Cognitive decline, dementia common after stroke
  + stars: | 2023-05-01 | by ( Sandee Lamotte | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +6 min
About 40% of the survivors of stroke have mild cognitive impairment that does not meet the diagnostic criteria for dementia. Cognitive impairment is most common within the first two weeks after a stroke, the statement said. The American Stroke Association’s statement did offer some good news: About 20% of people who experience mild cognitive impairment after a stroke fully recover their cognitive function, typically within the first six months. Stroke risk factors, such as hypertension, high cholesterol and type 2 diabetes, should be treated, as should atrial fibrillation. “Perhaps the most pressing need, however, is the development of effective and culturally relevant treatments for post-stroke cognitive impairment,” she said.
Washington CNN —Measures that would have severely restricted abortion failed Thursday in Nebraska and South Carolina, which both have Republican-controlled legislatures, a reflection of the growing unease among Republicans over the political popularity of strict bans. Riepe, a cosigner to the bill, had proposed an amendment to move the ban to 12 weeks instead of six weeks, but his amendment did not receive a vote Thursday. On Thursday afternoon, the South Carolina state Senate failed to pass the “Human Life Protection Act,” which would have banned abortions in the state, in a 22-21 vote with five women voting against it – including three Republicans. The bill previously passed in the state House and included exceptions for incidents of rape or incest. In the wake of last year’s Supreme Court ruling overturning Roe v. Wade, many Republican-led states have enacted sweeping abortion restrictions.
Opinion | What Should Kamala Harris’s Role Be Now?

To the Editor:Re “Kamala Harris Really Matters in 2024,” by Thomas L. Friedman (column, April 26):Mr. Friedman identifies the heightened peril of this moment and states that President Biden “absolutely has to win.” Having declared his candidacy for a second term, Mr. Biden needs to address age-related questions head on. Thus far, Vice President Kamala Harris hasn’t forged her own identity. By the very nature of the job, she is confined to a supporting role, but she needs breakout moments of not being a tightly programmed V.P. Barbara Allen KenneyPaso Robles, Calif. To the Editor:Thomas L. Friedman is way off base in suggesting that Kamala Harris may be saved by giving her a variety of portfolios. She simply lacks the foreign policy and defense chops to justify putting her a heartbeat away from the presidency, especially when the president, if re-elected, would be well into his 80s as his second term progresses.
Analyst Larry Biegelsen upgraded the medical device maker to overweight from equal weight in a Sunday note, saying that shares should benefit from improving medtech trends and a "maturing" product pipeline. "We rate MDT Overweight as we believe that the company will benefit as underlying medtech markets improve as staffing shortages ease in major markets," he said. Within the company's product pipeline, Biegelsen sees the biggest potential upside from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's approval of its upgraded insulin pump known as 780G. According to Biegelsen, Medtronic's valuation also looks attractive, trading at a sharp discount to peers. "We believe once MDT moves past its FY2024 guidance in May, the stock can re-rate on the overall medtech recovery and product pipeline," he wrote.
Mr. King has joined a lawsuit seeking to strike down the new restraints on ballot initiatives in Arkansas. The chief sponsor of the measure, State Representative Mike Henderson, did not respond to phone and email requests for comment. Legislatures began accelerating bans and other restrictions on abortion beginning a decade ago, after Republicans took control of more statehouses. It was among the first states to attempt a so-called heartbeat law, banning abortion after roughly six weeks of pregnancy, when many women do not realize they are pregnant. (That law passed in 2019 and went into effect after Roe was overturned but has been temporarily blocked by a state court.)

ReutersThe opioid overdose reversal drug Narcan, also known as naloxone, will not reverse the impact of xylazine, since the drug is not an opioid, according to the DEA. Republicans Can Reset the Abortion Debate

Journal Editorial Report: The Senator’s optimistic conservatism may stand out in the 2024 Republican presidential primaries. That’s the question the pro-life movement needs to answer, and fast. Abortion policy is receiving renewed attention after this month’s election in Wisconsin in which a left-wing judge won by 11 points after campaigning relentlessly on abortion for a seat on the state’s Supreme Court, which has a pending lawsuit over the state’s pro-life law. Ron DeSantis signed a fetal heartbeat bill last week that protects unborn babies at six weeks’ gestation. His action suggests that Republicans can win on abortion if they define the terms of the debate.

