CNN —The Israeli security cabinet on Tuesday voted to approve a ceasefire deal in Lebanon, an Israeli official told CNN, potentially bringing an end to more than a year of cross-border skirmishes with Hezbollah and months of a full-scale war that has killed thousands. Resolution 1701 was adopted to end a 34-day war between Israel and Lebanon in 2006, and had kept relative calm in the area for nearly two decades. At least 10 people were killed in the strikes on central Beirut, the Lebanese Health Ministry said. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu speaks during a televised address Tuesday evening. In his address, Netanyahu stressed that Israel will respond “forcefully” if Hezbollah violates the agreement and attempts to rearm.

Japan halted an engine test for one of its flagship rockets after a fire broke out at the launch site on Tuesday, marking the latest setback in the country’s efforts to establish a foothold in the growing market for vehicles capable of launching satellites into orbit. Japan’s space agency had been testing the engine combustion of its Epsilon S rocket when what it described as an “abnormality” occurred shortly after ignition. Footage from NHK, the public broadcaster, showed a blaze erupting at the test site in southwestern Japan. The failed test of JAXA’s Epsilon S rocket, codeveloped with Japanese heavy-industry manufacturer IHI, follows a similar issue in 2023 that led to months of reviews and delays. JAXA has previously said it planned to launch a demonstration model of the rocket by the end of March.

While leaders of the two nations continue to butt heads, US consumers have paid the price, shelling out more money on goods imported from China. Now Trump is focusing his attention on America’s largest and third-largest trading partners: Mexico and Canada. The 25% tariff Trump floated would have “huge impacts” on gas prices, amounting to an increase between 25 cents to 75 cents per gallon, he said. Said differently, your guac and avocado toast could skyrocket if 25% tariffs are levied on Mexico. Bottom line: It’s going to hurtThe new round of tariffs Trump is prepared to impose comes as the US has grown increasingly reliant on imports from Mexico and Canada.

The court heard she had been cornered in an office by police and paramedics and had refused to put down a steak knife when White deployed his Taser. Video released by the court shows Clare Nowland at the nursing home about 10 minutes before she was shocked by the Taser. Asked for his first impressions of Nowland, White agreed that she was elderly, but took issue with the suggestion she may have been frail. “You see this?” White asked her. The court heard White had the Taser pointed at Nowland, its light shining in her eyes, for one minute before he used it.

When President-elect Donald J. Trump vowed to impose new 25 percent tariffs on all goods coming into the country from Canada and Mexico, he said he’d keep them in place until drugs and people were stopped from crossing U.S. borders. In particular, Mr. Trump mentioned a caravan of migrants bound for the United States from southern Mexico. It was the latest example of Mr. Trump using such collections of migrants to bolster his claims about the border — although it’s rare they ever get that far. The groups of thousands of migrants often come together in southern Mexico near its border with Guatemala, which is more than 1,000 miles from the United States. While waiting in the southern city of Tapachula for humanitarian visas to travel through Mexico, a process that can often take months, migrants band together as they prepare to move north.

According to the UNESCO study, 62% of surveyed creators said they don’t vet the accuracy of content before sharing it with their followers. The study comes in the wake of the 2024 US presidential election, in which social media influencers played a key role as an information source for voters. During the campaign, President-elect Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris harnessed social media influencers and podcasters with millions of followers, including Joe Rogan and Alex Cooper, to appeal directly to voters. And a separate survey from Pew found that more than half of American adults “at least sometimes” get their news from social media. Online influencers generally do not rely on official sources of information, such as government-issued reports and documents, the UNESCO study found.

To get on the wrong side of transgender activists is often to endure their unsparing criticism. When J.K. Rowling said that denying any relationship between sex and biology was “deeply misogynistic and regressive,” a prominent L.G.B.T.Q. group accused her of betraying “real feminism.” A few angry critics posted videos of themselves burning her books. allies last year to discuss new limits on the participation of transgender student athletes, one activist fumed on the call that the administration would be complicit in “genocide” of transgender youth, according to two people with knowledge of the incident. Now, some activists say it is time to rethink and recalibrate their confrontational ways, and are pushing back against the more all-or-nothing voices in their coalition.

The shoplifter knew the geography of the big gleaming Target store in TriBeCa as well as he knew his dingy little $20-a-week room uptown. He popped through the sliding front door, where a security guard stood posted. That was how long it would take for the police to respond to the 911 call the security guard would be making right now. The shoplifter, David Andino, clambered down that escalator, hurtling past shoppers heading up. Andino scooped what he could into a laundry bag, seeking out the brands he knew he could easily sell.
