in The American Journal of Medicine, drew on data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Morris, like thousands of other customers, was snared in the collapse of a behind-the-scenes fintech firm called Synapse and has been locked out of her account for six months as of November. Then she learned how much Evolve Bank & Trust, the lender where her funds were supposed to be held, was prepared to return to her. The crisis started in May when a dispute between Synapse and Evolve Bank over customer balances boiled over and the fintech middleman turned off access to a key system used to process transactions. Synapse helped fintech startups like Yotta and Juno, which are not banks, offer checking accounts and debit cards by hooking them up with small lenders like Evolve. But that would've required more coordination between Evolve and the other lenders that held customer funds than what ultimately happened.
