Emma Mcintyre | Getty ImagesWhen Paul Scanlan and Jeff Annison first dreamed up their production studio, Legion M, they set out to build not just a company, but a community. While crowdfunding is not a new concept, Legion M is taking it to the next level — giving ordinary moviegoers a seat at Hollywood's table. That's what sets Legion M apart. For Legion M's "My Dead Friend Zoe," the company collected funds from Legion M investors and from larger, more traditional Hollywood financiers, including Kansas City Chiefs star tight end Travis Kelce. He said working with Legion M "felt very natural from the first call."

Mention Belmopan, Belize’s capital that sits deep in the country’s interior, and many Belizeans will belittle the city as a bastion of pencil-pushing bureaucrats that’s not just dull, but also devoid of nightlife. “I was warned, ‘Belmopan is for the newlyweds or the nearly deads,’” said Raquel Rodriguez, 45, owner of an art school, about the reactions when she moved to Belmopan from coastal, bustling Belize City. Not exactly known as an Eden for young urbanites, Belmopan figures among the smallest capital cities anywhere in the Americas. The capital of Central America’s only English-speaking nation can feel jarringly different from the frenetic capitals of neighboring countries. In terms of its origins and design, Belmopan has more in common with the capitals of other former British colonies, especially in Africa.

As investors ponder how — and where — to invest in this uncertain climate, CNBC Pro asked market experts where they recommend allocating $100,000. "By investing purely in cash and fixed income, you can already get a decent return," Jia said. And with global central banks cutting rates, fixed income will likely benefit from capital gains as well because of the duration." Within fixed income, Jia likes government bonds from developed countries and investment-grade bonds from "reputable firms," which offer "quality" and "longer-term growth" potential. Investors nearing retirement, for instance, should have a more conservative portfolio mix of 80% in fixed income and 20% in equities, according to Jia.

Berkshire is making bank on bonds, and its $168 billion cash pile is worth more than Uber or Nike. Assets aplentyBerkshire held $561 billion of net assets at the end of December, a 19% increase from a year earlier. Berkshire's $1 trillion-plus of assets included $354 billion of stocks, $178 billion of property and equipment, $130 billion of Treasury bills, and $24 billion of inventories. That figure is larger than the value of General Electric ($167 billion), Comcast ($166 billion), Uber ($162 billion), Nike ($160 billion), Walmart ($159 billion), American Express ($156 billion), or Pfizer ($155 billion). The upshot is that on December 31, Berkshire held $354 billion of stocks, and $168 billion of cash and other short-term investments — a ratio of nearly 2:1.

Jamie Dimon, President & CEO,Chairman & CEO JPMorgan Chase, speaking on CNBC's Squawk Box at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos, Switzerland on Jan. 17th, 2024. JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon isn't worried about the added competition from a bulked-up Capital One if its $35.3 billion takeover of Discover Financial gets approved. Dimon, speaking to CNBC's Leslie Picker from a Miami conference, acknowledged that if regulators approve the Capital One-Discover deal, his bank will be eclipsed as the nation's biggest credit-card lender. The deal has two major components: the credit card business and the payment network, Dimon noted. It's unclear if Capital One can create a true alternative to the dominant card networks in Visa and Mastercard with this deal, Dimon said.

The real-estate investor, consultant, and author of "30-Day Stay" explained how and why she did a 1031 exchange. How a 1031 exchange worksWith a 1031 exchange, you're essentially selling one property, purchasing another, and avoiding capital gains taxes in the process. There are ways to reduce your capital gains tax liability, like deducting your property's depreciation. But, with a 1031 exchange, you can sidestep your capital gains taxes indefinitely and continue reinvesting in more profitable properties and growing your wealth. An efficient portfolio typically focuses on both income and price returns, said certified financial planner David Blanchett, head of retirement research at PGIM, the asset management arm of insurer Prudential Financial. "It really depends on that retirees' perception of how they're going to access their savings to fund their retirement spending," Blanchett said. Higher yields are doing the heavy lifting Generally, the rule of thumb is to withdraw about 4% of your portfolio a year during retirement. His firm uses the Dodge & Cox Income (DODIX) fund and BlackRock Strategic Income Opportunities (BSIIX) fund. "If you have a diversified portfolio, in theory, you can actually get higher income over time as the companies that you own pay out higher dividends," he said.

It's a chess move by one of the savviest long-term thinkers in American finance, Capital One CEO Richard Fairbank. Fairbank, who became a billionaire by building Capital One into a credit card giant since its 1994 IPO, is betting that buying rival card company Discover will better position the company for global payments' murky future. The deal, if approved, enables Capital One to leapfrog JPMorgan as the biggest credit card company by loans, and solidifies its position as the third largest by purchase volume. By 2027, the bank expects to add at least $175 billion in payments and 25 million of its cardholders onto the Discover network. The danger of higher rates for longer following the latest hot inflation reading raises the "downside risk" for regional banks, according to Bank of America. "Fewer and later Fed rate cuts pose downside risk to bank stocks," analyst Ebrahim Poonawala wrote in a Tuesday note. "We are especially concerned about the failure of the broader market to project the trajectory of interest rates – a consistent theme since the Fed began raising interest rates in March 2022." Europe’s biggest economy shrank last year for the first time since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. And the outlook isn’t much brighter: the International Monetary Fund predicts that Germany will be the slowest-growing major economy in 2024, eking out an increase of just 0.5%. “Germany needs a fundamental economic transformation,” Marcel Fratzcher, president of the German Institute for Economic Research in Berlin, told CNN. Carsten Koall/Getty ImagesHomegrown troublesAlongside an external environment that has become more hostile to Germany’s outward-facing economy, the country’s internal political climate has worsened. Businesses such as these, which can find new markets and applications for their know-how, may hold the key to reviving Germany’s moribund economy.
