Google DeepMind is working on new tools that could function as a personal life coach, per the NYT. DeepMind, Google's AI arm, is working on ambitious new tools that could function as a personal life coach, The New York Times reported. That includes the ability to give users life advice, ideas, planning instructions, and tutoring tips. Such AI would naturally involve users exploring tense or complicated situations in their personal lives, and implementing the advice of a chatbot. Over 100 experts with doctorates have been contracted in by ScaleAI to help test the capabilities of the life coach tool, the NYT reported.

One of Google's AI units is using generative AI to develop at least 21 different tools for life advice, planning and tutoring, The New York Times reported Wednesday. Google's DeepMind has become the "nimble, fast-paced" standard-bearer for the company's AI efforts, as CNBC previously reported, and is behind the development of the tools, the Times reported. Google has reportedly contracted with Scale AI, the $7.3 billion startup focused on training and validating AI software, to test the tools. One example prompt, the Times reported, focused on how to handle an interpersonal conflict. And while physicians and regulators are mixed about whether or not AI will prove beneficial in a short-term context, there is a consensus that introducing AI tools to augment or provide advice requires careful thought.

Among other things, the workers are testing the assistant’s ability to answer intimate questions about challenges in people’s lives. safety experts had said in December that users could experience “diminished health and well-being” and a “loss of agency” if they took life advice from A.I. They had added that some users who grew too dependent on the technology could think it was sentient. And in March, when Google launched Bard, it said the chatbot was barred from giving medical, financial or legal advice. Bard shares mental health resources with users who say they are experiencing mental distress.

There is an influx of cash and interest into artificial intelligence startups right now. Insider spoke to ex-Google DeepMind staffers who have founded AI startups in stealth. He isn't the only DeepMind alum working on practical applications of artificial intelligence. Last month, Mistral, an AI startup founded by DeepMind alum, secured $113 million in seed funding from Lightspeed just four weeks after it launched. He has since been working on his second AI startup in stealth mode since June 2023, adding that working under the radar was inspired by DeepMind's "own model of working in stealth."

Tech firms once had the luxury of pursuing expensive AI research. It's a sign that companies hope AI will play a greater role in boosting revenue. The Financial Times reported that the company axed a team involved in protein folding research as part of its massive restructuring program, which Mark Zuckerberg has called the "Year of Efficiency." The company's vice-president of AI, Joelle Pineau, also said Meta "remains committed" to its Fundamental AI Research (FAIR) Team, which conducts "exploratory research based on open science." The race to make money from AI then is heating up.

The AI tools being applied to healthcare can generally be divided into two main categories. The first encompass large language models that are applied to administrative functions like processing medical claims or creating and analyzing medical records. In fact, up to 30 percent of radiology practices have already adopted AI tools. Right now, there are only a few clinical language models, and even the largest ones possess a relatively small number of parameters. As the quality and scope of clinical data available for training these large language models continue to grow, so will their capabilities.

The investment into Mistral AI is just one of many this year by venture capitalists jostling for a seat aboard the AI rocketship. In the first six months of 2023, they plowed $15.2 billion into generative AI companies globally, according to Pitchbook data. The bulk of this sum comes from Microsoft (MSFT)’s $10 billion investment, announced in January, in OpenAI, the developer of popular generative AI chatbot ChatGPT. But even excluding Microsoft’s bumper deal, the value of VC investments in generative AI was up by almost 58% compared with the same period in 2022. “Buying a ‘dot-ai’ domain, and claiming to be an AI company… doesn’t really make you an AI company,” Jacobs told CNN.

"High level, we want this to become something like your personal AI friend," said developer Div Garg, whose company MultiOn is beta-testing an AI agent. The race towards increasingly autonomous AI agents has been supercharged by the March release of GPT-4 by developer OpenAI, a powerful upgrade of the model behind ChatGPT - the chatbot that became a sensation when released last November. GPT-4 facilitates the type of strategic and adaptable thinking required to navigate the unpredictable real world, said Vivian Cheng, an investor at venture capital firm CRV who has a focus on AI agents. OpenAI itself is very interested in AI agent technology, according to four people briefed on its plans. There are at least 100 serious projects working to commercialize agents, said Matt Schlicht, who writes a newsletter on AI.

