Despite a mixed earnings season so far, analysts are still optimistic on a host of stocks that have yet to report. By this week's end, more than half of S & P 500 companies will have reported quarterly earnings, according to The Earnings Scout. As analysts and traders look to the second half of the earnings season, these are some of the stocks with upward momentum heading into their reports. CNBC Pro screened S & P 500 stocks for those that are reporting next week and have seen the average analyst raise earnings estimates at least 10% when looking over a three- and six-month period. These stocks have also had their average targets for share prices raised in the last three months.

The Republican supermajority in the Louisiana State Legislature pushed through a bill this year banning gender-transition care for minors, along with other legislation banning Covid vaccine requirements in schools and any classroom discussion of gender identity and sexual orientation. It was the kind of aggressive social policy agenda that has gained traction in conservative states across the country. The reason: John Bel Edwards, the lone Democratic governor in the Deep South. He has used vetoes with some success as a bulwark against conservative legislation in a state where Republicans have had a lock on the legislature for more than a decade. In Louisiana, governors have a history of successfully wielding vetoes; most years, lawmakers have not even bothered trying to override them.

Other European countries are pursuing their own rocket artillery, buying HIMARS or building new systems. Sovfoto/Universal Images Group via Getty ImagesMultiple launch rocket systems have been around since World War II, when the legendary Soviet Katyusha battered Nazi forces. But Russia adapted and moved its command and supply centers out of HIMARS range, though at the price of compromising some efficiency. Rocket artillery can't replace howitzers, which offer some advantages, such as the ability to fire barrages continuously for hours. Still, rocket artillery is certain to join howitzers as the backbone of Western artillery.

Wikipedia’s Moment of Truth

At the moment, it goes against the grain to bet against A.I. The big tech companies, wagering billions on the new technologies and largely undaunted by their shortcomings or risks, seem intent on forging ahead as fast as they can. While Wikipedia’s licensing policy lets anyone tap its knowledge and text — to “reuse and remix” it however they might like — it does have several conditions. Mixing Wikipedia’s corpus into a chatbot model that gives answers to queries without explaining the sourcing may thus violate Wikipedia’s terms of use, two people in the open-source software community told me. In April, Reddit announced that it would not make its corpus available for scraping by big tech companies without compensation.

I took British Airways' Flying with Confidence course to help me overcome my fear of flying. And I know I'm not alone: up to 40% of Americans have a form of aerophobia, otherwise known as the fear of flying. So, in an effort to face my fears head-on, I recently attended British Airways' Flying with Confidence course. But in the same way that pilots always prepare for the worst kind of turbulence, aircraft designers do too. Breathing is keyOne of the main takeaways from the course was how to control my fear of flying through breath control.

The moment of triumph for HBO is coming at a time of transition for the network, which since last year has been run by a debt-ridden parent company, Warner Bros. The network is now part of a streaming service that removed its call letters (bye HBO Max, hello Max). HBO had the three most nominated shows: “Succession” (27), “The Last of Us” (24) and “The White Lotus” (23). It was in 1992, when NBC landed nominations for “I’ll Fly Away,” “L.A. Law,” “Law & Order” and “Quantum Leap.” All four series lost to that year’s winner, “Northern Exposure,” from CBS.

Wall Street's glide toward higher stocks and falling bond yields was jolted into reverse Thursday, as surprisingly strong economic data sent bond yields soaring and stocks tumbling . For example, the iPath Series B S & P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (VXX) and the ProShares VIX Short-Term Futures ETF (VIXY) serve as bets that investor expectations of volatility will go up from here. The UVXY is designed to provide 1.5-times returns of the VIX short-term futures and was up about 8% in midday trading. Rising yields Profiting from rate spikes through bond funds can be a bit tricky. The biggest fund in that space is the iShares Floating Rate Bond ETF (FLOT) , which was little changed on Thursday.

July 6 (Reuters) - The world's largest emitters of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases are coming under fresh scrutiny after global temperatures averaged 17.01 degrees Celsius (62.62 Fahrenheit) on Monday, the highest ever recorded. PRESSURE POINTSChina, the world's single largest CO2 polluter since 2005, has come under particular scrutiny after the country generated over 30% of global CO2 discharge in 2022, according to the Energy Institute Statistical Review of World Energy. CO2 emissions by key region since 1990India, already the world's third largest CO2 polluter in 2022, is seen increasing total CO2 discharge until 2040, while CO2 emissions in Indonesia - the seventh largest polluter last year - may not peak until 2050. Brazil, number 13 on the CO2 list in 2022, also looks set to keep CO2 discharge totals climbing over the coming years. However, each nation also has aggressive plans for reducing energy sector emissions and lowering reliance on fossil fuels.

