In fact, they're often specifically designed to be irresistible, a scientist who used to work with UPF companies told Business Insider. But over time, Smith said companies became more interested in enhancing food to make it irresistible to the point where people feel they can't stop eating it. That's because sonic branding, or associating a sound with a product, can make us want to consume it, Smith said. How a chocolate bar sounds when it snaps can be engineered. So, similar to sound, companies use our sense of smell to grab our attention and make us crave their products.

Roche said Thursday that its Wegovy rival weight loss drugs will be part of a suite of medicines aimed at combatting the effects of obesity. CEO Thomas Schinecker welcomed positive early stage trial results from the firm's two weight loss drug candidates as showing "best in disease potential." "We do believe we have two next generation GLP-1/GIPs that have a best in disease potential," he said of the obesity drugs. GLP-1s, or glucagon-like peptide 1 agonists, are a group of drugs used to treat diabetes and obesity. They form the basis of weight loss drugs such as Novo Nordisk's Wegovy and Eli Lilly's Zepbound.

Shares of Dexcom tumbled more than 35% in extended trading Thursday after the diabetes management company reported disappointing revenue for the second quarter and offered weak guidance. The company reported net income of $143.5 million, up from the $115.9 million it reported during the same period last year. Dexcom updated its full fiscal year guidance to reflect expected revenue between $4 billion and $4.05, which is down from the $4.20 billion to $4.35 billion it forecast last quarter. "While Dexcom advanced several key strategic initiatives in the second quarter, our execution did not meet our high standards," Dexcom CEO Kevin Sayer said in the release. In March, the company announced its new over-the-counter CGM called Stelo had been cleared for use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Shares of Viking Therapeutics jumped more than 30% on Thursday after the biotech company a day earlier announced plans to advance its experimental weight loss injection into a late-stage trial earlier than expected. Viking is one of several small and large drugmakers hoping to compete in the space against Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly , whose weight loss and diabetes GLP-1s have skyrocketed in demand over the last two years. During the call, Lian added that Viking expects to test VK2735 as a monthly injection in a future study. Viking Therapeutics' drug promotes weight loss by targeting a GLP-1 and another hormone called GIP. That pill caused 3.3% weight loss when compared to a placebo in an early-stage trial.

CNN —More and more people are using marijuana before or during pregnancy to ease nausea, pain, stress and help with sleep. What about the potential danger to the mother if she uses cannabis before or during early pregnancy? People who used marijuana in early pregnancy also had a “19% greater risk of placental abruption,” Young-Wolff said. Using at least once a month or more was linked to a greater risk of placental abruption, the study found. “More studies are needed to understand whether and how cannabis use in pregnancy may impact risk for gestational diabetes,” Moore said.

To the Editor:Re “Why Medical Students Are Shunning Pediatrics,” by Aaron E. Carroll (Opinion guest essay, July 7):The dwindling number of physicians choosing to pursue pediatrics is a grave concern to me as a pediatric resident physician, particularly given the increasing number of children with complex medical needs and chronic conditions. Soaring rates of pediatric mental health challenges have also strained the general pediatricians who navigate providing care in busy clinic schedules while our patients wait months to see psychiatrists or developmental pediatricians. Dr. Carroll notes that low reimbursement for pediatric care is a key reason for lack of interest in the specialty, with about half of American children insured by Medicaid or CHIP. The evidence is clear that health in childhood predicts health later in life. Pediatricians have the opportunity to address issues that can lead to lifelong health challenges early, from diabetes to substance use, ultimately saving the health care system money.

People with obesity now have a choice between two powerful drugs to help them lose weight. One is semaglutide, sold by Novo Nordisk as Wegovy for obesity treatment and as Ozempic for diabetes. A recent study suggested that people lost more weight taking Mounjaro than they did taking Ozempic, and it may leave you wondering: Which should I take? Is one weight loss drug really better than the other? As Abbott's organic sales growth continues to shine, the market will realize both concerns are overblown. The FreeStyle Libre itself, which had 20% organic growth in the quarter, also still has plenty of runway for further growth. Investors should focus instead on the upward revision to management's full-year outlook for both top-line organic growth and earnings. The combination of Thursday's strong results and immediate decline in share price is setting up a positive risk vs. reward setup. Millions of pregnant women get the pitch through their OB-GYN: Put a bit of your newborn’s umbilical cord on ice, as a biological insurance policy. If your child one day faces cancer, diabetes or even autism, the precious stem cells in the cord blood could become a tailor-made cure. More than two million umbilical cord samples sit in a handful of suburban warehouses across the country. Doctors rarely use cord blood anymore, thanks to advances that have made it easier to transplant adult stem cells. And the few parents who try to withdraw cord blood samples often find that they are unusable — either because their volume is too low or they have been contaminated with microbes.
