Opinion | Trump’s Call to End Taxes on Social Security
  + stars: | 2024-08-09 | by ( ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
To the Editor:Re “Trump Dangles New Tax Cuts, Now for a Larger Voting Group” (front page, Aug. 8):Donald Trump’s latest campaign gambit, calling for an end to taxes on Social Security benefits, risks deepening a generational divide already evidenced by his indifference to man-made climate change and the more than $8 trillion added to the national debt during his term in office. This article cited an estimate of another $1.8 trillion added to the national debt over a decade if his proposal comes to pass. This does not include the impact of continuing the Trump-era tax cuts beyond their expiration date in 2025. The Brookings Institution estimated this would add another $2 trillion to the national debt by 2028. Arthur GreenbergExeter, N.H.To the Editor:As a liberal, I’d support Donald Trump’s proposal to eliminate taxes on Social Security if he would pay for it by eliminating tax breaks for private equity investors, hedge fund managers, and other special interest groups that bought tax breaks from Congress, and by taxing the fossil fuel industry and other polluters.

CNN —As Deadpool breaks records at the box office with “Deadpool & Wolverine,” cover art depicting the of superhero’s first ever comic book appearance could sell for a record $7.5 million. Designed by writer and artist Rob Liefeld in 1991, it would become the most valuable comic book cover art ever sold if it fetches its asking price, according to Heritage Auctions, which is handling the sale. Deadpool became one of Marvel's most popular comic book characters. A poster of Deadpool hangs at the David H. Koch Theater during the premiere of "Deadpool and Wolverine" in New York City on July 23. The owner acquired it almost 20 years ago, after Liefed had sold it, but refused any offers to sell.

Hong Kong CNN —Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris’ running mate has a decades-long connection with China. “I remember waking up and seeing the news on June 4 that the unthinkable had happened,” Walz told Voice of America in an interview in 2014. The newlyweds spent their honeymoon taking students on two-week tours in China for sightseeing and classes on culture, education and history. In Chinese nationalist circles, which have an outsized voice on policy debates in China, there are no rosy illusions about Walz. The hashtag “Harris’ VP pick once taught in China” racked up 15 million views on microblogging site Weibo.

The dissolved calcium carbonate then reacts with the CO2 in the water to form bicarbonate salts, locking the CO2 away. Adkins says that with a full-scale reactor, he aims to capture and store about half of a ship’s CO2 emissions. BAR Technologies/Cargill French company Airseas has developed the Seawing, which it says could help ships cut their carbon emissions by an average of 20%. A British company called Seabound, for example, makes a device that captures between 25% and 95% of a ship’s CO2 emissions. “We think that ships are actually going to be able to compete with underground CO2 storage,” he said.

With only days to consider a range of contenders, Ms. Harris and her team were inundated with unsolicited advice — much of it public — about whom she should pick. Andy Beshear of Kentucky, who has also been vetted by the Harris team, appeared at a Harris campaign fund-raiser in Chicago. Mr. Biden was at home in Wilmington, Del., over the weekend while Ms. Harris interviewed prospective running mates in Washington. A White House spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment about whether he had spoken to Ms. Harris as she finished her deliberations. Once she chooses, Ms. Harris will spend much of the next week with her running mate.

Opinion | Fighting Malaria: The Role of Two Groups
  + stars: | 2024-08-05 | by ( ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
To the Editor:Re “Lives at Risk” (Science Times, July 23):The New York Times spotlights malaria, which kills nearly half a million African children annually, and the important role malaria vaccines are playing in reducing child deaths. The malaria vaccine pilots, for which the World Health Organization provided scientific and technical leadership, demonstrate the critical role W.H.O. advanced the first malaria vaccine (RTS,S) at the request of member states, even as global health partners focused their attention on other agendas. The pilots provided assurance that the vaccine is safe and highly effective — reducing child deaths by 13 percent. In some areas, combining the vaccine, insecticide-treated nets and chemoprevention can reduce malaria by more than 90 percent.

Tel Aviv, Israel CNN —As Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu celebrates what he sees as major victories against Hamas and Hezbollah this week, the mood in Tel Aviv is far from celebratory. On Wednesday, Netanyahu said that his country “struck crushing blows” to the “the three H’s” – Hamas, the Houthis and Hezbollah, all Iranian-backed, all fierce Israeli foes. Hamas also blamed Israel for the assassination of their political leader, Ismail Haniyeh, who was killed on Wednesday in Tehran. Netanyahu’s tone stands at odds with the mood on the ground in Tel Aviv, including among families of the hostages still in Gaza. Polls have repeatedly shown that most Israelis prioritize the release of hostages over continued war.

For now, Fed officials think the ongoing slowdown in hiring and a recent tick up in joblessness suggest the labor market is returning to normal after a few years of booming hiring. But while that approach is cautious when it comes to price increases, it could prove to be risky when it comes to the labor market. But that chain reaction can come at a serious cost to the job market. For now, Fed officials think that the ongoing slowdown in hiring and a recent tick up in joblessness signal that labor market conditions are returning to normal after a few years of booming hiring. Fed rate moves take time to work, so if the central bank only starts to cut borrowing costs when the job market is showing serious signs of strain, it could be moving too late.

“I think you were trying to roast me, but this is actually fact — I do have a BMI of 30. Conversely, BMI can underestimate body fat in older adults and anyone who has lost muscle, according to the Harvard T.H. Eleven years ago, in 2013, Holder said that Mohammed and his associates would have been “on death row as we speak” had the case gone to federal court as he proposed. But he blamed Congress for blocking a federal trial that would have resulted in swifter justice. They were dealt a bad hand by the political hacks and those who lost faith in our justice system,” Holder said in a statement to NBC News on Thursday. “If my decision to try KSM and his confederates in the tested and effective federal court system had been followed they would be nothing more than a memory today,” Holder said. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., said he’s “long advocated that our federal court system is perfectly capable of conducting this kind of trial” and was well-suited to handling serious crimes.

What to Watch as the Fed Meets on Wednesday
  + stars: | 2024-07-31 | by ( Jeanna Smialek | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Economists and traders widely expect Fed officials to cut their policy rate at their next meeting, in September. Wall Street will closely watch for any hints about the future in both the Fed’s statement at 2 p.m. and a subsequent news conference with Jerome H. Powell, the chair of the central bank. And Mr. Powell is sure to face questions about how officials are thinking about the potential for moves after that. Watch the Fed’s statement for changes. The Fed’s statement, a slowly changing document that officials release after each two-day meeting, currently states that Fed policymakers expect to hold rates steady until they have “gained greater confidence that inflation is moving sustainably” down.