Russian jamming seems to be affecting Ukraine's communications and US-provided weapons, experts say. "The problem may well be the sheer power of the jamming signal that can be brought to bear," Withington said. "Moreover, the closer the GPS receiver is to the R-330Zh's jamming antenna, the stronger the jamming signal becomes." Russia's counter-GPS efforts are part of a massive electronic-warfare campaign that has also disrupted Ukrainian radio communications and drone operations. John Moore/Getty ImagesAccording to the RUSI report, Russian EW troops are also "highly capable" at intercepting and decrypting Ukrainian radio communications.

On Her Debut Album, Olivia Dean Is Already Pushing Ahead

Olivia Dean could easily have stayed in one lane for her debut album, “Messy.” She has been on a glide path to a career in smooth English pop-soul. Dean, 24, has been releasing songs since 2018 — long enough to make her first album feel like a turning point instead of an introduction. She was born in London — to a Guyanese-Jamaican mother and an English father — and soaked up music from her father’s album collection. And like Amy Winehouse, Adele, Leona Lewis, Raye, Jessie J and Imogen Heap, Dean showed enough youthful talent to attend the star-making BRIT School of performing arts. Like other newcomers, Dean gained attention for a featured vocal with an electronic act, performing “Adrenaline” with Rudimental in 2019.

Even though inflation is slowing in many countries after more than a year of interest rate hikes, it remains above the 2% level many central banks are targeting. Raising interest rates is the primary tool central bankers have at their disposal to get inflation down. That’s why the Federal Reserve paused interest rate hikes at its June meeting after 10 consecutive hikes since last March. It’s harder for central banks to clamp down on inflation when it becomes sticky, or persistently high. That’s because research shows that inflation, if unaddressed, could become even more sticky and harder for central banks to control with rate hikes.

“The main purpose of this aircraft is to support our ground forces at the front,” he explains. “I think we increase the morale of our ground forces too.”One of the main issues Kyiv’s ground forces have faced as the counteroffensive gets underway is Russian air power holding them back. "Juice" says the Ukrainian air force would be much more capable of protecting advancing ground forces if it had better aircraft. But the US now says it will train Ukrainian pilots on the aircraft, and the UK and Denmark have been pressing for more. But while Russia maintains technological superiority in the air, it’ll be very difficult for Ukrainian pilots to push Moscow’s pilots out of their skies.

I followed the river toward the Uffizi Gallery where I stopped, enchanted by the scene below. It’s “a search for the delectable, delicious, almost gustatory delights of the moment,” as they put it. Other times, an object or architectural detail that piques your interest — a gate, a gargoyle — provides a portal to another time. Stories of vanished ages can be triggered by a single stone, then explored back home through books and websites. Being in a big city among so many strangers can be at turns exhilarating and disturbing.

CNN —Ukraine’s counteroffensive against Russian forces has not yet gained the momentum that some overly optimistic observers anticipated. Still it is a formidable task: in the south especially, Ukrainian forces must conduct a frontal assault against deeply prepared defensive positions, and critically they lack air superiority. It’s worth noting that Russian units in one heavily-contested area – belonging to the 58th Combined Arms Army – are among the most effective in the military. Ukrainian units in the area have had to adapt, often breaking down into smaller groups that are less easily detected. Dmytro Kuleba, Ukrainian Foreign Minister, has said that if the offensive succeeds in expelling Russian forces from Ukrainian land, “It will be the last.

CNN —The beginning of the much-anticipated Ukrainian counteroffensive against Russia seems not to have been a resounding success for Kyiv. But they don’t mean that all is lost for Ukraine – or even that Ukraine is now losing. Russia’s artillery ammunition, missile stockpiles and most-modern ground combat vehicles were gravely depleted, so 60-year-old tanks have been withdrawn from storage. It was while attempting to breach a path through one such fortified minefield that the 47th Brigade’s vehicles bogged down last week. Notably, a parallel drive toward Mariupol at the same time as the 47th’s failed attack last week has made fast gains, compelling Russian forces to withdraw from several settlements.

June 12 (Reuters) - Harley-Davidson (HOG.N) said on Monday the motorcycle maker will be running limited motorcycle manufacturing operations at its York facility after being notified of an issue with parts from a third-party supplier. "We have a strong inventory position in the network to help us navigate through this situation," Harley-Davidson CEO Jochen Zeitz said. Production at the facility, its largest with nearly 1,000 union employees, was to resume on June 13. This is a new supplier quality issue, separate from a similar incidence that caused the production suspension in May 2022, Harley said. Harley now anticipates resuming full motorcycle manufacturing operations at its York facility on June 26, 2023.

The primary is likely a contest between Trump supporters and those who want an alternative. And GOP primary voters know Trump's "brand." The GOP primary base appears to split into two even camps: Trump supporters and those looking for an alternative. Primary contenders not named Donald Trump will likely be fighting over the same group of moderate GOP supporters. As Michael Tesler of FiveThirtyEight points out, Trump now commands a majority of "very conservative" primary voters, despite losing those voters in 2016.
