If you're financing the home, you're going to be paying a mortgage, he pointed out: "Yes, you are paying down principal." But, at the end of the day, a monthly mortgage payment is an expense. This was more than double the next-largest increase in net worth since 1989, when the Fed began the survey. Median net worth — which measures household assets like houses and vehicles, minus debts like mortgages and student loans — surged to $192,000 when accounting for inflation. While this group, comprised of younger millennials and Gen Zers, has a much smaller net worth than any other age group, median net worth grew from $16,100 to $39,000 during the three-year period. So-called DINKs, or couples with "double income, no kids," also saw huge net worth increases, according to the Fed's survey. Americans in the 55 to 64 age group saw median net worth gains of 48%, while those between the ages of 65 and 74 had a 33% rise in median net worth.

Banks’ wealth-management heyday may have passed

For wealth managers, that will make revenue growth much harder to come by, shifting the focus to controlling expenses. LOSING ITS SPARKLEIn Wall Street parlance, wealth management is a capital-light business. Little wonder Morgan Stanley boss James Gorman focused on wealth management after taking charge in 2010. The good news for UBS and Morgan Stanley is that they are better placed than most to handle these pressures. The bank’s wealth-management business generated a 35% ROTE, while the division that houses investment banking and trading managed just 8%.

When she died, Grandma Sue left the most common form of inheritance, called an accidental bequest, which is simply the money left over when someone dies. The New York Times reported on a coming inheritance wealth boom in 2023, 2019, 2014, 2008, and 1999. Even for families with incomes in the 51% to 90% range of earners, the average inheritance was $46,000 — hardly life-changing money. Researchers have been talking about the coming Great Wealth Transfer for at least a quarter of a century. But the reality is that all the wealth boomers are sitting on probably won't end up fixing our collective financial problems.

NEW YORK, Oct 17 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Having given up a side-gig in DJ-ing, Goldman Sachs (GS.N) boss David Solomon has one less distraction. Goldman reported a one-third year-on-year drop in earnings on Tuesday, in a quarter riddled with one-off charges. Those included a hit related to buy-now-pay-later lender GreenSky, which Goldman bought only two years ago, and is selling. Absent all that, Goldman would have made a return on equity of just over 10%. Goldman made a 7.1% return on equity in the quarter, on an annualized basis, which would have been 10.2% without one-off charges.

Our experts answer readers' investing questions and write unbiased product reviews (here's how we assess investing products). Investing soon and regularly is the best way to participate and receive the benefit of the market. That is the perfect opportunity to invest half of the lump sum, then keep investing a designated amount on a monthly basis. I know this first hand; several years ago, my father invested a lump sum of $10,000 and then couldn't take the ups and downs that come with investing. Investing consistently means that you will be able to participate in the market regardless of market conditions.

Citi first announced its plan to exit China consumer banking in April 2021 as part of a global strategy revamp. The consumer banking business mainly served rich clients with deposit, fund and structured product offerings. Reuters first reported late last month that HSBC was set to acquire Citi's China consumer wealth business, in a major boost to the London-based bank's business in the world's second-largest economy. Apart from the China consumer banking deal, Citi plans to complete the sale of its Indonesia consumer business later this year, the bank statement said.