Elon Musk announced his new company xAI which he says has the goal to understand the true nature of the universe. Tesla CEO Elon Musk said on Friday that he plans for his newest venture, the artificial intelligence startup xAI, to collaborate with the automaker both on the "silicon front" and on the "AI software front." Musk also said, during Friday's live audio session on Twitter Spaces, that xAI will use Twitter data for training the "maximally curious" artificial intelligence systems and products he hopes to build there. Musk did not specify whether and how much Twitter will charge xAI or his other companies for its data. A Tesla fan and promoter, Omar Qazi (known as Whole Mars Catalog on Twitter) asked Musk a few questions about how he plans for xAI to work with Tesla during the Spaces event.

In a Twitter Spaces event Wednesday evening, Musk explained his plan for building a safer AI. Rather than explicitly programming morality into its AI, xAI will seek to create a "maximally curious" AI, he said. Musk in March registered a firm named X.AI Corp, incorporated in Nevada, according to a state filing. The firm lists Musk as the sole director and Jared Birchall, the managing director of Musk's family office, as a secretary. Dan Hendrycks, who will advise the xAI team, is currently director of the Center for AI Safety and his work revolves around the risks of AI.

Top AI researchers have been leaving for startups where their work can have more impact. That frustration over Google's slow movement has been corroborated by other former Google researchers who spoke to Insider. Niki Parmar left Google Brain after five years to serve as a cofounder and CTO of Adept, though in November, she left to found a stealth startup. Lukasz Kaiser left Google Brain after working there for more than seven years to join OpenAI in 2021. Sharan Narang, another contributor to the T5 paper, left Google Brain in 2022 after four years there.

A brain drain among tech companies brain is underway right now, driven by the popularity of AI. Tech firms are pretty obsessed with AI right now. Even before ChatGPT's launch, Google workers seemed fed up and decided to jump ship to OpenAI to help launch ChatGPT. Meanwhile, Musk's somewhat modest ambition for his new AI company to "understand the true nature of the universe" could prove alluring to tech bros who think that's what AI should be used to accomplish. Tech firms will want to ensure their AI projects make them the top pick.

Artificial intelligence could become the next battleground for Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg. Artificial intelligence could become the next battleground in the ongoing feud between Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Meta Platforms boss Mark Zuckerberg. The two billionaires – who've been trading barbs online since Musk summoned Zuckerberg to a cage fight last month – are working to challenge the dominance of ChatGPT owner OpenAI. Zuckerberg responded by telling Musk to "send [him his] location", setting the stage for a physical confrontation. Insider tech reporter (and resident combat sports expert) Hasan Chowdhury believes that Zuckerberg would have the edge in that one.

In April, Google made a dramatic move to face down the threat from Microsoft and OpenAI: it combined its AI research team, Brain, with DeepMind. By fusing it with its central AI unit, Google sent an unambiguous message that it was pulling out all the stops to supercharge its work in AI. Insider obtained internal org charts that reveal the new power structure of Google DeepMind. Hassabis oversees around 2,450 full-time employees, the majority of which are Google DeepMind employees. Dean, who previously oversaw all of Google's AI unit, has moved from his management position into the new role of Chief Scientist, reporting directly to CEO Sundar Pichai.

CNN —Google was hit with a wide-ranging lawsuit on Tuesday alleging the tech giant scraped data from millions of users without their consent and violated copyright laws in order to train and develop its artificial intelligence products. The complaint also claims Google has taken “virtually the entirety of our digital footprint,” including “creative and copywritten works” to build its AI products. The complaint points to a recent update to Google’s privacy policy that explicitly states the company may use publicly accessible information to train its AI models and tools such as Bard. It is also seeking unspecified damages and payments as financial compensation to people whose data was allegedly misappropriated by Google. Giordano contrasted the benefits and alleged harms of how Google typically indexes online data to support its core search engine with the new allegations of it scraping data to train AI tools.
