By contrast, the modern day Democrats’ historic success at winning the popular vote hasn’t translated into nearly as much governing power for them. Over this record run of popular vote success, Democrats have already twice lost the Electoral College – and thus the White House – while winning more votes. Amazingly, Republicans won unified control of government in two elections when Democrats won a plurality of the national presidential vote: 2000 and 2016. The Democrats’ popular vote winning stretch began in 1992 with Clinton’s victory over George H.W. The highest share of the popular vote Democrats have won over this period is the 52.9% that Obama garnered in 2008.

Since August, we’ve been talking weekly with a group of young voters who are torn among Donald Trump, Kamala Harris and a write-in choice, to track their changing opinions. These undecided voters are really, really troubled by Trump’s refusal to admit he lost the 2020 election (and Vance’s refusal to say that in the debate). But Tim Walz’s question to Vance at the debate — did Trump lose the 2020 election? But I don’t know if I trust Trump to be a normal person for the next three months,” said Lillian, a 27-year-old Virginian who voted for Trump in 2020 but is now undecided. These voters suggest that Trump should be more worried than Harris right now.

With four weeks to go until Election Day, the 2024 polls continue to show a presidential race that remains on a knife’s edge — and well within the margin of error. It’s also true in the polls of the battleground states that will ultimately decide the presidential contest. Harris and Trump are essentially tied, perhaps with a slight lean toward Trump, in the Sun Belt states of Arizona, Georgia and North Carolina. And this is a fundamentally different race than the one that existed before President Joe Biden stepped aside from his re-election campaign and endorsed Harris. The 2024 race, ultimately, will be decided by turnout, concluding news events, how the third-party/undecided vote breaks and other factors.

Harris’ plan would boost the debt by $3.5 trillion over the next decade, while Trump’s platform would cause it to spike by $7.5 trillion, according to the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget’s report, released Monday. It found that Harris’ measures could have no significant impact on the debt or could increase it by $8.1 trillion. And Trump’s proposals could balloon the debt by between $1.5 trillion and $15.2 trillion. These proposals would cost $2.3 trillion in total. But the committee estimates these tariffs would bring in between $2 trillion and $4.3 trillion over a decade — not enough to cover Trump’s agenda.

House Speaker Mike Johnson on Sunday did not commit to calling Congress back into session before the election after President Joe Biden pressed congressional leaders about potential funding shortfalls in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. The president noted that the White House requested more funding for the program as Congress prepared a short-term funding bill that passed last month to avert a government shutdown. Pressed on whether he would call Congress back into session before the election, Johnson replied, "We'll be back in session immediately after the election." Johnson's comments come after Biden said in remarks at the White House last week he expects to ask Congress for a supplemental funding request for areas affected by Hurricane Helene. "The American people are disgusted by this, up with it, and so are Republicans in Congress," he said.

With 30 days to Election Day, Vice President Kamala Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, are launching a media blitz that began on Sunday, with the two set to appear in a handful of interviews with traditional and new media figures, a senior Harris campaign official told NBC News. The media blitz from Harris and Walz comes after Republicans have criticized the pair for weeks for avoiding taking questions from the media. The upcoming media interviews will also be accompanied by campaign events in battleground states for Harris and Walz. And Trump is all but guaranteed to resurface at the Supreme Court in coming weeks to clarify the sweeping criminal immunity the court bestowed on him in July. “As matters stand now, this feels like the court is keeping its powder dry in case the election explodes,” Carter Phillips, a veteran Supreme Court litigator, told CNN early last week. A poll released by the Annenberg Public Policy Center on Wednesday found 56% of Americans disapprove of the Supreme Court. Take, for instance, Trump’s ban on travel from predominately Muslim nations, which made repeat trips to the Supreme Court. Along with various appearances on Fox News, more friendly territory for the Republican nominee, Trump has interviewed on podcasts that are popular with young men like "This Past Weekend w/Theo Von" and the "Lex Fridman Podcast." In August, the Harris campaign spent $7.8 million on broadcast TV ads about abortion, about 15% of its total spending that month. Economic themes also dominated Harris campaign advertising throughout August and September. In August, the Trump campaign spent about $15.5 million on broadcast TV ads about immigration, or about 41% of its monthly broadcast TV outlays. New York CNN —The deal reached Thursday evening that ended a strike by 50,000 portworkers has a lot of winners and few if any losers. But that wage deal stopped what could have become the most disruptive US strike in decades had it lasted weeks or months. The strike halted the flow of imports and exports across dozens of ports, what could have been a massive blow had the strike continued. Not that this was the deal that the the United States Maritime Alliance, the group that negotiates on behalf of ship lines, terminal operators and ports, wanted. But it was the one they could settle for after the Biden administration made clear it wasn’t going to intervene.

The (Donald) Trump campaign, on the other hand, is looking to the Sun Belt. Instead of knocking on doors in key states, Trump’s allies are using funding from tech billionaire Elon Musk to do some nontraditional things. But some things are still going to be much more expensive on Election Day than they were when Trump was president. It’s one month to Election Day, but that’s a little bit of a misnomer.
