CNN —A 21-year-old soldier stationed in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, has been charged with murder in the death of a sergeant whose body was found in a dumpster on the military base after she disappeared. Rancy is in pretrial confinement awaiting a preliminary hearing, a Thursday news release from Fort Leonard Wood said. Fort Leonard Wood is about 140 miles southwest of St. Louis. Beck said at a news conference last week that the Fort Leonard Wood community is “devastated” by the tragic loss. A security guard has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder charge in the death of a 32-year-old man he is accused of shooting at a hookah lounge early Sunday, police in Texas said. An overdue hunter in Alaska was found dead Wednesday after an apparent attack by at least one brown bear, state police said. A search was launched, and his remains were found at around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, state troopers said in a daily report of incidents. Investigators know a brown bear was involved because that's the only type of bear in the area, DeSpain said. Alaska has black bears, brown bears — which include grizzlies — and polar bears. There are around 100,000 black bears and around 30,000 brown bears in Alaska, the state Department of Fish and Game says on its website.

TLAXCALA, Mexico — An explosion at a Simec-owned steel plant in Mexico’s central Tlaxcala state in the early hours of Wednesday killed at least 12 people, state authorities said. “At the plant of the steel complex located in the city of Apizaco, Tlaxcala, a liquid steel spill occurred with the loss of human lives, temporarily paralyzing operations,” the firm said in a statement. The state civil protection office said in a social media post that the blast was likely caused after smelting apparatus collapsed. Those killed were workers at the plant, the state prosecutor’s office told Reuters. However, molten steel, when it comes into contact with water, causes an explosion.

A man wanted in connection to the slaying of a New York City woman at a chic Hamptons resort was found dead in Pennsylvania, police said Wednesday. Gannon "was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at his home" in Honesdale, Pennsylvania, about 200 miles from the murder scene, according to a Suffolk County Police Department statement. "We are not confirming the relationship, but we can say it was domestic in nature," a Suffolk County police spokesperson said.
