Aug 18 (Reuters) - Estee Lauder (EL.N) forecast annual sales and profit below estimates on Friday, indicating a slower-than-expected rebound in its travel retail business, mainly in Asia, and waning demand in the United States, sending its shares down about 3%. Analysts note that the drop in consumer demand in China and a slow recovery in Asia travel retail - sales made at airports or travel destinations like Korea and China's Hainan - could impact luxury companies like Estee, which makes about 30% of its annual revenue from the Asia Pacific region. "De-stocking and inventory levels in Asian Travel Retail… likely to remain the biggest headwind to growth over the next few quarters," said Bernstein analyst Callum Elliott. Estee expects full-year sales to rise between 5% and 7%, compared with an estimated 8.8% increase, according to Refinitiv data. It sees annual adjusted profit to be between $3.50 and $3.75 per share, compared with an expectation of $4.83.

Analysts have said the drop in consumer demand in China and a slow recovery in Asia travel retail - sales made at airports or travel destinations like Korea and China's Hainan - could impact luxury companies like Estee, which makes about 30% of its annual revenue from the Asia Pacific region. "Asia travel retail pressured results, particularly in Skin Care, and we continued to experience softness in North America," CEO Fabrizio Freda said in a statement. Estee Lauder's Americas region reported flat net sales compared to a year ago, while Asia-Pacific reported a 29% increase in sales. The company expects annual adjusted profit per share to be between $3.50 and $3.75, compared with analysts' expectation of $4.83. However, on an adjusted basis, Estee earned a profit of 7 cents per share, compared to an estimated loss of 4 cents per share.

Traders work on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in New York City, U.S., August 15, 2023. But equally there was little let-up in the bad news from China's ailing economy and real estate sector. China's securities regulator said on Friday it would cut trading costs, support share buybacks and introduce long-term capital as it unveiled a package of measures aimed at reviving the stock market and boosting investor confidence. Other Asian bourses and European stocks fell too, with U.S. stock futures also in the red before the open. Emerging market equity indices (.MSCIEF) teetered near two-month lows too.

The chart below is meant to provide a high level view of the revenue exposure each of the 35 companies in our portfolio has to the world's second-largest economy. First, a couple caveats: Our energy exploration and production stocks Coterra Energy (CTRA) and Pioneer Natural Resources (PXD) screen as having zero revenue exposure outside of the United States. Nvidia (NVDA) is another stock where the direct revenue exposure can be misleading. That makes the 60% revenue exposure to the Asia-Pacific region more concerning, even as mainland China realized organic sales growth during the quarter. As a result, total sales, services sales and wearables, home and accessories sales all set June quarter records in Greater China.

Next week could be a tough one for some companies slated to report earnings. Heading into the new week, however, there are some companies analysts have become more pessimistic on and have cut estimates ahead of their reports. The cosmetics giant is slated to report earnings Aug. 18. Both companies have noted a more cautious consumer due to sticky inflation in past earnings reports. Analysts polled by FactSet forecast adjusted earnings per share of $4.46 for Home Depot and $1.69 for Walmart.

A challenging outlook for Estee Lauder 's Asia business has pushed Citi to the sidelines on its stock. Analyst Filippo Falorni downgraded the beauty company's stock to neutral from buy and cut his price target by $45 to $195. His new target implies shares could rise 8.3% in the next 12 months from Monday's close. Citi's checks in China show consumers continue to trade down from premium to mass market brands, while Estee Lauder's inventories remain elevated, Falorni said. Beyond China, Falorni also noted the company's recent disclosure that parts of its business were disrupted by a cyberattack.
