Tesla's robotaxi will almost certainly face safety and regulatory questions before it comes to market. Waymo and Cruise have also encountered regulatory challenges with their autonomous vehicles. It has a permit to test autonomous vehicles with a driver on public roads in the state. "It's a problem of their own making," Phil Koopman, a professor at Carnegie Mellon University and an expert in autonomous vehicle safety, told Business Insider. Klaudia Radecka | Nurphoto | Getty ImagesTesla 's hyped robotaxi unveiling posed a threat to Uber 's ride-sharing aspirations, but it has turned into a boon for the stock instead. That is a massive turnaround for Uber's stock, which is now up nearly 22% over the past month and about 38% for the year. "We believe this helps minimize the ongoing overhang on UBER's stock from TSLA's aspirations in the robotaxi space." Although Tesla appears committed to developing its robotaxi fleet without partnering with existing ride-sharing platforms, Colantuoni expects it could ultimately have to look into this option. Tesla "potentially underappreciates the obstacles to scaling a robotaxi fleet" and could struggle to scale its fleet operations without offering access to demand through Uber and Lyft, he said.

AMD launches AI chip to rival Nvidia's Blackwell

AMD launched a new artificial-intelligence chip on Thursday that is taking direct aim at Nvidia’s data center graphics processors, known as GPUs. In the past few years, Nvidia has dominated the majority of the data center GPU market, but AMD is historically in second place. The new AI chip is the successor to the MI300X, which started shipping late last year. Most industry estimates say Nvidia has over 90% of the market for data center AI chips. The new CPUs are particularly good for feeding data into AI workloads, AMD said.

The moment I saw I had an email from my solar company, I knew my nightmare was about to take another unsettling turn. But he didn't know any more than I did about how much longer my solar panels would remain useless. Meanwhile, my solar panels have been sitting on my roof for four months, entirely unused, taunting me from above. AdvertisementI also reached out to California's Contractors State License Board, which regulates solar companies, asking what recourse SunPower's customers had. But it seems ludicrous to buy a solar system that I had no intention of buying in the first place.

Tesla is expected to unveil a new service at its Robotaxi event that will impact Uber and Lyft. The ride-hailing industry has so far been dominated by two major players — Uber and Lyft — and Gawrelski said Tesla's Robotaxi could mark a new challenger jockeying for market share. Uber, Lyft, and Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Ives said Tesla's Robotaxi event will be a historical day for the auto industry — and it will pressure Uber to seek out more partnerships. In September, Waymo announced that its Waymo One ride-hailing service would be available to users in Austin and Atlanta exclusively through the Uber app.

US government considers a breakup of Google
  + stars: | 2024-10-09 | by ( Clare Duffy | Brian Fung | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +3 min
The US Department of Justice in a court filing Tuesday night said it may recommend dismantling Google’s core businesses, separating Google’s search business from Android, Chrome and the Google Play app store. “That would prevent Google from using products such as Chrome, Play, and Android to advantage Google search and Google search-related products and features — including emerging search access points and features, such as artificial intelligence — over rivals or new entrants,” the government said in its court filing. The case had been described as the biggest tech antitrust case since the US government’s antitrust showdown with Microsoft at the turn of the millennium. Whatever ultimately happens to Google could set the stage for potential remedies in other, ongoing antitrust cases against tech giants. Google faces a separate case brought by DOJ attorneys, along with 17 states, who allege that its advertising business is anticompetitive.

CVS Health and UnitedHealth Group are demanding Federal Trade Commission Chairwoman Lina Khan and two other commissioners recuse themselves from a lawsuit accusing the companies and other drug middlemen of boosting their profits while inflating insulin costs for Americans. In separate motions filed Tuesday night with the FTC, CVS and UnitedHealth argued that all three commissioners have an extensive track record of making public statements that indicate "serious bias" against the companies' so-called pharmacy benefit managers. CVS said those statements demonstrate that the commissioners have "prejudged this matter," so their participation in the case "violates due process." The FTC filed the suit last month against the three largest PBMs, CVS Health's Caremark, UnitedHealth Group 's Optum Rx and Cigna 's Express Scripts. The FTC has been investigating PBMs and their role in insulin prices since 2022.

Zara's website is often ridiculed for being confusing. This helps Zara target aspirational shoppers who can't afford to splurge on high fashion. Luxury giants such as LVMH and Kering have seen sales slow in recent months, in part because aspirational shoppers are being squeezed. Zara stores have a minimalist look. New York CNN —Google is so synonymous with its core product that its name is a verb that means “search.” Yet Google’s dominance of that market is shrinking. For the first time in decades, Google next year will not control a majority of the US search market, according to a forecast by advertising research firm eMarketer. Google will remain the biggest search player, maintaining a 48% share of American search advertising revenue. That ruling could result in the eventual breakup of the company’s search business. In Week 5, scoring returned — and, in several cases, it happened in some of the oddest and most unexpected ways. The Jacksonville Jaguars’ Tank Bigsby was first hit 14 yards from the end zone by one Indianapolis Colts tackler and appeared to be wrapped up by another at the 11. Yet, with two teammates pushing him forward, he wound up with a touchdown instead of a short gain, a score that became part of Jacksonville’s first victory. Two minutes before halftime, Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love dropped back into his end zone and was shoved with two hands — but not sacked for a safety — by a chasing Rams defender. Officially, he went 101 yards, 18 yards longer than Seattle’s previous franchise record for a fumble return.

Wall Street's top performers are hard workers who tend to work long, intense hours. Business Insider asked its 2024 class of Wall Street stars about how they stay mentally sharp. Here's what we learned about the hacks, habits, and routines that help top talent on Wall Street stay on their game. The routine helps him stay present with his home life as well as work, he added.
