Read previewRussia is forcing thousands of African migrants and students to join in their war efforts against Ukraine, Bloomberg reported on Sunday, citing assessments from European officials. According to Bloomberg's report, Russian officials have threatened not to renew the visas of African migrant workers and students if they didn't join the Russian Armed Forces. Some African workers have even been threatened with deportation if they do not agree to fight in Ukraine, one European official told Bloomberg. Russia's reliance on attrition warfare has seen it continually drawing on its prison population to fuel its war effort. Russia's prison population stood at 420,000 before the war.

In the 2022 elections, I was the only candidate in the country to unseat an incumbent governor of either party. Kitchen-table politics are once again demonstrating power in Nevada, as polling shows former President Donald Trump with a sizable lead over President Biden. When I took office, Nevada was grappling with the economic hangover of the pandemic. Since Mr. Biden took office, prices have risen 19 percent, a major factor in real average weekly earnings dropping 4 percent. This type of economic turmoil is simply unsustainable for Nevada families.

CNN —Former President Donald Trump lost Rep. Mike Garcia’s district by more than 12 points four years ago. I’m the Republican,” said Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer, whose Oregon district Biden won by eight points in 2020, confirming she’s sticking with Trump after his conviction. Rep. Mike Lawler, whose New York district Biden carried by 10 points, sharply criticized the prosecution against Trump. Republicans in this camp believe there is no limit to how hard they can lean in to talking about Trump’s conviction and see the Trump verdict as a golden ticket. GOP Rep. Ralph Norman, a Republican hardliner from South Carolina, said Republicans would “absolutely” retaliate against Trump’s political enemies after November, including prosecutors.

CNN —The Israeli military rescued four hostages in a special operation in the Nuseirat refugee camp, central Gaza, that Gazan authorities said killed 236 people and injured more than 400 others. An Israeli policeman from a special counter-terrorism unit was killed in Saturday’s rescue operation, according to Israeli police. At least 236 people have been killed as a result of the rescue operation and more than 400 injured, hospital officials in Gaza said Saturday. The killed and wounded were taken to two hospitals in Gaza, Al-Awda Hospital in Nuseirat and Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir Al-Balah. An Israeli military spokesperson put the number of casualties from the operation at “under 100,” and had no information on how many of those were civilians.

Hong Kong CNN —As profit margins get squeezed, temperatures are rising in the world’s biggest car market. A tense exchange between two major Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers in recent days highlights the pressures they face as a price war in the industry intensifies. While top executives from the EV industry often post on social media about a range of topics, including technology and advertising, they rarely name rival companies, especially when criticizing them. In recent months, a price war has escalated in China’s hyper-competitive EV industry, with manufacturers battling for consumer attention with deep discounts or newer, cheaper models. The country has more than 200 EV manufacturers who are grappling with huge oversupply and slowing consumer demand.

Even the highest of achievers can struggle with feelings of loneliness and unbearable sadness behind closed doors — a state that's commonly referred to as high-functioning depression. High-functioning depression isn't a clinical diagnosis, but the National Alliance on Mental Illness recognizes it as a term that can describe "anyone who is grappling with mental health issues while accomplishing their day-to-day tasks and upholding their responsibilities." Symptoms of high-functioning depression can present differently than the severe signs of major depressive disorder like diet changes, sleep disturbances, fatigue and feelings of hopelessness, says April Simpkins, mother of the late Miss USA winner Cheslie Kryst. European Central Bank officials are expected to cut interest rates this week for the first time in more than five years, drawing a line under the worst of the eurozone’s inflation crisis and easing the pressure on the region’s weak economy. But as policymakers in the eurozone move ahead, they leave behind their counterparts at the U.S. Federal Reserve, who are grappling with a seemingly more persistent inflation problem and warning that it will take longer to cut rates there. Lowering interest rates in Europe before the United States does would create a gap between the policies of two of the world’s largest and most influential central banks. to ease its policy could weaken the euro, while higher interest rates in the United States would continue to tighten financial conditions there and in other countries because of the global role of the dollar. can split from the Federal Reserve, while others say a divergence is not unusual and reflects two different economic situations.

New York CNN —Walmart, America’s largest private-sector employer, is starting a bonus program for its hourly employees. Walmart has an outsized impact on the labor market for hourly workers , and has been grappling with finding and retaining the workers it needs in a tight labor market. The company has 1.6 million US employees, of which nearly 1.5 million are hourly workers. It said this new program covers about 700,000 of those hourly employees who work in stores. Walmart boosted the average pay of its store managers from $117,000 to $128,000, or by just over 9%, the retailer announced earlier this year.

CEOs are making almost 200 times what workers are

The median CEO in the S&P 500 was paid 196 times as much as the median employee in 2023, according to an analysis by Equilar and The Associated Press. The widening divide is driven by the fact that CEO pay — which is closely tied to share prices — is rising notably faster than that of employees. Median total compensation for S&P 500 CEOs (including stock awards) soared to $16.3 million in 2023 — a huge year-over-year increase of 12.6%, compared to just 0.9% in 2022. The median S&P 500 employee earned $81,467 last year, up 5.2% from 2022, the report said. Given the rising stock market, the median stock award increased by 10.7% to $9.4 million, the report found.

But it’s not just the massive scale of the event that makes it so important in the eyes of observers across the border in the United States. Key to facilitating this shift was the creation of the USMCA trade agreement, which came into effect in 2020 between Mexico, the United States and Canada. “Mexico committed to addressing the two main Mexican issues affecting the United States and that will determine the next election: migration and fentanyl. “But the United States also has to dismantle the network of traffickers within (its own borders). This month’s thrillers are full of women grappling with misdeeds — in some cases their own, but mostly those of men. We start in Dublin, where Lou Manson, a college professor, is trying as hard as she can to forget the awful thing that happened more than 30 years ago. But when a figure from the past suddenly emerges, it all comes flooding back. “It only takes a second for the terror and guilt to find me,” she says. It’s also about how hard it can be for victims to find peace.

That means an improving manufacturing cycle but slowing services can lead to a divergence between market performance and economic performance. “We’ve witnessed records repeatedly break in both stock and housing markets over the past year.”In addition to unrelentingly high home prices, the housing market is also grappling with a chronic lack of homes on the market and elevated mortgage rates. CNN —After months of either ignoring or poking fun at former President Donald Trump’s criminal trial, the Biden campaign on Tuesday decided for the first time to stage a news conference about Trump’s record outside the courthouse where closing arguments were taking place. In their view, Trump’s trial would speak for itself, reintroducing the former president and the chaos that surrounds him to voters who may have tuned him out. “The entire news media is camped out here, day in and day out,” campaign communications director Michael Tyler said, explaining the choice to address reporters outside the lower Manhattan courthouse. Biden campaign officials are still grappling with the reality, this person said, that a substantial part of the population still doesn’t see that the choice on Election Day will be between Biden and Trump. “We knew Trump was out of control when he was president,” De Niro says over a shot of Trump behind the Resolute Desk.