Schools with the highest rates of teens using prescribed ADHD medications were about 36% more likely to have students misusing prescription stimulants during the past year, the study found. Schools with more White students and those who had medium levels of student binge drinking were also more likely to see teen abuse of stimulants. “But these findings were not being driven solely by teens with ADHD misusing their medications,” McCabe said. Research has also shown people who misuse ADHD medications are highly likely to have multiple substance use disorders. “Parents can make sure the schools their kids attend have safe storage for medication and strict dispensing policies.
Ron DeSantis signed a new law banning abortion after 6 weeks of pregnancy. He signed with almost no fanfare, especially compared to the crowd for his 15-week ban in 2022. Ron DeSantis enacted a 15-week abortion ban for people who are pregnant in April 2022, it was to much fanfare, with the governor surrounded by supporters and television crews. The 15-week abortion ban is still heading before the Florida Supreme Court, and if it's struck down, the six-week ban won't go into effect either. Seeing the recent backlash against Kacsmaryk, it makes sense why DeSantis would choose to avoid publicly signing the six-week ban in order to avoid a similar fate.
Macduff, the chorus, Macbeth’s big Act IV aria — all scrapped. In typical stagings, Lady Macbeth comes across as an unsubtle, unrepentant harridan whose abrupt crisis of conscience in the opera’s final act stretches credulity. Heartbeat starts with Lady Macbeth’s breakdown as the essential truth of her character and then molds the narrative to fit it. The show begins with Lady Macbeth in bed, sobbing uncontrollably, full of remorse for all the blood she has helped to shed. In Heartbeat’s telling, Lady Macbeth, no longer the scapegoat for her husband’s foul behavior, is the one who is led astray by an avaricious spouse.

There is no income tax in New Hampshire or Washington, either, but both states tax investment earnings. But you still must pay taxes by the original deadline to avoid penalties and interest. Opinion: Don't count DeSantis out yet

A third Trump presidential nomination would indicate that Republican primary voters may prefer style over substance. But if they are serious about not just making liberals mad but advancing actual policy, GOP voters should consider other names, starting with the Florida governor. Recognizing key figures and institutions on the right in this way suggests a DeSantis administration would be serious about delivering on conservative principles. In short, DeSantis offers Republicans a glimpse into what a successful conservative approach to governing could look like. If GOP voters decide their primary operating principle is to enrage the media and “own the libs,” they will nominate Trump.

Van Jones last week pressed a Tennessee Republican over his caucus voting to oust two Democratic lawmakers. "You have not done this to anybody except for two people in 200 years," Jones told state Rep. Jeremy Faison. The GOP-led state House took the action after then-Reps. Jones and Pearson led a gun reform protest from the floor. Faison said he felt as though House Republicans followed the proper protocol. State Rep. Gloria Johnson, a white lawmaker who also joined the gun reform protest, was not expelled by House Republicans and remarked last week that "it's pretty clear" why she was spared.

Why, then, has Dimon been so willing to swing back into action in the wake of Silicon Valley Bank's collapse? But it's starting to look like JPMorgan — and Dimon — will end up winners no matter how things turn out. In backstopping First Republic, JPMorgan helps a client and a bank that experts say would fit nicely into its business. By saving First Republic, JPMorgan also stands to gain goodwill from Silicon Valley startups, which are customers of the smaller bank. The paper also reported that regulators asked Dimon, Bank of America, and other banks to buy Silicon Valley Bank and pay out depositors over the insured limit.

SVB sale puts too-big-to-fail risk in a new bottle

The sale of SVB to rival First Citizens Bancshares (FCNCA.O) addresses the first part, and doubles down on the second. First Citizens snapped up $110 billion of SVB’s assets over the weekend, at a generous $16.5 billion discount to book value. And for the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp, which is handling SVB’s sale, First Citizens chief Frank Holding is a known quantity. In SVB’s case, the FDIC has agreed to absorb some potential losses in the failed bank’s loan book. The FDIC expects its fund for managing failed banks will take a $20 billion hit.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has suggested he would sign a so-called heartbeat bill. Florida Republicans on Tuesday introduced a bill that seeks to ban abortion after six weeks of pregnancy, a measure that appears to have strong support from prominent state GOP leaders and would further reshape the U.S. abortion landscape. Since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade last June and cleared the way for states to ban abortion, Florida has been one of few outliers in the South, allowing the procedure up until 15 weeks of pregnancy. Since then, abortion has presented a tricky political balancing act for Republican Gov.
GOP lawmakers in Florida have introduced a six-week abortion ban. But the ramifications of a six-week ban in Florida would go beyond politics. As the session kicked off in Tallahassee on Tuesday, the path to a six-week abortion ban in Florida appeared more clear than it did a few months ago. In a press conference with reporters, she acknowledged the math was difficult but vowed the party would fight, arguing that a six-week ban was broadly unpopular among Floridians. Senate Minority Leader Lauren Book, a Democrat of Plantation, Florida, accused Republicans of going "scorched earth" with their abortion ban bill.
